They're 21st in America in Total Offense with 30 offensive touchdowns in six games while averaging 7.18 yards per play.

The internet is truly a place where people just come to bitch about things. It's a giant junkyard of grievance. It explains so, so much about where we're at from a societal standpoint.

I think with the talent we stack at O-line and RB, the fans expect us to run the ball like Alabama under Saban. Especially Circa 2012. Were their lines really more talented than ours year in and out?

Rudolph isn't doing his job well enough. We have a room loaded with talent. They are blocking for 2 x top 5 RBs (Kiper has Love #1 and Price #3 on RB big board) and a top 10 (and improving) QB. And they still manage to just be mediocre. This is on the coach.

I think every one will admit that our run blocking has not been as good as we thought it would be. The pass protection has been very good.

If I asked if the O-line was our best group on the team I think most would say no. Which is a rarity.

They still have time to get better. But this also why you don’t push experienced players out the door.

He had problems with the line last year and he kept working with them and week in and week out they got better. So he has at least earned the right to try to make this better.

Yes. Their 2012 line had 2 first rounders, a second rounder, a fourth rounder who won the Outland the year before AND the Rimington that year, and an undrafted guy who was second team all SEC the following year. 4 of the five starters were all-americans, two of whom were Unanimous All Americans. That was one of the best OLines ever. They had three backups get drafted as well.

The problem is also that he (presumably) let Coogan and Spindler walk. If they are playing for ND, the odds we win one or both of the first two games go up, I think. Doesn't mean it wasn't the right decision at the time, but it hasn't worked out brilliantly, either.

Do you really believe Joe Rudolph and the rest of the staff simply let Coogan and Spindler walk? Everything I’ve read or heard indicates it was more of a situation where they were told they would have to compete for their respective starting positions and that wasn’t what the two players wanted to hear so they explored free agency to see if they could get a better deal elsewhere. Keep in mind that at the time it was expected Craig and Jagusah would also be competing for starting positions. I agree with you that both of them (especially Coogan) would be extremely valuable now but I don’t believe that Joe Rudolph just let them walk.

This has been discussed ad nauseam by the ND beat writers. And the dead horse will be revived & beaten again now w/ Craig out w/ back-to-back season ending injuries. They stated that ND wanted those OL back but they weren’t going to stay at ND for less money than they could get elsewhere. I’d love to have at least kept Coogan but he had his ND degree & he wasn’t promised a starting role going into this season. He may get the last laugh if IU keeps rolling.

They tried very hard to retain Spindler FWIW but there was no path to promise a full time starting gig with Jagusah healthy at the time.

Did they get pushed out the door? Or was it a case of them seeing what was up and coming and figured the best way to assured snaps is to move to another team? I’m guessing the latter. Can’t imagine Coach Free told Rocco and Coogs to leave.

This is just part of the sport now for power programs.
Guys - especially older/experienced guys - who aren’t likely to start go off somewhere that they will. That’s fine until you have injuries, but then you don’t have depth. This is why you need to keep the recruiting pipeline flowing.

I was going off items I have read both on this site and ISD from posters that are constantly correct. Along with listening to the podcast where they won’t come out and say it but they give hints.

Interesting if true. I wouldn’t have thought that.

LR said they weren't moving his defense like Illinois did.
Riley is a dumbass. Illinois has 170 yards rushing on 35 carries, 4.9 YPC. We averaged 7.0 and it wasn't because Love and Price were breaking tons of tackles.

Crazy part is, it would have been a whole lot worse for LR’s crew if Denbrock had kept feeding the two headed monster of Love/Price.

Really disappointing that the Carson Beck we saw in our game was not the same one that has been playing the last couple of weeks. We would have rolled those guys.
Said it before, and I'll say it again.
I wanted Miami later in the season because I knew
1) ND (Carr in particular) would improve
2) Beck's new school confidence facade would fade and he'd become a shell again

He tried a few times, unfortunately he was bailed out with a mix of good luck and a catch of the year in game 1.

You can start earning your pay check at anytime. Great pass blocking unit terrible run blocking unit. Fix it!
ND is down 3 starting OL and has 1 functional tight end. Their performance in the short run game has been embarrassing. I'd love to see them do what an opponent in high school did versus everyone.

This school had an all state RB who eventually broke every rushing record in the county. They got tired of everyone putting 9 in the box all night, so they went 4 wide (a crazy concept in 1999), spread the defense, and still ran their workhorse.
