The 4th seed has been a joke during every ranking reveal. Auto bids need to be shot to the moon. Just rank em and stack em. Period.
Yeah the problem is that this system was designed with 5 Power Conferences in mind. The idea was that your 4th highest seed would probably be a really good team from the PAC12/ACC/Big 12. Now the PAC12 doesn't exist AND the Big 12 got raided. So you only have three real power conferences for 4 spots.

4th seed being a joke only really works in our favor. Every year we should be in serious competition to get that 5th seed and that's honestly the best spot in these new playoffs.

Maybe, but who knows how it plays out in future years. If Miami and BYU ran the table this year, which wouldn't have been too difficult based on their schedules, and a two loss SEC team won their CG, it could have been 1. Oregon, 2. Miami, 3. BYU and 4. Insert two loss SEC champ.

It will be interesting to see where the committee ranks the loser of the BIG and SEC CG. If Oregon loses, they are a lock to get 5 imo. If any of the other potential losers are ranked 5 and 6, it may be a signal that ND would have to undefeated or 11-1 with several good wins and a close loss to take that 5 spot.

Without the autobids, if ND wins out, it's a near certainty they are getting the 5 seed, at worst, and would have a real chance of getting a bye.

I am calling bullshit on the whole Alabama is cold crap. I’ve lived all over this country and I can tell you, from the mid rims of Kentucky/Tennessee/Virginia they have no clue what happens to a typical weather north of central Indiana/Illinois/Missouri. It’s a whole different cold north of that zone. The windchill isn’t tropical, it’s Arctic.

I’ve ’hunted’ in southern states up to Wisconsin. You don’t worry about freezing to death in Tennessee.

When you spend 10 months a year in 80+ degrees and 90% humidity, 40 degrees is cold!!

lol!!!

No matter what they do the people still won’t be happy. And I am sure if you had even a little bit of a brain you probably saw this coming too.
Did you really expect anything different? The NCAA expanded from 24 to 48 to 64 and 68. People still piss and moan.

Yeah, that's not how that works in most parts of the South. I grew up in north Alabama. We saw sub-zero temps occasionally. Below freezing and even single digit temps were fairly common. It gets about as cold there as up north. The difference is that it typically doesn't stay bitterly cold for weeks at a time. Every Southerner has spent plenty of time hunting in the woods, working construction, sitting in a HS football stadium, etc., etc. in freezing temps for hours. We can play football in the snow and ice. Look at how many of us do just fine in the NFL in GB, Chicago, Denver, and elsewhere up north.
Tuscaloosa's record low is -1F.

The issue isn't what they're used to experiencing in the coldest parts of winter. The issue is what their body is used if/when they travel to South Bend. Tuscaloosa's mean daily max/min temp in December is about 58/38. In South Bend it's 36/23.

The average wind speed in Tuscaloosa in December is 3.25 to 6.5 mph. In South Bend, IN it's 8.5-16 mph. Plugging the mean of those values into a windchill calculator gives us a more accurate representation of 58/34 vs. 28/11. Of course, that's based on averages.

I wasn't asking as a dick...more just curious as there are people that even refer to it as "The Region."
Ask any Region Rat about "Da Region". They know to the block where it starts and stops and SB isn't anywhere near it. Amirite Bobby?

Not just the fourth. Both the ACC and Big12 are undeserving of bids, let alone byes.
Maybe the SEC media will realize this and stop complaining. ND and the BiG are not stealing bids from the fifth best SEC team it’s the other two P4 conferences

Weather might not hurt the Tide much but it might keep their fans at home.
They’ll need to save their money for the other three games anyway

Not buying it my friend. I can tell you there is a difference between weather in Northern Indiana and Central Indiana alone. Usually about 5 degrees. Average temp in Tuscaloosa is 59 on Dec 21. In South Bend it's 36. Coming up the day before a game isn't enough time to acclimate to a 23 degree difference. Even greater if they play at night.

I would invite the Bama posters to take a couple weeks off from this Notre Dame board; the rhetoric is getting a liiiiitle whiny.

There is an epidemic in college football talk show discourse where fans and talking heads aren't watching games or even looking at box scores, just looking at wins and losses.

On the Bish side of the ledger, coldest day of my life was in Northern Virginia when my gear choice was poor and temps dropped big at 2am. Plus Bart Starr did win power the Packer win in the Ice Bowl.

On "Different kind of cold" side of the ledger, I give you Miami at the 2010 Sun Bowl.

I like the Irish to win first round anywhere from 95 to -5 Fahrenheit.

This is a good point. For like six years running this setup would’ve given a top four of Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma and one of Bama/LSU/Georgia. That’d be just fine (and often was the four team playoff).
Now Clemson has fallen off and Oklahoma/Texas are in with Bama/LSU/Georgia and Boise makes the top four.

Only thing that hasn’t changed is the Pac-12 doesn’t matter.

This thread made me remember the 1st week of January in NW Iowa hunting whitetail years ago, 18 inches of snow on the ground. That’s the year I tested the limits of how long I could stay in 0 to 10 degree weather when properly suited. The testing of your limits is a more serious matter in those conditions.

My advice, stay away from all 3. They’re designed to make people upset.

If Boise St gets a first round bye, it will guarantee the end of the first round bye format. I'll keep banging this drum - eliminate conference championship games and start playoffs a week earlier.
You can eliminate the conference championship games but if you think the major conferences are not going to insist on automatic bids for the conference champions, whether decided in a game or regular season wins, you are not understanding how demanding and greedy they are. The BIG and SEC are already trying to demand that each get 4 teams in no matter their records.

I live in the south, and not even the Deep South - NC, they bitch, moan, and freak out when the temp drops below 55. I freeking laugh my ass off at them. I cant even say how funny it is when 2 inches of snow falls. I dont dare drive any more in it not because I cant handle it but because how bad they are all at it. I have been down here for 20 years now.

I would say it doesn't have to do with the number of teams getting in, it has to do with the conferences and the shitty setup of the regular season schedules. The way schedules are made there is no way to fairly tell who should make the playoffs. You dont see this kind of bitching about pro sports because the divisions aren't setup by who makes the most money. They are set up by region and each division sends its best representatives. People don't typically bitch when a shitty team makes it in being in a crap division that year because they know they will get exposed. Thats how college ball needs to be setup if they want the bitching to stop, but that will never because A. They like the bitching and it keeps the conversation about the sport going. B. There is too much money in major conferences and the presidents of those universities will never give that up unless there are class action law suits brought forth by the schools that are being kept out of that gigantic pile of money.

TAMU continues to be the team nobody is talking about. If they beat Texas at home, they go to the SEC champ. From afterthought to potential #2 seed?
They have to beat Auburn too, and Vegas is far less confident than I would have guessed. Only a 2.5 favorite this weekend @ the barn.
