Another Shooting

There is no genuine conversation on guns. People are worried about safety, but the media and gun-control folks will run any shooting that fits the mold they like and run it to the front page and hide any shooting that doesn’t. When we see the radical restrictions posed by gun grabbers in parallel with terrible policing and prosecution ideas- why would anyone want to discuss these bad gun ideas?

We’ve seen an uptick in trans shooters and that gets buried. Trans shooters don’t have materials leaked, but if you supported Republicans or said something racist—> front page.

I owned a sporting goods store for several years and I got very jaded with the whole youth sports scene. It’s a mess.
Parents were vocal back then, they just weren't getting into physical confrontations with the coaches or other parents. Since we won the league one year, I was the HC for the All Star team. The fastest kid in the league a RB couldn't remember the plays no matter how many reps we gave him in practice. We're playing when his dad pulls him from the game and takes him home because he wasn't starting or getting to play as much as he thought he should. Both times we called his number, he ran it wrong. lol That's the worst it ever got for me.

It’s become a lot worse since sports have become so specialized. And sporting goods producers have made equipment so expensive. Parents are now investing so much money into equipment and lessons. With that investment comes a lot of anger and frustration when they don’t win or their kids don’t play as much as they feel they should.

Ps… and it’s never ever their own kids fault

Mass shooting in Lewiston Maine. CNN reporting at least 16 dead. 40-60 injured.

Sounds like the shooter shot up 3 places. The last being a bowling alley.

Damn, prayers for those people. It's unbelieveable that so many people were injured and the suspect got away. Apparently Maine has the 14th lowest homicide rate with guns, maybe people just feel safe there so they don't carry?

That’s a lot confirmed to have passed already. And a lot injured that might go either way. Hope that number doesn’t go above the already listed 22.

Really? How's that?

22 dead, dozens more injured across 3 different locations right? Usually by then someone carrying would have taken the guy down, or he turns the gun on himself, or police have shown up. Seems like the odds are the more damage you inflict, the less likely you escape.

I'm wondering how often someone carrying is able to "take the guy down" based on what we've seen over the course of these dozens of incidents this year. Turning the gun on himself seems like the more common outcome followed by police showing up and apprehending the shooter (typically alive?). I don't know precisely what the data points show, but I find the events of last night in Maine to be anything but "unbelievable." Appears very typical of what we've grown accustomed to.

I support first responders, but it certainly does seem like there is a response time to these shootings that isn't fast enough, not that it can be blamed on them. The pure chaos of these scenarios is something I don't even want to imagine. In this instance, the shooter had military training and was armed with a powerful weapon. We're talking rural Maine here, right? Even if armed, what does the average person at a bar and or bowling alley in Maine have on this guy?

The details coming out about this shooter seem to include all the Greatest Hits we've grown accustomed to. The added twist is he could have fled the state by boat. Here's to hoping any of your three scenarios play out before he murders anyone else. I'm thinking two of your three are most viable.

We had an asshole go into Greenwood Park Mall earlier this year and open up in the food court. A young man and his girlfriend walked in. The young man then pulled his gun and put down the shooter. I don’t know how often it happens, but it does happen.

He hit the gunman 8/10 with a handgun in a high-stress setting. Pretty impressive. I need to hit the range more

As we relax training requirements we're more likely to get a gravy seal firing into the crowd while trying to hit the shooter.

Europe somehow seems to manage better without armed citizens deterring other armed citizens.

Completely agree, but in an active shooter situation, I'd rather have a gun available. Of course I say that, but I virtually never carry a gun outside my home

I'm probably two years from having to go to bifocals. I'm not going to carry a gun with me to go to the dry cleaners. I don't want that, and I would tell my community they don't want that either.

If someone enters my home uninvited, that's a different story. What I am hearing, and forgive me if I'm misunderstanding, is that when I LEAVE my home to go to the store, church, my office, my kids' school, a movie, the gym, virtually ANYWHERE that is OUTSIDE of my home...it's better for me to armed living in this country just in case?

I can't speak 100% on Maine's politics, but we could predict with pretty decent probability that this is going to cost him his seat next year if this is a reversal of opinion.

The optics of changing his stance because this happened in his home state....I don't quite know what to make of that.

Golden is a former Marine and one of five Democrats in the House that opposed an assault weapons ban.

This happened in his district. He's a pretty reasonable dude and polls well above the party. My guess is this moves opinion in his district as well.

Doing more than we do on gun control is actually pretty popular because our laws are so lax. Going as far as say the UK would be unpopular. Backing stuff that was law through the 90s doesn't seem especially dangerous.

I only know of Golden due to his military service and his winning a race in 2020 in a district that Trump carried. I just read this morning that He votes with Biden 85% of the time, which is the lowest of any Dem in the Caucus. Just based on these tidbits, you'd assume he's more center left and could appeal to the moderate voters. Makes sense. His 180 on this and how it plays in that district I don't know, but that district has now experienced one of these events first hand and maybe it changes opinion.

Every time something like this happens, we have the same damn discussions over and over again. We're not a serious nation, and sadly that includes not only the voters but the people we put in office at all levels. Unserious people elect unserious leaders. The rot leads to extremism. Throw in another large portion of the population who are more apathetic than serious and this is what you wind up with.

It feels like that assault weapons ban that fell off under W. Bush was a lot longer ago than it actually was.

If we were a serious nation more people would follow Golden and change their minds. The solutions are pretty clear. The issue is you need 60 votes in the senate to do anything, so it'd require a mea culpa from a lot of red state senators.

Mild/moderate gun control is a good issue for dems along with Healthcare. Golden can still break from the party on some fiscal stuff, immigration, etc.

It's an Obama/Trump district and only R+6. It's the kind of seat that allows a dem to take some liberal positions as long as they balance them.

It appears, at least with the info that's out, that the Maine shooter was having serious mental health issues. He was in the Army Reserve and they sent him for two weeks of in-patient psychiatric treatment this past summer, and the guy's family says he had rapidly deteriorated over the past few months and had been hearing voices.

The book didn't age well. Especially when other people ran his models with more up to date data.
Data has been skewed mainly in recent years because of defunded police, left-wing DAs, and left-wing rioting. People will pretend St. Louis became more dangerous because of a carry law than defunded and handcuffed police.
