I never really got Prince. I understand that he was a really great guitar player. But the songs, meh for me. Am i wrong?
Some called him a musical genius. Like many with God given talent…musicians or athletes he was a natural that taught himself how to play the guitar, piano, bass etc. he wrote his first song at age 7. Living in MN now I actually worked with a guy that was a back up singer/dancer for Prince. He’s great friends with Carmen Electra and has some crazy stories about her and Rodman. lol. He, my buddy, was on call to 24-7 and would get calls to come to Prince’s place, Paisley Park, at all hours of the night/morning to rehearse. Wild Times!!

He was a talented multi-instrumentalust and a good guitar player, but not a great one... mostly flash and showboating and tricks, not anything of real brilliance. The whole "As good as Jimi" thing makes most guitarists roll their eyes and laugh. As for the songs, I'm with you. Talented for sure, catchy and prolific, but not brilliant or particularly original.

Yeah, as noted, I passed.

Women loved him though. It was her and her childhood friend’s first concert.

I graduated HS in ‘99. That song makes my ears bleed to this day.

As a musician he was amazing. Not sure if you have seen him play while my guitar gently weeps but bro was just an all around great writer, multi instrument player and clearly a top tier performer. His early shit with the revolution is still great IMO. He had some really good songs later to but not at the level of the Revolution period. I personally think he is top 10 pop artist ever but with the caveat that he was an actual do it all performer and musician to boot and not just a vocal performer regurgitating pop garbage written by a producer.

Been listening to Houndmouth a lot lately. Always knew of Sedona, but they're coming close to me soon and I got tickets. They're a great band

My chick's a big fan. Knows one of the original members family from Jeffersonville, IN.

Louisville is such a good music town. Soon as mama wakes up I'm putting some Squirrel Bait vinyl on. Thanks for the push!

Overall.

But when it comes to Purple Rain? YUP!

Still a Top 10 all timer for me. Maybe Top 5 if I'm pushed to think about it.

Speaking of Tool:

I never knew Danny Carey used to play with Jeff Buckley????? I guess I'm not as big of a Buckley fan as I profess to be.

Now I have to figure out how I can watch even more iso cams of Carey drumming on Youtube.

Estepario is amazing at speed and tricks but I don’t know anything of his compositional abilities. Carey is a True master.

Without a doubt. He even rats on himself in that reaction vid. Where he says something to the effect that some drum fill was so human... not machine. He's a machine. It's a new kinda fast but it lacks what makes Carey great. I saw a perfect comment about Carey in one of the gazillion vids about him: Carey's what happens when art meets 4 calculators, cuz each appendage keeps it's own time signature then does it's own solo on command.

It's just fun to watch him go all fanboy over the things Carey does that he knows he doesn't.

I've been meaning to deepdive Tool/A Perfect Circle entire catalogue. My brother is all about them, he's a mathematical dick.

I'd seen that Prince solo, I remember the story behind it is he was kind of being disrespected. He nailed it. He definitely showed his abilities to a bunch of unfamiliars. He'd always been talked about positively by guitarists from what I'd read. Obviously a phenomenal performer.

Maybe I'll listen to some early Prince. I don't know. I don't know if we'll have enough time

Prince was awesome.
Maynard is an interesting cat. Went to West Point for a short time and apparently the wine from he makes is very good. BJJ practitioner as well.

We were in Punta Cana, DR away from cell service and news when Prince passed.

My lady picked up an American news paper while we were at breakfast and just started crying. Headline - Prince Died. That purple SOB almost ruined my vacation lol.

My son is doing a deep dive into tool. His favorite songs is Wings for Marie but then I walked him through the lyrics and I could see a level unlock. Good times.

Prince is one of those I probably took a bit for granted until he died - b/c he'd kind of always been around and beyond a few of his greatest hits wasn't quite my jam - and then you saw the outpouring from people about how much his music (and his whole persona) meant to them. And whatever one thinks of his technical guitar skills he was also, obviously, a phenomenal performer. Respect.

FWIW, I did once go see a Prince cover band at a bar in LA and it was a pretty fun crowd/show.

His wine is good. Going to his joint in Cottonwood tomorrow on the way to the snow in Flagstaff.

Saw an interesting short about his BJJ background featuring Rage Against the Machine / Audioslave guitarist, Tom Morello. Apparently they wrestled in club against each other while in HS as Morello's frpm Chicagoland and Maynard's from near Ludington, MI. Was surprised Morello beat him. The connection goes on as Morello was the one who introduced his former HS bandmate, Adam Jones and Danny Carey to Maynard and that's how Tool was formed.

Also, I think the story about Maynard goes he attended the West Point Prep School but didn't matriculate to the Academy for whatever reason.

I'd prefer Maynard's lighter stuff with APC, I think he experiments more with them, and they have a different sound than Tool. Howerdel is a pretty good guitarist.

I’m an old soul with music,… and I’m a collector of things,… so aside from my collection of whiskey Myers and JJ grey (which I’m proud to say I now have every release of his on vinyl, Blackwater was really hard to track down) I pretty much listen to my parent's music on vinyl. Just got some new vinyls, CCR, Katrina and the Waves, Otis Redding, Taj Mahal and Steely Dan,… all new or originals but like new,… that pretty much covers my spectrum. I’ll be listening to each over the weekend
