Before, I thought Pate gave some pretty fair analysis.

Not sure where he basing this take other than SC having nothing to lose... the fact that ND might struggle in a close game since they've rolled everyone after wk2 and SC won't because that's how they play every game?? GTFO with that trash take.

Keeping this receipt.
"USC has led in the 4Q every game they've played."

So has ND, dumbass.

Don't think that takes away from his point. Yeah, ND has led in every 4th quarter. And I wouldn't want to play us either.

I watched his preview. He kept quoting that 5 of USC's losses have come after leading in the 4th, and that was more than the other 5 teams who have lost after leading in the 4th combined. His point was that USC has been somewhat unlucky, and are better than their record.

To which I say 5 games is not enough of a sample size to say they've been unlucky, and it's more likely they simply aren't that good.

Otherwise, why change your QB? Why have all the other teams who have led in the 4th had minimal to 0 losses?

He's been super against the Irish all year even though his model had us way higher than he ranked us.
He seemed to get real cocky after last year picking UL to upset ND. He’s picking like a fan in that he‘s predicting subjective stuff like ”team A will come out flat” or “they haven’t been tested yet because they’ve blown everyone out”. Like someone else posted on this thread…he could be right & have everyone eating crow but you can’t maintain your rep on “gut feelings” or guessing the mental state of either team.

Look at the ND beat writers. They know this team inside & out (for the most part). They’re basing their picks on their eye test + what teams have shown thus far. That’s all you can do is go w/ what’s on paper w/ the caveat that the better team is truly focused & doesn’t sleepwalk.

This year’s SC team is a bit similar to the ‘16 ND team. Other than their finale in LA that year, all of ND’s seven other losses were close w/ the largest margin being 8 pts. By the time the 2nd quarter rolled around, ND was done in LA. Hoping the Irish can switch roles this year & be done w/ the Trojans early. If not…just win

Yeah, it's weird. Last year he went to ND for a game and seemed like he got it. He did a big segment how ND wasn't overrated. Then he predicted Louisville, and he must have realizedil he gets more clicks and views going against ND. He's picked against ND every chance he had this season and always mentioned that the model had them way higher than he did. It's funny that he never revisits his predictions after ND wins...

Probably described well earlier in this thread, but forgive my laziness: How good is the USC DLine and their linebackers? Notre Dame's OLine has a somewhat weird (an highly enjoyable) characteristic of looking somewhat pedestrian on many plays, and then WALLOP the whole left side of our blocking will just GASH the opponent and someone like Love or Williams will hit that gash hard and ... Gone. Maybe I saw that back with Nelson and McGlinchey some, but the size of these gashes are huge. Does USC's DLine and middle LBs match up well with that? If not, then I like our chances to maul and gash our way through this game.

In total Defense - USC is ranked 65... in Rush Defense - ranked 43rd.

This team is just playing on another level right now & national pundits are mostly ignoring that.

Army walked away from last week absolutely beat down..

No reason to this D doesn’t terrorize USC & Riley/Love/Price fund the end zone more times than they do.

We are definitely playing well. The D is doing amazing. The offense is still mediocre.

If our D plays to their ability, this is a 2-3 TD win.

The offense is doing very well as the season has progressed- the passing game is a bit mediocre. Total offense is ranked 40th - total rushing offense is ranked 10th.

They are sixth in scoring offense. They get a lot of short fields because their d is one of the best in the country. I will take 39 points a game every year with a top rushing offense.

You know who else didn't get rolled before Notre Dame came to town? Navy and Army. Not saying SC isn't better than them (also not saying they are). Point is ND has a way of imposing its will since NIU. I don't see a 4+ score victory, but I don't think 2+ is an outrageous likelihood.

USCs DL is like the rest of the team- slightly above average. Nobody really stands out as a guy you can’t handle. They are starting to use a 6-6 freshman, Fountain who is going to be a force but is pretty inexperienced as of now

Not that anyone would pick USC outside of trying to be contrarian, edgy, subjective (crazy things happen, man).

In a game between two seemingly equal opponents (this isn’t the case), I’d think the easiest criteria for choosing a winner would be:

Better QB- ND
Better defense- ND
Better ability to run the football-ND

There is zero metric outside of “feelings” that would make anyone pick USC in this game.

I’m not saying USC can’t win (they can), but anything more than “I have a hunch USC will win” is based in complete bullshit.

Not sure I've had so much nervous excitement about this game before... Maybe 2012, but man kick off needs to get here already.

They lost 5 games this year but only 1 at home, which was in OT vs PSU. That's all I got.

I get the points thing, but I value the ability to be able to flex between the Run and the Pass. We can't do that yet. And, when we run up against a team that can stuff the run, we are going to be in a world of hurt.

The two best Rush D's we played against were Army and NIU. Let's not pretend they play good teams.

Army was number 1 in rush defense before the game. Maybe they aren’t actually good but then you shouldn’t use that stat to measure who the best run defense we played is

Josh Pate is an SEC idiot and his model and opinions are fundamentally broken. He was good a few years ago and then once his profile got raised he fell off. My sports gambling buddies and I were fading his "Ramen Noodle Express" picks early in the year.

Rumor on 247 board of a flu bug hitting USC but a quick Twitter search says it was last week. Anybody got any insight?

I find a Twitter thread that said it was last week but it's lingering in a few players.
