The amazing thing is last year at this time Cignetti was head coach at James Madison and a scant 12 months later he’s bringing down $8MM a year. Talk about upward mobility……I’ll bet his wife is ecstatic!
And the beneficiaries of his estate

We've got a couple of Tom Herman fans on this board don't we? His name has come up more often than not during OC searches or the "fire everybody" dumpster fire threads after a loss.

This guy is 60-36 as a head coach, isn't even 50 yet and has somehow been fired for the second time.
Yes. I recommended him to replace Chip Long. But to be fair he was the only coach I new outside the ND set up and I thought he was the TC Williams head coach.

It seems Lane has given these guys the false impression FAU is a stepping ladder type position, but now Herman like Taggert before him will likely never be a Division 1 head coach again.
Unless he is willing to move down to a Sun Belt / Conference USA type program.

Lane is obviously a controversial figure, but going 26-13 in three seasons at FAU will always be incredibly impressive to me.
I would be surprised if those numbers are seen again on that campus anytime soon.

You're probably correct. He's the only guy who won there. He did it on the back of some very good recruiting work by Charlie Partridge and his staff the three years prior, but Coach P didn't win enough games when all was said and done.

Taggart is an RB coach for the Ravens. He had five college HC jobs. I'd say he's done.

Not sure what would be next for Herman. He's 60-36 as a head coach, which is mostly on the back of his two years at Houston, but I think there is more baggage to him than his wins and losses.

Bill Clark has mentioned recently that he’s talked to a couple of schools about the possibility of returning to coaching. A place like Southern Miss should back the truck up for him.

Is is earning a NFL coaching paycheck, but I doubt anyone in the NFL is looking at any coach in Cleveland and clamoring to hire them away.
I don't think that's how the industry works. He's the TE coach for a franchise that has been a disaster for decades. Not a lot of culpability there on him. It's who you know. Some of these guys just keep getting jobs and it isn't for the results they've produced while on a staff.

If Sean McVay admires Rees as much as people say, if something opens up there TR could have an opportunity. TR was with the Chargers when Mike McCoy was head coach. McCoy (now with Jaguars) could land on a staff and recommend him. The list goes on.

Honestly, I have no fucking clue why Rees would entertain a job like Rice. I know many here think he's inept, but Rice would need Rees a hell of a lot more than he would need them. I think that goes for just about every one of these G5 jobs currently open at the moment.

Guess we'll see.

Have no idea if he'd consider it or come back to college, but if Shannon Dawson gets a job this offseason based on the performance of Cam Ward, I could see Miami throwing a bunch of money Rees' way. Cristobal tried hiring him when Kelly left for LSU.

BK may beat him to the punch. I suspect he’ll have to make some staff changes. LSU OC is not Rees’ ultimate goal but it could fastrack him above TE Coach in NFL if he can succeed in Baton Rouge.

Maybe, but Cristobal could offer something that BK can't: job security.

And maybe I'm seeing things, but it always felt to me like Rees bristled under Kelly, and wanted to escape his shadow. Maybe nothing to it, but it's why I think TR ended up staying on Freeman's staff rather than following BK to LSU.

Dawson's name is coming up a lot, but financially these OC and DC jobs are big steps back to G5 head coaching jobs. If a guy really wants to run his own program for the first time or for a second shot, he can do so but he's going to take a significant pay cut.

Hence I'm not overly concerned that Denbrock or Golden are going to go anywhere for those kinds of jobs.

I see Gino at the top of The Athletic’s list of candidates for the Central Michigan job, and they say he’ll get looks for P4 OC jobs this offseason. Which makes sense, and seems fine, tbh. He’s been solid for us but hardly irreplaceable).
I kinda wonder if Wisconsin would come calling.

Tulane HC Jon Sumrall is the guy whose name is already circling. 23-4 at Troy in two years, currently 9-2 at Tulane.

UNC is probably looking at Indiana and thinking they need to find their version of Curt Cignetti now.

Unless an NFL team comes poaching, there's a good chance UNC will legitimately be the biggest opening this offseason.
Aside from the other benefits, making a good long run into the playoffs does protect us from poaching. A lot of lower tier teams like Rice, Kennesaw, Charlotte, etc - the ones who would be looking at a coordinator (for HC) or position coach (for coordinator) can't wait until mid/late January to start discussions with candidates.

I wonder if Chuck Martin will get some attention. He's done a very nice job rebuilding Miami of Ohio.
