Two kids I had the biggest beef with Charles Powers’ rankings of we’re CJ Carr & Drayk Bowen.
Not just because of how bad they were, but how he came on & tried to justify them.
With Bowen he said he wasn’t athletic enough. A kid who played Shortstop & Centerfieid good enough to be a D1 baseball player, isn’t athletic?
With Carr he said he didn’t have arm strength. At the Elite 11, all the other scouts agreed Carr had as much zip as anyone and was a top 3 QB there. Powers saw the exact same throws & dropped Carr out of the top 15 QBs in his rankings.

So I was curious now, how did it shake out?
Bowen was Powers’ 21st LB. (Outside top 200).
Carr was Powers’ 16th QB. (Outside top 200).

Go look at the players on Powers’ rankings above those two at their positions.
A bunch of the QBs aren’t even playing for lesser programs, & others have left to go play for smaller programs. Meanwhile, Carr is about to start for a top 5 team who was the national runner ups.
I didn’t recognize many of the LBs or ND played against, & beat, teams with some of the LBs who didn’t even play. And Bowen was a stud on the national runnerups & about to be a true junior captain on a top 5 team.

People have misses all the time, but the reasoning Powers gave for these two were just crazy, & everyone tried telling him so.
CJ Carr was really good in the BG game. He made some throws we haven't seen at ND in a couple years, but what impressed me most was his ball placement on screens, swings, and short passes in the flats. Everything was waist to chin on the body/slightly out in front to allow the receivers to maximize yards after the catch. He also looked poised and in command, so hopefully the stage isn't too big for him if he makes his first start at Miami.

I remember this. At the time, you could tell it was personal for some reason. I remember thinking he will get proven wrong eventually, and here we are.

I think this was an example of someone having too big of an ego and unable to admit he was wrong. That or, at the time, it seemed like it was almost personal because the evaluation was so glaringly bad. That single experience caused me to not trust Powers as an evaluator one iota.

Are the guys at 18 Stripes taking a little break in the summer, or is it something more? They haven't posted anything in 3 weeks.

They're still posting regularly. Started doing commitment posts again too. Maybe you need to refresh your browser, that's an issue with wordpress sometimes.

I’m sure most of you are familiar with Brian Smith?
He is on shows everywhere, including having his own.
He is an Indiana grad, but Notre Dame fan.

He travels probably more than anyone & sees more games & talks to more recruits in person than anybody.

Anyways, he really likes Grubbs. Says he is the most accurate QB he has scene the past year. He was really mad the Elite 11 didn’t invite him.

But what’s Driskell’s opinion of Grubbs?

Not sure if this is serious. But i get the vibe that Driskell is ehh on him but won't say it because he doesn't want to risk pissing people off or losing a future source. I kind of understand that too. He definitely liked the other qb more who reclassed and is at Texas A&M

Grubbs is a ~58% passer over the past two years. I refuse to believe that’s the most accurate qb out there no matter what Brian Smith has “scene.”

Golic jr is fine by me. Anyone who praises Notre Dame and gets our best characteristics said into the negative wind has a fan in me (based on my unflinching bias in favor of my school. ... and there are plenty of morons and ignoramuses out there who need to be "talked down to", if not all the way to "shut up and sit down.") Notre Dame is still severely unliked (lots of time openly hostile) all over sports. Thank God that Marcus Freeman is so likable in all his public dimensions. He has mitigated that hatred, but ND still gets crapped on every chance the hoard gets, and ignored most of the rest of the time. Any ND homer is a good homer for me. Living through self-inflicted wounds like Terry Brennan, Joe Kuharich, Jerry Faust, Tyrone Willingham, and Charlie Weis gives me the "Right :)" to be awash with happy thoughts.

Smetana and GolicJ are fine but compare them to the other teams and it's a significant difference.

Significant difference? Perhaps. Ms. Smetana brings something none of them do, so, correct!. Also, maybe success here depends upon work ethic/effort not ancient rust and a name. I'll wait to judge.
