Well, Braylon James and Barnes are both underclassmen. If the "70% weren't asked back" is accurate and not hyperbole then they would fall into that number.
Barnes was a junior, and given he was an EE, very likely he leaves a degree in hand and is a grad transfer.

So we started with taking 4-5(Driskell) transfers and now we're up to 7(Sampson). We're getting closer to double digits.

Driskell's count came before the unexpected underclassmen announced to transfer. Staes, James & Flores opened up another three spots.

I believe Nana is one of the guys they wanted back. Quality depth with experience is what ND had in Nana and now they are looking for that type in the portal.

The staff definitely decided to move on from NaNa. They are looking for a starting caliber quality player at Big End. No disrespect to NaNa, but he was not that guy. He's a rotational dude that can provide 20 snaps per game.

They want one of the young guys (Ford, Vernon, Gobiara) to provide that role next season.

we still do 4 year scholarships not 1 year right. so if a player doesnt willingly enter the portal what can the staff do?
I guess the hope is for the staff / athletic program is that the kids love of actually playing college football in the end out weighs thier desire for the ND degree and they believe that in almost every case the player that is "asked" to leave will in fact do so.

However, this is a very good question.

No, but Tyree was a makeshift WR and the TE room is loaded. The others have a higher ceiling to "break out" if Tyree was gonna break out, he'd have done it 5 years ago.
How? By constantly running him up the middle! He was used poorly but showed plenty flashes.

I find it very hard to believe we would push out James (or even Merriweather for that matter). Would be a radical departure from the way Notre Dame has done things as recently as a year or two ago, with a true freshman at a position of need.

Maybe we didn’t try that hard to keep them but that’s different than being “not asked back.”

O'Leary's recent twitter follows:

Maxen Hook, Toledo (not in portal; yet) - would be a 6th year player
Savion Riley, Vanderbilt - redshirt sophomore, first year starter at Vandy (48 tackles)
Dillon Thieneman, Purdue (not in portal) - true freshman, Big 10 Freshman of the Year, from Westfield, Indiana

But NOT a mass amount from 1 position (WR).
No doubt. Just responding to folks acting like our beat reporters are dropping bombs with the number of transfer expected. Anyone can do the math on their own.
