People can question Freeman's judgement pulling Ash off of the street and not promoting Mickens. That's absolutely their prerogative. You are totally correct, however, that the vast majority of us have no idea how things work behind the curtain. If Freeman hires Ash and doesn't promote Mickens, he has his reasons.

I don't follow any of these guys anymore, but it sounds to me like under Freeman there are not a lot of leaks or not as many under Kelly, so the beat has trouble getting intel?
Totally agree. Honestly, my take away from is this — Marcus Freeman does not want Mike Mickens as the DC. He has known him since HS and Mickens has plenty of of experience on paper — Freeman would hire him if he thought he was competent to be a DC. The “Co-DC” offer is an effort to keep him around another year or two because he is an elite position coach. Mike Mickens will never be DC at ND.

Sure, but he was always Driskell which meant that he needed therapy, even back then. I gave him $5 about a month ago, just to see what his site was about - was always curious, y'know, like watching a car crash.
Holy moly does that guy have issues... I'm surprised that anyone could pay him an annual seeing how badly he talks down to people who dare question his holiness and infallibility. He seems to enjoy the groveling of his sycophants as well. Anyhow, it's pretty bad over there and his site reminds me of geocitites.
Sad to hear he is still this way on his message board. I joined the message board a few years ago and quit it after several months for the exact issues you mentioned. To Driskell’s credit, when I requested a refund he gave it to me, even after I told him what my objections were.

It was in this episode. He brings it up at about the 36:30 mark and then gets a bit more specific at about the 40:00 mark. Prister was recalling his favorite moment with Golden and he said it was when Golden rolled his eyes at him after asking a question which caused Prister to snap and storm out of the room. He was laughing the whole time he was retelling what happened so it's obvious he knows he overreacted.
No wonder he had a heart attack. The dreaded eye roll. Prister must have never had a teen age daughter

Good for you, sincerely, and that was professional of him. Do you think that it was a mix of professionalism and protecting his ego or just a gesture of good will?

You are jumping to a lot of conclusions here.

Mickens is 37 and the average tenure of a coordinator is 2 - 4 years. If Freeman is long for ND, saying Mickens will never be DC at ND is ridiculous. Freeman knows better than anyone that being a first time ____ at ND is hard.

Fair. Though average tenure doesn’t play into the equation — if anything it makes it easier to take a risk on Mickens. Freeman became a first-time DC at 30 (I believe) — if you’re ready, you’re ready. Could Mickens prove himself elsewhere and return to ND? Sure. But this industry is far too unpredictable to think that is likely.

Honestly, I think he was doing what he thought was the right thing. I get the impression he is a decent dude when he’s not in his emotions.

Definitely maybe to the former, in dire need of better emotional regulation and maturity to the latter.

The best part of this weeks Prister saga is he’s providing inside scoop on Coogan’s recruitment this whole time

Comes off as hilariously tone deaf to have multiple threads on Coogan right now lol

Always felt like the ND beat guys should do a round table podcast at the end of the season. I know they are all competitors but it would be entertaining AF for everyone who follows them. Too many of the services just have guys who never disagree with each other and it does not make for great listening every week
Prister went on Driskell's back in 2023. I agree, I'd like to see more of it.

Thing is, back in the day before everyone and their dog had a podcast, they actually were a pretty good duo on power hour.

Frank was less crusty and Driskell was less pretentious know it all cocksuckerish.

That's impossible.

Congrats on not becoming one of the "Coach Driskell" cultists lol. You are made of stronger stuff than most.

Today's II pod is <muah> chef's kiss.

O'Malley gettin a little excited shitting on the notion of "discord in the OL room." He was absolutely right and it was a pretty good rebuttal to Driskell's nonsense.

Brice bringing up how coaches at the AFCA meeting were praising Rudolph, and Prister speaking up about the job Rudolph did this year, as well.

II pod, last subscriber Q: If you weren't a sportswriter, what would you want to be doing?

Prister: Oh, I've always wanted to be a sportswriter

Brice: I used to be a radio sideline reporter, and I loved it. Would rather be doing that.

O'Malley: a sommelier

Ok fellas, I’ll break up the pizza talk, kinda. 😉. Like at times enjoying pineapple on pizza I’m finding myself enjoying the IB podcast, occasionally!
Like this episode…
