Between the injury redshirt and Bama redshirt, does he have 3 years of eligibility?
Played 10 games in 2021 but only 3 in 2022 and 2 last year so he has at least 2 more years of eligibility 24 and 25. Extra years seem easy to get these days just threaten to sue and they give it to you it seems.

I don't know if the lacrosse eligibility goes out the same number of years or not.

Would be awesome if any would-be transfers could read this letter before making their decision. What a great perspective he has, seeing the big picture and not just the instant gratification.
Kind of an incredible story there. Interesting aside about taking 21 credit hours in the spring. Maybe his Alabama credits didn't transfer? Of course if the rumor of him getting a million bucks to go there is true so what?

As for Tyler Buchner’s return to the program, it’s a decision that wasn’t made lightly. Buchner met with Freeman to see how he could help the program on or off the field in some capacity recently and the final decision was that he would walk-on as a receiver.

“Three weeks ago, he asked if he could meet with me and I said sure,” stated Freeman. “He just wants to help the football program. He said, ‘Coach I want to help the program. I love Notre Dame.’ He kind of went through some different capacities with the last one being if I would let him on the team. I said we’ll follow up after your lacrosse season.

“I met with the coaches and talked to some of our players and came to the decision that we’ll allow him to walk-on to the football team, but at the wide receiver position. He can help us at any position, but he’ll go into the receivers room. We don’t know exactly what capacity it’ll be. He’ll be on the team starting in fall camp as a walk-on receiver.”

Guessing freeman didn’t want to create any issues in the QB room as Minchey and Angeli are probably already considering a move.

Decent chance he took a light course load at Alabama

Will he be a PWO? ( Paid walk on)

I see him as being in the first year as a GA and starting my a coaching career.

Yeah. We already have more QBs who need to play than we have reps to give them. Adding Buchner to that mix, as a QB5 with more game experience than three of the others, probably doesn't help anyone.
That said, he doesn't seem (or move) like a WR, exactly, either. Could see him as a sort of H-Back or split-out TE. Whatever. He's a tough ballplayer who clearly loves and cares about Notre Dame. Glad he's back.

There’s a chance he’s QB2 in 2025 if Carr causes Minchey and Angeli to transfer. Probably would prefer him to freshman Deuce.
This is a good point. I think they would struggle to land a transfer to pad out the QB room if they already have an established starter.

Such a touching and incredible story. Guy bails on ND then they let him back. I’m all warm and fuzzy in the feels.

Are you as upset at ND for paying lots of money to a transfer QB to start over Buchner? Or are we supposed to only be upset when the 20 year olds look out for themselves?

The guy has a bowl MVP and a LAX championship to his name. He's done way more for ND than most.

Im just not gonna act like this is some sequel to the movie Unbroken.

It’s time to move on. Imo . But since he’s here hopefully he helps us on the practice squad get ready for mobile qb’s.

I mean, we aren't using a scholarship spot on him. He's not in the QB room either, so I think we've "moved on". But what it does do is reinforces that ND is a unique place for players to come and be accepted, grow, make mistakes, and still be loved and a part of the brotherhood if they put the work in. That makes the culture and locker room stronger.

He's paying his dues by literally paying to play instead of his scholarship. I literally see no negative here, tbh.

I guess I’m more a once you walk out that door you’re dead to me guy but I see the other side too I guess.
I can understand that. I can sympathize with the mindset of "if you left, it's more about the guys still in the room that matter." It's a very unique circumstance, absolutely, and it's bound to bring up some powerful feelings. Cheers.

You say it like he was an essential part of that lacrosse championship

Until you watch that mixtape! Crazy to think that's a 14yo Buchner playing WR.
