We exist, just been forced to vote blue for a while or sit on the sidelines. The professions are full of just right of center nominal republicans.
Idk how true this is. If you are right of center, the only party to vote for is the GOP.

I can see the whole "I'll sit this one out" thing. I've done that for state and local races many times. But if you vote for the current Democrat party but claim to be a republican, you are a democrat.

It's no different than my BIL's family calling themselves democrats even though they've voted GOP for 30-40 years.

The reverse is largely but not entirely true. DJT GOP is not particularly conservative rhetoric. Governance has been extremely more conservative than what the dems have offered since...JFK? Maybe Clinton after he got wiped out on '94?

Which people refuse to believe. If you get past his rhetoric, his policies are more in line with the “old” Democratic Party than the Bush, Boehner, Ryan, etc Republican Party. But no matter what. Orange man bad!

This is probably an endangered animal in American politics. Ticket splitting used to be very normal (data shows it) relative to now.

The Republican Party is alive and well as the Democratic Party is. Problem is purity tests for every position from town dog catcher on up.

I vote for our local judge and he's basically a Bernie bro. He's a very competent judge though and good at that job... plus it's a nonpartisan election. Politics are largely unrelated to his job of handling state level crime and civil issues. If the people in town knew his opinions on politics he'd lose to me by 20-30 points, a baby lawyer without a clue how to do the job. And that's a shame.
My county was always pretty split. Hell for 29 some years our US Rep was a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, anyone remember them? They were the moderate/conservative Dems in Congress. Unfortunately, he was primaried because he wasn’t left enough. Now our county is pretty much entirely republican and even the old school, JFK Catholic Dems in our area that used to have a lot of power are scrambling because a D next to your name is like the plague.

This sure as hell isn’t your 80,90s Democratic Party either….. Both sides are full of irrational lunatics.
I will say, at least in my part of the hoosier states, I find most of the democrats to be comfortably with in my acceptable overton window. Also when I feel the need to bloviate on legislation in the state house it’s a democrat senator from nwi who always gets me on the list.

We had dem reps/senators for generations until I turned 18 in 2010. Then they all retired or got demolished.

So same deal here. A reliably red presidential state with a healthy dem party is now reliably red and dems are an endangered species. It goes both ways I'm sure but its wild, our house is now 82-11 GOP and our Senate is 42-5.

I'm as red as it gets but that's not healthy. I'm sure some of those GOP guys/gals are D's running as R's but that's just not good.

Yeah I come from a very large very moderate family. My grandparents were democrats, had 10 children (and over 100 descendants as of this year) and were a low middle class. Sometime in the late 90s early 2000s the whole family started voting Republican because of how left to Democrats went. My extended family still considers themselves moderates but no longer identifies with the far left democrats.

yeah the reason for this meeting was actually to try and mend a 1500 dispute between the two churches and make them more aligned. Continues on from work JP2 did back in the day
Cant mend this now. They have insulted the Holy Father.

Lots of talk in this thread about whether liberal Republicans exist. Yes, we do, and our numbers are growing every year. (While I've never voted Republican, I anticipate voting that way going forward.)

You could argue the stationary middle person in this cartoon is now a "conservative" without ever having changed a thing. Semantics can be silly.

It's so fun having an American Pope that is a sports fan.

We need Leo to publicly opine that a 10-2 Notre Dame should always make the playoff.

I don't need an encyclical on it - I'd settle for a moto propio or papal bull.
An encyclical would be a nice touch

Yes, conservatives today are exactly the same as Reagan conservatives LOL

Cool story, bro. Take it to the Covid thread.

Are basic communication, logic, and maturity regular stumbling blocks for you?

The mods seem to have decided what's acceptable conversation here, and I respect that decision, but if I want to discuss Covid that sounds like a fine place to do it, thanks.

Do we know what Leo’s pizza preference is?
Not exactly sure, but I remember hearing that a month or so ago some folks from Chicago gave him one from somewhere there during the Wednesday Audience and that he happily ate the whole thing (much to the Swiss Guards chagrin).
