In the year Fernando won 21 games, he pitched 20 CG. Just doesn’t happen anymore.

As a kid, my dad would take me to MiLB games in Little Rock where the Arkansas Travelers were a AA team in the Texas League. The Dodgers had an affiliate in San Antonio so we always went to the San Antonio games. I would always get as many autographs as I could and was able to snag a lot future MLBers like John Franco, Orel Hershiser, Mike Marshall, Sid Fernandez, etc.

One day I had gotten my 1B mitt signed by the entire team before spotting a young kid playing catch w/ a batboy. I asked my dad if he was a player or another batboy. He said, just hand him the ball + pen & he’ll surely tell you if he’s not. He just grabbed it & signed it & it turned out to be Fernando.

Many years later Fernando returned to LR on a rehab assignment w/ the Angels AA affiliate. Every father/son in LR was there it seemed as they allowed SRO on the warning track which seems crazy looking back. Fernando pitched a 1-hitter.

RIP to an all-time great player & person

Actor Ron Ely died a few weeks ago at the age of 86, but the family just announced it to the public yesterday. Most of you won't recognize the name, but in the 60s he played Tarzan for a couple of seasons on TV. To schoolboys of that era, he was as big as Batman or Superman. Dude had an interesting and varied life. He was a big star in the 60s, a tall, handsome, athletic guy, dated several famous actresses such as Ursula Andress, Dyan Cannon, and Britt Eklund, hosted the Miss America Pageant a couple of times in the 80s, married a former Miss Florida who was about half his age and had 3 children with her, and later published two novels. By all accounts a genuinely good guy and well-liked by virtually everyone he knew.

Fuck cancer.
We had a Bloodhound, her name was Pearl. Just the most loveable dog we've ever owned. She developed a lump on her hind quarters. Found out it was cancer. My wife said she would never spend a lot of money on a pet, yet when it hit home we spent a tidy sum to have the surgery. Unfortunately she developed another mass under her belly about six months later. It was quickly taking a toll on her where she lost weight quickly. We decided it was best to let her go before she suffered anymore. It's never easy. RIP Ben.

That’s awful. I’m sorry. I spent $7k on my daughter’s dog’s emergency surgery. Six years later, he’s still here and as dumb (and lovable) as ever. It’s really gonna suck when his time comes.

Seems like dogs are getting cancer more and more.

Food?
Pesticides outside?

Wonder what's going on.

Sorry to hear about your losses, cancer does indeed suck and we all love our dogs.

Not cancer related or even a dog, but about 3 years ago we had to drop in total about $10k to save our cat. Fat fucker kept getting blocked up and couldn’t piss. After 3 times plugging him with a catheter the vet finally did surgery to cut his pecker off. Been fine ever since (knock on wood).

Dog lifespans have largely increased over the past half century, meaning they live longer and are more likely to develop cancer. Additionally, people are more likely to spend the money nowadays to get their dog checked out and get the cancer detected. Would be interesting if there was an actual study to show the rates

You could’ve done that for free!

That is what sucked about mine...he was at the vet 6 months prior and checked out fine. Literally 1 week he just went lethargic, quit eating so I got him in and boom, cancer everywhere. I was ready to do whatever, but vet said as fast as it progressed, it would be no use

Just lost my 7 year old chocolate lab last week. Was acting lethargic and wouldn’t eat. Rushed him to vet. Splenic mass ruptured and had 2 1/2 liters of blood in his stomach. Had emergency surgery to remove his spleen and had complications during surgery and lost use of his right hind leg. Brought him back and they wanted to amputate. I said fuck no I’m not doing that to him. Had to put him to sleep at 2 am last Friday. Biopsy came back and said he had hemangiosarcoma and would’ve only had a month to live. Beating myself up over doing that initial surgery and putting him through that with no possible recovery. They truly are part of the family and give unconditionally. Be well all.
