Based on what I've been reading and hearing for the past year, I think ND could be the highest bidder for certain high school players. It's just that Derek Meadows and Deuce Knight weren't worth it to them. For a generational talent that is also a fit, I wouldn't be surprised if they made a whale offer.
Coach Freeman has said many times we are going to major in recruiting and minor in portal. Sadly recruiting today is a bidding war and we must accept that. We must trust the coaches that the kids are fits and worth an upfront check.

FWIW, Mike Frank said there were a lot of players in the 23-25 classes who went elsewhere because they got a big bag, that would’ve been completely fine at ND had they been given a bag. He said they wouldn’t be locker room cancers or anything.
I have read that, and I have no idea whether ND should be paying kids out of high school, but the kid may not be an issue, but the situation could. For example, take Rodney Dunham. Let's say ND offers him $2 million NIL package right out of high school. Meanwhile, a pre-injury Boubacar is sitting there, not making nearly that, and begins to think about his loyalty to the program. Again, no idea if that would be an issue, but I could see that being a problem.

Freeman stole that from USC's GM Chad Bowden.

Seems like an impossible thing to know for sure

Since NIL was implemented, this is one of my many concerns and have no idea how coaches navigate this. But huge disparities in "paychecks" amongst 18-21 year olds, with parents and "uncles" still in their ear, with absolutely nothing that keeps them from jumping ship, has to be nauseating to deal with.

Someone like Kaleb Beasley comes to mind
Him, Peyton Bowen, Keon Kelley, Justin Scott just to name a few another thing is we need to do a better job at landing kids whose brothers went here. Just imagine if we had Cody Simon and Styles on this team for defense?

No inside info, but I wonder if he'll hit the portal. I believe he was Tennessee's 4th corner this year and the 3 corners who were ahead of him are all returning.

Interesting thread. I remember when LSU got Austin Thomas, it was supposed to be some huge deal. Frankly, I can't tell you his worth...I truly have no idea if he's great, good, average, or poor at his job. That said, these "GM" roles are evidently necessary as the sport has changed. I still think the actual coaching staff and their roles are infinitely more important. In terms of scouting and recruiting, they know talent when they see it and not some needle neck that never put his hand down in a three-point stance. Also, 9/10 times, if a recruit you're interested in has offers from Texas, Ohio State, LSU, Georgia, Alabama, Penn State, Michigan, Oregon, Clemson, Miami, etc. chances are he's really good.

I know Oregon pays a lot of money. But they identify talent well. I guess. Lots of "5 stars" but nothing to show for it. Our 3's and 4's have had more success.
Ehh....I don't know if they necessarily identify it well. Oregon, thanks to Nike, has really created this unique brand of football. That "brand" includes facilities, uniforms, offensive philosophy, and such. It's pretty easy to attract any elite 17 year old skill position player there.

Thomas is making $425k a year fwiw

Here's some info I found on Football Scoop:

-- Alabama general manager Courtney Morgan: $775,000
-- Oregon chief of staff Marshall Malchow: $550,000
-- LSU senior associate AD for football administration Austin Thomas: $425,000
-- Ole Miss general manager Billy Glasscock: $425,000
-- Ohio State general manager Mark Pantoni: $351,488
-- Michigan general manager Sean Magee: $350,000
-- Texas general manager Brandon Harris: $264,500
-- Texas A&M recruiting general manager Derek Miller: $175,000

LINK

Not going to lie, I chuckled when I saw Brandon Harris was Texas's general manager. He was an awful QB at LSU.

Younger brothers choosing to go elsewhere was a bit of a thing in the late Kelly years, one that I don’t think it has anything to do with bags.

Sampson on II pod said they are going to go with a two person hire

Said this the day Bowden left and I think it’s a great move with the changing landscape.

Do you think they’ll let me work remote from Fort Wayne running the program for Freeman?

While Bowden was a great recruiting coordinator, playing video games with high school kids, costumes and shticks on visits, his role vastly changed with the sport in a very short period. Maybe being a full fledge GM and recruiting coordinator is an overload and ND could potentially elevate here.

We whiffed pretty heavily in our summer OV’s so maybe it was time for all to move forward and reset.

I wonder if ND will consider having a GM and RC role moving forward with the RC reporting to the GM. This would allow the GM to be bigger picture and be more financially focused, as that role has heavily shifted that direction.

Apparently a bunch of goods not just the two person hire were shared on the Irish Illustrated podcast (why use your paysite) today

I haven’t listened so don’t want to misrepresent

Which, I assume means whomever we hire, won't have been a "GM" at a big time program before?

Not necessarily. Most GMs are former Recruiting Coordinators that are being jammed into this new GM role and all its responsibilities. They could hire a GM who is willing to separate responsibilities back to what fits their strengths

I believe the Iowa, Cincy and multiple SEC GMs are tossed out on the pod as options, but I haven’t listened

John Brice mentioned Tyler Barnes, Iowa's GM and "Chief of Staff". A name to "pay attention to."

Kinda concerning topic on the podcast was brought up do we see a jump in recruiting because of being in the title came, John Brice basically implied no because NIL is such a hot topic with recruits and he didn’t come out and say it but you could tell that he was implying that unless we change the way our NIL is structured those big time recruits are gonna be looking elsewhere

Having now listened to this, O Malley and Prister kinda did this oh no hurry to make a hire thing and then Sampson basically said well I think they will hire two guys and implied ND knows who they are

So this sounds potentially more imminent that made out to be

The key isn't totally changing the landscape of ND recruiting classes though in my opinion. It's getting 1-3 more top tier/top 50 type dudes. Get 2 more per class and that's 8 "dudes" over 4 classes. ND is just never going to pull in top 10 guys unless they are unique individuals. Add those guys and spend big money in the portal for immediate needs and that's the recipe IMO.

Agreed with the sentiment. There is no hard defined category either. It could be 1 more top 50 or 2-3 more top 100 or maybe 4 more top 150 players. Stack those improved classes over time.
