There is divide amongst those not actually on the team. Every fanbase does this. If he was better, they wouldn't have went out and got Leonard.
What was discussed by the beat writers and this board at the time, myself included, was the fact that ND had to look for a portal QB no matter what because the QB room was too thin and too young. They had just lost 2 QBs to the portal the year before in Pyne and Buchner and would have had only SA, KM, and CJ to start the spring. MF couldn't risk SA or KM winning the starting job, the other transferring, and then being left with only 1 inexperienced QB as the starter and only 1 scholarship backup who happened to be a true freshman.
They had to get a portal QB.
Now, if one of those 3 guys had been a Trevor Lawrence MF might have come to a different conclusion, but I don't think this was simply a matter of they didn't think Angeli was good enough to be a starter. Maybe they thought that, but I think it's much more likely they thought their QB room was too thin and too inexperienced, so once they committed to looking for a portal QB, they also committed to finding someone they thought would be the starter for 1 year and then hope that they would have at least 3 scholarship QBs to start the year rather than 2. The fact they ended up with all 4 sticking around was a great development (I think RL's injury played a huge role in SA's decision to stay).
Now, none of this is to say I don't think MF shouldn't have some buyer's remorse. I think he made the right decision to go after a portal QB. And with what most experts knew at the time, it was also likely the right decision to go after RL. BUT, now that they've had ample time to coach and evaluate him, there is no good reason to stick with him as the starter no matter what. By now, MF and staff should know whether or not RL gives them their best chance to win. I don't think he does, but I also think the staff plans to stick with him until the next time the offense struggles in a game. If that's the plan I hope they make a switch in enough time to make a difference and then commit to that switch.
