Certainly the movement to put up those statutes from the late 1880s into the 1960s was fueled by confederate apologia and racism, but I don't think that necessarily makes the people who grew up in that culture with those statues and names as bad people. They were raised with a revisionist version of history and that's something we can address as a society (like by taking down the statues of people who were clear enemies of the United States), but again I don't think that makes them fundamentally bad people, confederate apologists directly, or neo nazis/white supremacists. I grew up in Central Virginia, drove on "Jefferson Davis Highway" every day on my way to school, and frequently would drive down Monument Avenue in Richmond when my family would go into the city. I was at first against taking down the statues because I thought they were apart of the history of the city and the people who lived there, but as I grew older and learned more about the context in which those statues were constructed, my mind was changed. You are no a confederate apologist/racist because you understood why the statues were put up much much later than before the civil war. My classification is that if you (not you personally) are going to a protest about a topic you are presenting yourself as someone who is knowledgeable on that subject. Whether or not you actually are is on you. So, if a person goes to protest ABC they are going with the intent on defending their position, if that position turns out to be centered in something that is inherently awful (confederates) you are rightfully going to face criticism. If I don't know who Warren Jeffs is and I think that he's a religious leader who got wrongfully prosecuted and I get called a fucking moron, it is my responsibility to understand his history.
