2022 - Clemson

2023 - USC

2024 - Texas A&M, Georgia, Penn State

All of these wins were absolutely massive.

The players were uncertain, but optimistic. Within the program, and administration, the majority were very pleased Kelly was gone.

@Merckxe525, to play devil’s advocate and as a spinoff to that question … I’ve always been intrigued by the mood and psyche of sports’ teams and franchises. This question is much more palatable to ask as I know the end results (meaning, we competed for the national championship), but can you describe the mood, aura and psyche of the team and football ops following the Marshall, Stanford, and more so, the Northern Illinois losses? I assume the Marshall and Stanford losses in 2022, while bad, was more of a MF’s first year as head coach, but did football ops have any uneasiness? I’m truthfully more interested in the Northern loss as it was in year 3, immediately after we went to College Station and looked fired up, locked in and focused. Then, it was just a complete 180 the following week to a vastly inferior opponent…apathetic, lethargic, unprepared, going through the motions. A total rollercoaster or bipolar team in 2 weeks. Was it a “oh shit moment” within the team? Was it a stern, “come to Jesus” moment with Freeman and the team or between Freeman and Jack/Board of Trustees — meaning, that is wholly unacceptable and not to happen ever again, are we clear? The team was just so locked in after that and determined that something had to change.

If Cincinnati wasn’t in the CFP in 2021, who would be the HC today at Notre Dame?

While Marshall and Stanford are "unacceptable" losses...there was less panic around those. As soon as Buchner was hurt and even prior to that wasn't playing well, I think the entire program knew it would be a shaky year. There were legit concerns on Buchner coming into 2022..let alone the team having to go with Pyne. Miracle is too strong of a word but a lot of people I talked to in the program were encouraged by 2022 because of the massive limiting factor(s) under center.

If I'm being honest, I think there was more angst around the Clemson and Louisville losses in 2023 than the 2022 losses....specifically Clemson...it was around this time the program actively started looking to jettison Parker.

re: NIU (and most losses like this) I think fans have this perception of massive conversations and these hollywood/dramatic moments. There wasn't a come to Jesus moment with Pete B(not Jack) or the BoT. There was no need for one. Everyone knew there was no excuse for it, but Freeman and the team also has the issue diagnosed pretty early on..even within the NIU game itself..it's just tough to make the adjustments that needed to be made in real time.

Freeman knew he was coaching for a massive extension in 2024. Everyone knew the expectations of the team. It was simply on Freeman to diagnose and correct the problem(s)..which was done in short order. The ND leadership on the team was strong and maybe the biggest thing Freeman did was in that moment, not make a big deal of the loss in the micro, but make it a macro issue about focus, attention to detail, and relentless pursuit of perfection.

I assume by this comment that Parker was absolutely not going to be the OC beyond that season.

What truly were the issues for the NIU game? was is as simple as the team overlooking the opponent / not preparing properly / lacking attention to detail? Were there scheme / personnel issues? The whole talking to coach Hammock about how he was able to scheme up a victory always made me think it was more than just overlooking NIU / lack of focus, and more of a scheme issue (specifically on run fits)

I felt like this was way overblown. IMO Hammock was just taking advantage of the situation to get his name in the spotlight and try and help NIU get some publicity. All the talk of this meeting was coming from his end.

Nothing is ever "simple".

Did ND "overlook" NIU. Yeah.
Did ND not have the attention to detail they needed? Also the case.
Scheme/personnel issues? Yes.
Natural let down/adrenaline dump game from A&M (call it the traditional "trap game" mentality) Yes.
Recovery issues? Yes.

Most good/great teams can overcome one or two of these things happening against a lesser opponent. It happens a lot. ND they kind of all happened at once.

Had very little to do with run fits or things like that. The scheme issues were mainly on offense.

don't let Driskell read that...
Not sure anyone here is at risk. Driskell might be borderline illiterate.

Tying this back to something we were discussing earlier....who else here is SHOCKED that Driskell was so openly standing on the table for Zaire when Zaire's parents were such an issue and funneling Driskell intel?

Merck, it seemed to me after he left that Jack put up zero fight to keep BK and tired of his complaining about NDs shortcomings. I don’t want to say he seemed relieved but he seemed to expect this somewhat. In an alternate universe, what would have been the end of BKs tenure if he didn’t go to LSU? He built a successful program with stability, but obviously the relationship was tired. Was there a plan in place or were they truly caught off guard? And to add on, who scouts opposing coaches and keeps track of positional coaches and coordinators in case openings occur? Sorry for long winded questions and thank you for giving some great insight on how the sausage is made. I’ve learned a ton here.

I assumed that Zaire's family had Driskell on payroll

You're not far off....that relationship had run it's course.

Whatever high paying college job came calling next..or BK "retiring"....only to come back and take a job in a year or two.

Honestly, there is a world where BK is at ND for another season or two maybe..and takes the Alabama job when Saban leaves.

Lots of alternate universes out there but BK wouldn't have been at ND long after had he not left for LSU.

Merck,

Place percentages on the reason for why Kelly left

Huge long term contract
Facilities
Recruiting

I've always felt the line that BK used that he left because he thought he had a better chance at a championship as just a good story line he could sell. I've always felt that 90% of the reason that he left was for the money. Obviously I could be way off.

