Anyone have kids going through the recruiting process for football?

don't hate
I had an NDSU hat on in the airport once and some dude sat down next to me and started talking about agriculture research and land grants and all this stuff. I ask where he went to school and he says "the NY land grant, Cornell!"

he was really cool dude, he even talked about being from Kulpmont....right now, my son is leaning that way in terms of the culture/smaller school atmosphere/coaches he liked the most..
Dante Carr, from Minersville, loved his visit there this past year too. He's always been a big PSU fan (yuck), but they've been slow playing him. Seems now, PSU are getting more serious about him so he is looking that way again.

But yeah, that's awesome man!

Man your boy has some great options. What an awesome opportunity. If he didn’t like the area by Temple I can’t imagine Columbia is a better option lol. I’ve seen JMUand UVA. Both beautiful places. I wish you and your family the best, very exciting stuff.

I imagine Columbia is much safer than around Temple. Literally step off the campus and there are homeless, people in drugged out stupors, and a metric FUCK TON of crime in North Philly.

yeah i have steered him away from even visiting there....he doesn't want to live in a big city and i am fully on board with this because that would be the last place despite being IVY, not getting involved w/ that mess there

Speaking as someone who is a Philly native and went to school in NYC (Fordham), the area around Columbia is light years better than around Temple these days. Even Fordham’s campus in the heart of the Bronx feels dramatically safer than North Philly.

columbia is right in manhattan in the concrete jungle with a lot of political protests and when he was as temple, they told him basically it isn't safe off campus....but he didn't like the style of coaching...he said they were just demeaning and yelling....when at JMU especially but others too, they yelled but they also then showed the player again and again what they were doing wrong......

Dante is a fantastic athlete and a great kid too. Super nice after games and whatnot.

His issue, and I hate to say this because I am a big supporter of kids going to their public schools, is that he stayed in Minersville. I don't think he ever got the proper development there. The coaches are all great guys, my cousin is on the staff. However, when you are throwing the ball to kids at the A and AA level of skill in a small coal town... And he can just outathlete kids here so I don't think he has ever perfected a great drop back and read presence.

yeah the urban campuses are a different experience. I have NYU down by my work and it’s just not the same as a college town.

I went to a conference in high school at Columbia, and I felt like I was at a prison yard when I was walking around the "campus". Vandy is the best urban college campus I've ever seen though, so I know it can be done right. I just don't think Columbia is my style.

Really? I'm a little jaded comparing it to LSU's campus, but it was alright ... Peabody College / Wyatt Lawn is nice. The rest of the campus, I thought, was okay. The residential colleges / tower on West End look really nice. Belmont's campus, although not my personal style, is laid out nicely...

Rice has been my personal favorite urban campus.

Just wrapped up our visit to BC today... what a beautiful campus, it is very comparable to ND in terms of how it looked with the architecture and obvious religious tones.... coming back for return visit in June to camp for offer and then they said about ov'ing over summer... left it out I'm an ND fan, they said oh we play the holy war this year...I was hoping to ov for that game.... ran into Peter thamel at practice, ran into bill obrien in parking lot... just surreal

Also something of note regarding the possible 105 scholarships.... linebacker coach told us regardless what they decide, bc would still only do 85 as the cost of tuition is nearly 100,000 a year
My son is going through the process right now. Davidson offered him last week and he’s had Dartmouth, Austin Peay, and a few others stop by the school. Coach from Austin Peay called me today. He gets hit up a bunch on X. He’s probably going to end up at a FCS level school.

We did the Rivals combine in Atlanta last weekend and are going to a bunch of camps this summer. We really started late as he didn’t do any camps last year, which is a mistake if you want to play college. Anyway, what type of cost do the Ivies end up being? I know they don’t do athletic scholarships but give aid. They give you an idea of that when they offer? Just curious.

My cousin ran track at Columbia. Ivies do academic/need-based aid, or at least they did when she was in school 10 years ago. I believe she paid about $10k/year.

I can’t give you any definitives, but I believe the aid package they offer covers the vast majority of the cost of attending. I’m sorry I don’t have any more info. I do know that an Ivy League degree is like winning the lottery. Dartmouth, I believe, rejects 97% of applicants.

Yeah, I’d like to see him go somewhere that he wouldn’t have a chance to go without football. I like what I’ve seen about Davidson. Smaller school, good academics. Think it would be a good fit. Excited to go check it out.

You should ask Steph Curry about Davidson.

Harvard and a few other ivy's are NOW offering zero tuition if the parents make a combined less than 200k....however when the coaches are talking with my kid, i get very little from him about them as he isn't interested in them so now that a few schools in the acc, sunbelt etc are recruiting him and talking NIL payments, he wants only to play major div 1 football so i never got into the details w/ the ivy....but they keep showing up to his school, calling him etc....best of luck to your kid , it's awesome experience

Gotcha. We're going to make a trip up to the NE and hit Columbia and Princeton (as of now), though Dartmouth seems the most interested. He has no interest at this time in going that far away but we plan on exposing him to as many options as possible. I saw Navy was following him and he said they've been in contact. One of their selling points was "playing Notre Dame every year". Kinda funny.

We'll see how it all works out. Part of me isn't that excited about college football anyway. My daughter just graduated after playing college soccer and she ended up with surgery on one shoulder and will eventually need it on the other. No telling what college football will do to the body.

Have him ask Navy for their advance scouting report on ND

Well I have 1 son being recruited for the world's definition of football lol...he is going to spend his Jr year in Rome, Italy playing Soccer for Rome City Academy, part of Serie A Elite ID program. He will be training and competing there, looking to get exposure by playing Serie A, B and C clubs. Pretty excited about it...his twin went to Poland last year to get exposure with a few Polish clubs. Might be going for a tryout this summer as well...

My n=1: BIL went to Dartmouth for a different sport. I think it was a great decision and he received an excellent education for very little money. He works in a high income, high intensity job and his salary/bonus structure would make most people's eyes water. He's a hard worker but his Dartmouth network has been instrumental to his career path.

Your son must be comfortable wherever he goes but the idea of skipping an Ivy to go to an Austin Peay-type school makes makes my stomach roll a little bit (as a father). When you account for all possible outcomes in life, I believe the high academic schools with strong networks weight your life toward success more than almost anything else (besides genetics, industriousness and IQ).

This is the way. Can be a great networking advantage at about any school though. Lots of great educations to be had out there.

I absolutely agree. Based on what his options end up being, this could be a challenging time for me as a dad. It's easy when they're young and I could fall back on "you're not old enough to make that decision". He'll be 18 when he goes off to school and I want him to go where he feels most comfortable. I'm just not sure how persuasive I'll be when it's ultimately decision time. I'm just excited for another year of high school football to be here.
