I believe him when he says that he’s in the collegiate game because it will allow him to have more control/time in developing the athletes. He’s in it for the right reasons. That’s a big part of it. However, up to this point he just doesn’t get me quite as hyped as Balis did. Hopefully that’s just me.

Not that this should be surprising (what else are they gonna say?) but ISD reported in their Intel piece this morning that the returns on Landow have been very positive.

Not going to step on ISD's toes, but one thing that jumped out at me (again, take with a grain of salt) is that Balis was a wonderful culture builder, but many players felt that they went into summer camp fatigued/beat up due to the areas he emphasized in his programs.

The piece was not a dig at Balis, just something players had reported when comparing Balis' approach to Landow's heading into the latter's first fall camp.

Balis was great for what would be good in the past. Similar to Maroti at Ohio State, athletes are different now and the science is so much better

He's worked with NFL teams that have longer schedules. With the CFP and potential for two or more additional games, his experience fits right in.

Did we ever find out why Balis left?
I kind of figured if it was philosophical differences with Freeman that someone else would have scooped him up in the offseason. But that hasn't happened. Which makes me think it really was some sort of personal life situation and he needed to take some time off (as was said at the time).

It's kinda a combination. He hasn't moved on to anywhere else cuz he doesn't need to / want to, he wants to spend time with family. Making that decision was in no small part because of friction with Freeman over how he wanted him to train the team.

Tbh -- I'm a huge Freeman fan, but from the version of this I heard, I think he messed up here.

Last I heard Balis and Freeman didn't see eye to eye Freeman wanted to shift to more of an analitical approach to conditioning where Balis wanted to stay old school

I heard someone else offer up versions of what happened and they also thought Balis should've been retained. After I heard the story, I think Freeman made the right move, even if it was a hasty decision precipitated by having an "awakening" for how modern strength coaches could operate.

The odd thing about all this is the colloquial title of the position is no longer apropos: Strength and Conditioning has given way to Power and Speed. No one wants raw strength per se, it's more about power - ie - the ability to rapidly produce force. And speed is the ultimate seperator.

Conditioning should almost be non-existent when prioritizing the energy systems to be trained. You can build training volume while continuing to monitor key benchmarks for decreased performance so you can identify breaking points in the athletes.

Landow's hire will be seen as an inflection point for the program, especially after the compound interest represented by players having multiple years in his system.

The doubters better unload the clip because the target will shrink moving forward. (coming from someone who has done far too much research on Landow)

That makes sense. IIRC Balis has like high-school aged kids. Tough time to uproot, and I'm sure he was well-compensated at Notre Dame so he probably won't starve if he takes a couple years off.

I hope Landow is great.

Balis was great at his job at ND. The boys sure never looked tired during his time here.

Balis was definitely needed when he got here. Huge turnaround.

However, towards the end, there were grumblings that maybe his style led to some of the foot and hamstring problems of players.

I liked Balis, what he did at ND, and it showed on the field. I was also shocked at how he left, especially since he introduced to the team that Freeman was the new HC at the time.

I like what I've read about Landow and I hope to see results on the field this season.

On one hand it was surprising that he left abruptly right before the start of the season. On the other hand - as some pointed out at the time - most of a S&C coach's work is really done during the offseason, so maybe that timing was intentional for all involved.

Yeah, Balis could've left during the spring and it seemed to be a mutual split between ND/Balis. Regardless Balis did a great job at ND with the S&C program.

What a job by his staff. Our guys looked read for the challenge. The I line had some issues but we didn’t look tired or cramping up.
I mean we all sort of bagged on Marcus for moving on from Balis…but maybe he was right?

We looked fast and nobody went down with cramps in south central Texas. That’s pretty huge.

In person i can honestly say i didnt see a single layer with hands on hips or looking gassed all night. They physically dominated the last 10 minutes of the game.

A&M seemed to have more issues with the heat than we did...

Yeah, lack of cramps was not on my Bingo card for this one. We struggled the last time we played Florida State down south in August. I thought we'd get a little bit of a repeat of that. I was shocked that it was A&M guys going down with the cramps and not us!
