That's not specific. "Get involved and do it" lmao

Is he hands on recruiting these portal guys or leaving it to the front office? Is he calling boosters and getting the money? Did he work with Pete and the proper parties the last few months to prepare? Everything you are putting at the feet of NDs FO, is Freeman doing any of it? Everything you are crediting Cignetti for, is Freeman doing any of it?

If you’re asking me to be more specific, it’s a reflection of your post.

He is extremely close with Tae. I should have some inside scoop hopefully tomorrow for us
The original plan was for him to join Schott at IU because they’re super close. He didn’t hear from IU off the bat and they seem to be out.

UPDATE:

Right now it appears to be Ole Miss, Auburn, Louisville and ND. Also, he is considering potentially going back to OSU.

It’s been chaotic and I’m not sure he is even leaning a certain direction right now.

lol why do people care about a kicker if we don’t get 3-4 DL. Kicker doesn’t matter if we have no middle.
I would say that only focus in my opinion are 2 DTs and 1 K...all in...

Confused by this paragraph. The first sentence seems to indicate that we're coming in under market. The rest of it seems like an organizational issue that largely stems from the University's admissions and not the football staff? Am I reading that correctly?
If you don't have a sole point person with absolute authority to get whoever they want in to school up to $X of money then right now you are losing in the portal. All schools that are "winning" the portal are ones that:
1. Did way more legwork pre-portal to put themselves in position to land players
2. Have a guy who can put an offer sheet in front of someone with whatever $$ he wants up to the funds available without having to check with a bunch of people. you can't negotiate by committee with how fast stuff moves.

You can't unring the bell with the pre-portal stuff, Martin did a bad job and there will be pieces written about it. And now that you're in scramble mode there is wayyyyyyy too much sand in the gears relative to other schools.

If ND thinks that Xavier Gilliam or Francis Brewu are multi-year starters and impact players the likes of some of the players that they already paid to retain, then at some point they're to have to be willing to bite the bullet pay what the market demands that they do... Unless one of three things.

1). They are extremely confident that they'll get a similar player for cheaper later in the cycle.

2). They are extremely confident that they have players developing internally that will have a similar impact for cheaper.

3). They're ok fielding an inferior team than they could have otherwise fielded had they spent the necessary cash to make it better.

That's why I don't get too worked up about these things. We don't control the finances. We don't coach the kids. We're not in charge of roster construction. So there's no point getting spun up about something I can't control. Surely I'll opine about what I think might be happening and I'll analyze the outcome, but I'm not going to get attached to it emotionally.
To add on to this, we don’t have enough information to really have strong views on whether or not things are being managed well.

What’s our overall NIL budget? What’s going to guys on our squad? What are these players asking? How does the staff feel about guys on our roster?

We only have incomplete information about all of these questions, but they’re crucial to having informed opinions as to what’s going on right now. Sure, it’s easy to spend other people’s money and say we should spend what it takes to land the top portal guys, but that might or might not be a productive use of resources.

Last year we had essentially every transfer picked out prior to the portal opening. That was bc of Chad? And Martin just whiffed there?

Got it. Well if that's all true this feels like a fireable situation with Martin honestly.

In a year where we missed the CFP in the manner we did, it should have been a slam dunk for MF and Pete to pitch our big money alumni and hit the ground running in the portal. Lesson learned. Hopefully this cycle can be salvaged and we don't repeat the same mistake twice.

He did a good job with the recruiting class, but I really don't think you can leave him in charge of the portal. Martin might be better off just focusing on HS prospects.

ehhh, feels more like an ND culture problem.

Like how they've always done things "their way" or "the right way." Same shit that caused them to be behind in nutrition and strength management. They just, institutionally, don't get it, yet.

It's just hard for a place like ND to purposefully act like a blood-thirsty pirate.

But, mother fuck, they need to.

If you thought that, you haven't paid attention to anything Freeman has said since becoming coach.

It’s usually “challenge everything”, “TGS”, and Pete B said something along the lines of “Marcus will remember this” after the CFP fiasco.

Now it all seems like a bunch of smoke being blown up our ass.

This might be one of the more depressing offseason posts I’ve read on this site.
