Unless we aren’t too upset by the idea of Angeli or Minchey being the starter. Are the options that much better than those two?
I wouldn't be upset if the QB competition was between Angeli or Minchey.

I think taking Leonard is a risk because of his injury. The downside also taking Leonard is the same with Hartman, ACC teams played against Leonard (my only downside to taking Hartman).

If ND takes Leonard, I think Angeli leaves, and if Leonard got injured ND would be screwed.

Angeli's not going to leave before the bowl game. After the bowl game he'd have like three days to decide before the winter portal closes. Maybe he leaves in the later window, after spring practice, but at that point he'd have a serious uphill battle to win a starting job at anyplace worth going to. Or he stays and is one injury (from a guy with some injury history) away from starting. Also he was an EE and will be an academic junior in the fall, he may well be on track to graduate by this time next year. Also Minchey has a higher ceiling and Carr is clearly coming to play.

In other words, if Angeli leaves, he leaves. I'd bet against it. But if he does, we'll be OK. I wouldn't let Angeli be a deciding factor here.

If ND got Leonard you don't think Angeli leaves?

I agree I think Minchey does have the higher ceiling than Angeli, but right now if I had to decide between the 2 I'd start Angeli.

With next season's schedule I think ND can pass for a 1 year rental at QB.

It makes sense for Angeli to get reps during bowl prep, start the game, then transfer for the spring semester

Well I didn’t like Leonard from Big Bang Theory but also this delay and his mothers you suck thing.
All the characters on the Big Bang sucked but Penny. This delay is nothing, he was on campus for the first time wed-Thurs and its obvious he is already committed. He is committing publicly Monday. This whole thing has escalated very quickly. No need to let our impatience with a public announcement make you "over" him.

But yeah F Leonard from the big bang

I just don't really see where Angeli is supposed to go.
He does not have the resume to walk in and claim a P5 starting job. He was not an elite recruit and has played basically mop-up duty for us Maybe he could show in spring somewhere and compete for one. But no guarantees there. Would he want to throw away QB2 at Notre Dame for a "shot" at QB1 at, I dunno, BC or Iowa? Why?

This is the most likely scenario for him. He gets game reps and tape for more than mop-up duty, he finishes his spring semester and has more opportunities.

It's not that's he'd be looking for guaranteed starting opportunities. He's in a position at ND where there is a guy one year behind him and another 2 years behind him with essentially the same experience but who are generally considered better prospects. If ND coaching is looking at "the future," then Angeli would be the less-upside option. If he wants an opportunity, he'd be better served at a place like Wake Forest or BC or Rutgers where he'd be given a chance to both compete and, if he wins, make mistakes without a marginally obsessed fanbase expecting every QB to be a Heisman or 1st round caliber player from game 1.

A few retorts:

1) Teams played Leonard with practically zero help. His receivers were non-existent and his OL was bad. At ND, he has significantly more talent to work with.

2) His injury was unfortunate, but I don't think it's anything chronic we need to worry about. Ankles get rolled, it happens. The problem this year was Duke tried to get Leonard out there when he was clearly still dealing with the sprain. He'll have more than enough time to recover before spring and should be good to go.

Riley and Ja'Mori Maclin are now following each other on Instagram.

Seems like a lot of high profile transfers are following and following back each other. Makes me think they are using similar agencies for NIL negotiations or something like that and are communicating for financial reasons rather than any sort of “come follow me to school X” motive

Yeah, ND is definitely in a position of strength with all of the high quality QBs waiting on our call.
Well, of course not, we have to go after them and there are some out there (not a lot) who I think would be receptive. Just saying have a backup plan. Hopefully all is signed, sealed, and delivered. Just don't want to see a Don't-ee Moore scenario. Hoping for great news tomorrow!

It’d be nice if Riley would lock it down already, but I just don’t see how we’d be getting these top-flight transfer WRs if he isn’t coming here.
