It "fits the modern game" in that it gives USC a P4 opponent who poses very little threat of beating them and doesn't require traveling across time zones to play. It also certifies that they are pussies.

But they DO need to replace us with a P4 and they're not going to schedule a good one, and probably not one located east of the Rockies. Stanford's one of their oldest rivals, and not as dangerous as, say, Arizona State. It makes a lot of sense for them. It'd be a bit of a shit move by Stanford though. Stanford basically owes their P4 status to Jack Swarbrick bringing them in to the ACC.
