Yeah, but that's not the reason.

Picking Clemson is fine, as they very well could win. But he didn't really give any explanation why. He basically just followed up every reason why Pete thinks ND will win with "I'm not so sure about that".

He's not a Notre Dame beat guy and it has shown all year. Hell, on his own podcast, Fortuna took a backseat to O'Malley last week.
Spending about half that podcast talking about Tim's flag football teams and Freeman's remarks was a bit self-indulgent

Tim was a "special guest" on that episode - and Pete / Fortuna gave him the floor, they wanted to highlight him as a guest (plus it was Shittsburgh week for crying out loud) ... but Tim O wasn't being indulgent, he was playing the segment.

Hence why Tim O and Tim P barely even mentioned it on II. (minimal time discussed, more professional focused).

I tried my best to give Pete’s new pod a chance. Fortuna really does ruin it.

Same thing. I'm not sure why he is even on an ND pod. It's like he doesn't even watch the games.

Oh to be clear, I didn't think it was indulgent on Tim's part (might have worded my previous post poorly), but on Pete and Fortuna. After 10 minutes of it I looked at my phone to see if it really had been that long of a segment, and sure enough. Loved the little tidbits about the coaches at the kids' sports events though, that was pretty neat.

I've never checked it out. Fortuna's a non-starter for me. Just an arrogant dude with no current knowledge or insight on the topic he hosts a show about.
Yeah he’s not fun to listen to. Check out Locked On Irish Podcast. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s a 2018 ND grad who covers sports for Fox Sports. Very professional and gets some good guests like Pete Sampson.

I got about 45 seconds into the Joe Schmidt interview this morning on the Independent before I had to turn it off and delete the podcast. Ex players just have zero insightful things to say they are just couch fans with knowledge of the program at a probable lower level than your average IE member. Ian Williams, Chris Finke’s interviews were the same. Just completely pointless. Joe didn’t even know Xavier Watts name he just called him “The Safety”. Cringe

Didn't even waste my time listening to it. I would rather listen to most of the IE members than Joe Schmidt. He's not a media member and has no connection to the team. Not to mention he was not a good linebacker. He just happened to be the only person who could somewhat understand BVG's god-awful defense.

The great thing about former ND players is that they’re usually thoughtful, well spoken & media savvy. That’s also a problem when listening to them as guests on pods. They’re always going to support the coaches, players & teams & use all the typical “coach/player speak”

For podcasts, always a bad listen
-former players
-next opponents beat writers/media types
Nothing interesting out of either
I thought the Clemson guy Pete and Matt brought on was pretty fun. Damn near won me some money too, X Watts was just about 3 yards too short...

ah now don't forget the time Pete had Grace Raynor on a podcast and was asking her about which beers and breweries she recommended around Clemson University and she stone faced replied I don't know i don't drink

I say this a lot, but I spent nearly a decade as a sports reporter and no athlete or coach I talked to ever said anything interesting. I don’t even know if it’s their fault - analysis isn’t their thing.

I remember Tony Kornheiser saying that he didn’t want coaches and athletes as guests on his radio show because they were boring and had no insight worth sharing.

Anyone hear Driskall compare us not starting a young qb to Congress kicking the can on the budget? I was laughing so hard

well not a lot to choose from like for instance listening to Mike Frank is even worse or he was really awful to listen to a few years back when i would turn on his power hour show once in a while.
I like Mike Frank. He knows his stuff and tells it like it is. My favs are II, Inside ND Sports, ISD and the Independent.

There are exceptions, often in baseball (I worked as a sportswriter for a bit as well, and veteran pitchers were often very good interviews.). And, like, Pete Sampson's occasional series for The Athletic where he gets Notre Dame players to talk about a few of their plays is sometimes really interesting because it gives you the game the way players see it.
But, generally, yeah, blech. These guys are probably not trained to dwell on and overanalyze things (That's what actual journalists, bloggers and message boards are for), and so mostly they speak in platitudes.

A mound of dog turds isn't better than one pile of shit. It's just a lot more crap you have to deal with.

Really any analyst that wasn't upset with War Daddy being promoted and didn't state that having an inexperienced OC will cost us games this season isn't really an analyst but another Homer spouting their deluded thoughts of ND grandeur. Unfortunately, that includes most of the beat writers and analysts. Certainly, IB. In fact I didn't see any analyst that was highly critical of the internal, cheap hire. It was more like, okay lets give him a try type of get-along attitude.

We will know when ND has gotten serious about being a Top 10 program and it starts with have a Top 10 staff to begin with.