Recruiting 5% (BK was the limiting factor here) When BK left and Freeman took over there was an entire overhaul of the recruiting department. BK would go entire seasons without even meeting with the recruiting staff. He basically let it operate on it's own and the assistants were much more involved.

The other two are linked. BK wanted a huge contract (long term) but he also wanted guarantees for facilities et al as part of that contract (as they always are at places like ND)

I guess if you had to put a % on it.. Long term contract money...75%?....facilities 20%..but as I said..that 95% is linked together

s there anybody that you were surprised didn't have a good pro career after they left ND and on the flip side is there anybody that you were surprised did have a good career in the pros whether it be physical or professionally concerns or question marks?
Sorry, missed this part of your question:

I didn't think Manti would be great in the Pros, but I thought he'd be better than he was...that's not an exciting answer though. I'm a little shocked CJ Prosise didn't do more in the NFL.

Obviously was shocked at how long Mathias hung around the NFL

Zaire came back in 2016 expecting to have his job back (because BK told him he'd have it back)..Kizer expected to have the job because he played so well. Kizer also came into camp ~20lbs overweight. Kizer said it was to take more pounding as a runner in 2016, which..sure..maybe..but it wasn't good weight and came off as lazy. Zaire couldn't be out a "fat" Kizer....BK ham handed the QB competition and let it go on for too long even after it was clear Zaire wasn't the guy.

Was the locker room "split"? Kind of..but most supported Kizer....that team has way bigger issues though and IMO the lockerroom split had less to do with Kizer v Zaire and more to do with the coaching staff being an absolute mess and causing issues all over the team.

Tbh, I could argue the locker room was as split or more split at points in 2009 on Clausen v Crist.
I remember watching the Irish docu-series that year & when BK looked into Zaire’s eyes after the UVA game & told him he’d have his job back, I knew that was gonna come back & bite him in the ass. Hell, I may have said the same thing in the moment w/ cameras on me & not knowing what Kizer would do post-UVA but man that was the beginning of the end for 2016. And I don’t blame Zaire & family for being upset after BK promised him he’d have his job back. Thing is it was obvious Kizer was the better QB after the 2015 season. That season should’ve been the one where ND finally won a NY6 bowl but injuries & getting matched up w/ OSU was a recipe for disaster in that game. Meyer should’ve won the natty that year & probably would have in the current format.

2016 was a mess and I know people gravitate to the Kizer/Zaire deal because it's an easy example, but I think too often it gets labeled as "the" reason or the "primary reason" for 2016 going the way it did. I typically reject that.

It was a factor, but if I had to make a list..it might not make the Top 5 for reasons 2016 fell apart. The program/team had some fatal flaws/cracks in it that had been coming for a few years. Kizer/Zaire was just a symptom of those cracks.

Agreed - especially the Back Room. I can’t tell you how many posters have assisted me over the years, via the Back Room. There are many good people who post on the site.
Yep, the Back Room is a great resource for some really random requests and questions. All of the Olympic sports have a dedicated board with very passionate fans (e.g. lacrosse, women’s bball, ND baseball, etc.) and the Political board there has a lot of really smart people across the political spectrum.

I feel like Manti still hadn’t recovered from the Lennay situation and rightly so.

He played his senior year with so much confidence and swagger and I can’t even imagine what that incident did to his psyche. Especially going into a NFL locker room with all of that stuff hanging around him must have been toxic.

I was a student worker for the athletic department for Central Michigan University. This job entails working home sporting games, working the front desk of the IAC which had the weight room indoor practice football field, indoor track, and other things. It also housed the football coaching staff among a few other sports coaches. I had a few run ins with BK nothing major (minus getting chewed out by him for goofing off on a golf cart) but when he took the Cincy job he came back through with his nose held high like he was the shit. I kinda took that as the mentality you needed to be a head coach. The new staff came in and they were way more friendly. They would pass by and ask how you were doing. I understand they were probably just trying to be nice but still meant a lot to me. The head coach even would ask me about some of the CMU swag he should wear. I guess my point is if BK was like this at CMU i could only imagine how he would have been like at ND behind closed doors. Go ahead now make fun of me like message boards normally do.

Eh..maybe. Teo was also more beat up than people realize....he was a human wrecking ball for four season. He was also coming to the pros when his style of MLB was falling out of vogue. If he's in the 1998 draft, he's a Top 5 pick. Even if it's the 2005 draft..he's maybe Top 15.

Manti was never going to translate to anything special as a 3 down LB'er in the NFL.

I think it's a combination of things: play style, injuries, his own ego, some of that mental stuff...

but also I trend a little more "anti-Teo" than most because I think he carries a lot more blame for that situation in 2012 than he ever accepted/addressed.

Many will naturally assume Fickell. However, based on the people within Notre Dame who preferred Marcus, I feel confident saying Marcus would have still been hired. There were some power brokers who wanted to go after Urban one last time, but that was never going to happen because of his rather embarrassing personal choices.

Re Urban
These are the three common theme with him a) not flying home with his Jags team after playing on the road b) getting caught with the co -Ed’s c) treating his players like dogs.

Anything else under the radar with him that you can share
