I love this fire. I love this passion. I think all of us here love it. Now coach Free needs to get a complete season next year and finally put it together.

Watching a great speech like this and I feel like I should be ready to run through a wall. Instead I just feel even more disgusted about the bullshit that went down last week

Just watch Hard Knocks and you can see how NFL coaches talk to players. It isn't anything like what you will see in this video.

One thing about the list of names people are rattling off: they won National Championships before going to the NFL. Jimmy Johnson, Pete Carroll, Jim Harbaugh. Regardless of circumstances, they won.

Coach Free doesn't have one yet. Times have changed and we know how great he is, how highly thought of he is, but he hasn't won a championship yet. I think that NFL GMs probably don't care about that, but my guess is that Coach Free does. I'm under the assumption he wants to win at Notre Dame first. I think he definitely can.

It would be really swell to announce a mammoth extension and give an “I ain’t leaving” speech on Christmas Day.

I think Freeman is too competitive to walk away feeling like he didn't finish the job. I'm not trying to be naïve or anything, but MF is competitive to a fault and I think he wants to win it all before he feels satisfied leaving. And, he's young enough that he could coach at ND for 15 years and still go to the NFL and coach for 20 if he wanted.

The Sugar/Orange Bowl wins were huge! But from a competitive guys standpoint (hopefully his), he hasn't really accomplished anything yet at ND that he's capable of.

I feel the same way, but who the hell knows. Have to leave room open for anything to be able to happen at this point

👉***If *** 👈 this is the same guy who benched Christian Gray due effort and then told the media it was due to injury, he's a colossal fraud.

Messages of accountability get real hollow, real quick when you display none yourself.

Who the fuck cares what he told the media. The team knows and that’s it.

When I'm evaluating someone's ability to lead, me. He has a specific leadership style that relies, in part, on his character and on trust.

Try and see the forest, here

When you are preaching individual and group accountability every single day, but are selective with your own accountability to yourself and the team? That will eventually matter and will create questions about your sincerity.

It's in the Gray thread

Sampson had a whole article about Freeman today, including if he'd leave for the NFL. Most of it was a nothing burger (gotta get clicks somehow now that we're not in the playoffs) - but the one nugget he snuck in is both sides expect a new deal signed by end of December.

He would have done more damage to the player by telling the media he was benched. He is protecting his player and allowing him a chance regain his composure. Who gives a shit what he says to the media.

Is that what happened or are you assuming?

We have seen multiple players sit for mental health or unspecified reasons without "injury" being the given reason. It would be widely out of the character/integrity shown for Freeman to do it with Gray.

If you are yelling at a bunch of intelligent young men to be accountable for their actions/decisions, embodying said principal(s) is important because integrity and credibility matter. He sets the tone, the culture, all that.

My entire point is that this man does not portrait himself as someone who would out and out lie when it wasn't "required". It's a compliment and imo a large reason the guy can influence in the way that he does

I'm a little surprised that an extension hasn't been announced yet. It leads me to think MF knows he holds all the chips and is using his leverage against ND (No shit...I know). But to play devils advocate, rolling contracts and yearly reviews seem dangerous. Ya, I get he is the hottest coach out there and Michigan or Penn St would take him in a minute and make him the highest paid coach in the game.

But when do you step back and say "hold on a minute" as everyone is willing to pay MF for what he is capable of doing...Not what he has done. I feel that ND taking a shot on a coach with no HC experience and putting him in position to be courted by every team pro or college should earn them some grace...no? As much as MF deserves credit, so does ND.

I guess the short question is what's the hold up?? We had a lights out team this year (way better than last year) that missed the playoffs, that gets some people fired.

I have heard the pods say there is a hiring freeze at ND right now. Maybe this could be part of it

if it was immediately announced that a player was stepping away from ND for mental health, then the player made that announcement (think Ziegler).

Onye left the team and the school announced it was only for first one game at the time, and it was a personal matter. They kept saying that for a while.

I'm sure Gray was a little dinged up, it was a great chance to re set him and get him ready for what should have been a playoff run.

For a coach to come out and publicly bench a player and state it's due to effort, that can do even more damage. Showing confidence in the player to the media, IMO, was probably part of the "rebuild/refresh".

I don't have any concrete evidence/info in this specific case, i want to make sure that's clear. With that said, it's a very common situation in any sport for a player to lose confidence and it creates negative ripple effects in their play. The game film vs USC was very clear to me, and i'm sure the coaches as well, hell it was clear to freeman during the game. Nd was in a unique situation where they were not going to play a good passing team for a few weeks and could sit him.

I would fully expect ND to have a DB ready right behind Gray to start the season in 26, unlike this year.
