According to John Brice on this week’s II podcast, ND is cautiously optimistic that Golden will return. Working on a new contract. Reportedly turned down an opportunity to interview for a college football head coach position
Huge maybe a 2-3 year deal?

If this is true, that tells me he really likes ND and working for MF.
I would bet he loves that his head coach takes the lead in recruiting while he can focus more on game planning and coaching up the kids that are on campus. I hear he isn't into the recruiting side of college ball, can't blame him, so having a defensive minded head coach who leads in that aspect probably makes Golden more reluctant to leave. That and they did mention that he has really accepted the University and all its about.

ND probably doesn't mind having one staff member who doesn't recruit so they can send Bowen on the road. And it makes sense that the guy who stays home is the DC/LB coach since, you know, Marcus Freeman can probably handle those parts.

Getting Golden is huge. Getting Golden when we're breaking in all new LBs is even huger.

We've heard that he doesn't like recruiting, yet there he is, in all of those pics with recruits that have been posted recently.

I am "assuming" its probably not as much the in home visits with the family, but more the day to day grind of texting and kissing 15 - 18 year olds asses that he takes issue with. At least if it was me that would be the issue I would have.

Best news of the off-season given how much the defense carried the team in my opinion

True but I'm sure there's pictures of bvg and Clark in. A recruits home somewhere too. And we know we saw BK in houses.

Doing the work and liking the work aren't the same.

True, but he's showing up and that's half the battle.

Penn St is Golden’s alma mater and looking for a DC. Another reason to pay this guy.
Or a reason you wind up bidding against yourself to give the guy a raise he already deserves. He's not being mentioned in any of the click bait articles as a candidate at PSU. Seems like a lot of talk about Zach Arnett and the guy at Rutgers.

Might be important to note that Al Golden only spent one year at PSU as a coach. He was LB coach and immediately bolted for the UVA DC job. Lots of people play ball at lots of places but it doesn't mean it's all a natural fit to end up coaching there. The opportunity matters more because in the end these are just jobs to these guys. The "true to your school" bit goes so far, so long.

As for Golden, I think he has it made in the shade right now. He gets to coach up smart kids with NFL tactics and schemes with young coaching colleagues on the defense who handle the heavy lifting with recruiting. He can stay at ND for as long as they'll have him or until the right gig for him comes along. I don't think Penn State DC is the right gig

Had a buddy who played catcher at Ole Miss. I assumed he was an Ole Miss fan. Nope still a Hogs fan despite his Alma mater.

Ole Miss has a lot of those - especially the TX kids. A lot of them are from the Dallas area who couldn't get into UT, so, instead of going to A&M (or maybe they couldn't get into A&M), they went to Ole Miss, but Texas is still their number 1. Hell, essentially every SMU or TCU alum I know (1) couldn't get into UT and (2) pulls for Texas.

I also have some friends from BR that are huge LSU fans, but went to Ole Miss and pull for LSU. They wanted a change of scenery - can't say I blame anyone who wants to leave their hometown / not attend the hometown university. The Ole Miss / Alabama NOLA folks are different, however. They hate LSU.

Everyone gets into A&M, even if you don't apply.

Retaining this man might be the best off season achievement.. The 2024 defense on paper is more athletic than this years, especially at the LB position.. What was an incredibly efficient defense could become even faster & more violent if these guys are coached up.

Bowen
Ziegler
Zinter
Kahoun
Rezac
KVA
Sneed
Ausberry

This is one hell of a list if these kids can play free & fly to the ball.

Yep. If Golden wants to win a Broyles and write his own ticket, he should stay one more year.
Grown-ass men up front. Two all-american caliber DBs (assuming Watts comes back). And a fleet of LBs who are more athletic than what we've had the last couple of years.
If we can find a second safety and develop one more good pass rusher (Traore?), holy shit.
