Yep. If Golden wants to win a Broyles and write his own ticket, he should stay one more year.
Grown-ass men up front. Two all-american caliber DBs (assuming Watts comes back). And a fleet of LBs who are more athletic than what we've had the last couple of years.
If we can find a second safety and develop one more good pass rusher (Traore?), holy shit.
Right.. and obviously we're not expecting Kahoun, Rezac, KVA to have immediate impacts but ideally we have a few studs emerge from the rest of them.

All that is said while hoping KVA is in fact a day 1 impact player lol

Not sure we need a safety. O’Leary is earning his keep. He has done a great job for the most part with that group.

To be clear I don't necessarily think that second safety has to come via the portal. We could also "find" one on our roster. It's just not immediately clear who it'll be. But yes O'Leary has been great.

I see Al Golden honoring his 3 year contract with ND, especially with what he's built at ND, and with who is coming back/coming in.

If he has a successful year next year like he did this year ND needs to pay him.

Safeties on roster:
Watts (still not confirmed)
Shuler
Talich
Powell
Urlacher
Shuler
Minich
Johnson

There is absolutely nothing proven here after Watts, they need a safety.

Retaining this man might be the best off season achievement.. The 2024 defense on paper is more athletic than this years, especially at the LB position.. What was an incredibly efficient defense could become even faster & more violent if these guys are coached up.

Bowen
Ziegler
Zinter
Kahoun
Rezac
KVA
Sneed
Ausberry

This is one hell of a list if these kids can play free & fly to the ball.

2024 is a potential top 5 defense if Al is here.
ELITE talent, speed, skill, smarts, and aggression on all three levels.

Agreed. Now they must get into the playbook and now it inside-out and outside-in. Golden's defense requires 'EVERYONE' to know their assignment and execute. When that happens, it's a thing of beauty.

The safeties could be incredible next year because I think we'll be capable of generating even more pressure on the QBs. Talich, if he can pack on a little muscle and stay healthy, could be a fantastic FS next to Watts. The other safeties might make a jump as well. I wish we could bring in a high floor guy so we could set the bar with a transfer and our young guys could compete for the reps. Lots to be excited about as we start to move to 2024

Can the dude from ASU play deep if necessary? Or is he strictly a nickel?

I don't know - Adon Shuler is so good he gets listed twice. That has to count for something.

Al Golden doesn't strike me as a guy who does things solely based on money. If that were truly the case, I doubt he winds up at Notre Dame at all, let alone accept a bunch of money just to stay. He took the Miami job at 42 and it ultimately led to him being in the NFL for six seasons as an assistant coach until becoming a coordinator again at Notre Dame. This isn't Mike Elko we're dealing with.

We've got the older and wiser Al Golden. I'm here for that guy.

The other thing is if this defense lays an egg or two in 2024, the same arm chair athletic administrators wanting to throw bundles of cash at him are going to be the same ones calling for him to be fired.

So
Any word about a contract, or are we still sheeting ourselves over the possible NFL openings?

Looks like a Bengals guy (Callahan) is getting the Titans job. No idea is he has any real relationship with Golden or not

So you're saying he needs a DC.

No, I don't think I did. He just became a first time head coach, so in reality, he needs an entire fucking staff, but whatever.

I said they've worked together on different sides of the ball in the NFL with two different teams. Hard to say that Callahan has "a real relationship with Golden or not." They may never have broken bread or shot a single hole of golf together.

I don’t mean to sound the alarm, but he hasn’t been on the road recruiting now for 3 straight days. It could absolutely be nothing, but something to keep an eye on.

If it was any other coach I would be very concerned, but it's not uncommon for him to be the only coach at times not out recruiting.

Could be something, could be nothing, like you said.

Mickens was with Freeman a couple of days.

I still think Golden stays to honor his 3 yr contract and Mickens is our DC at this time next year.

There you go thinking again. -- Seriously, that's asking a lot but I hope you are correct.

How is Mickens being with Freeman relevant to Golden? Coaches go on their own regularly. Sure, glad Mickens is staying and hopefully he’s the next DC. Doesn’t change the fact it would suck if Golden left. He had been on the road last week. He’s not this week. Again it could be nothing. But given the NFL interest it may not be

ISD has stated several times that Golden can kinda pick and choose when he travels
a lot of the visits right now are to kids already committed or to just make social calls - no evaluations/workouts (bar Cali guys it seems). Not really sure Golden is required for these types of visits

No one of relevance seems to be mentioning him about NFL DC jobs.

There are a dozen openings right now (???). Assumption is his phone is ringing at worst.
