Honestly, it sounds so dirty, but for these reasons, you have to at least consider joining the Big 10. Hopefully the Big Ten West. This seems to be the way for the Big Ten right now.
Michigan does same (they just win the two big game they play instead of losing them). The CFP system is *supposed* to encourage playing a big non-conference game to boost your SOS - playing us will help Ohio State stay in the hunt if they lose to Michigan - but if you're content to go 10-2 and make an NY6, there's really no downside to scheduling soft.
Of course it does not help that the Big Ten's middle class (MSU, Wiscy, Iowa, Nebraska) has fallen off the last few years. The conference schedule just isn't very hard.
And we can dump the awful Stanford "rivalry", stop getting screwed by playing into ACC BYEs, not get shafted by conference refs, increase annual revenue ~20%, get to play in a conference champ game (this is subjective, I love that weekend of football and want ND to be part of it knowing it can help or hurt us).Honestly, it sounds so dirty, but for these reasons, you have to at least consider joining the Big 10. Close to a lock for the playoffs each year (have you seen some of those schedules?). Instead, going into this year we knew we were starting down the barrel of OSU-USC-Clemson + Duke/Louisville/etc (who, quite frankly, are not Iowa/Wisconsin/etc - they’re better)
Plus we gain the potential for a first round BYE if we win the conference championship. If a main goal is getting over our national championship hump, this would be one of the faster routes, no?
I wouldn't get upset over it. No one really pays attention to Penn State under Franklin. He has them a step below where Kelly had ND. They have never made the playoffs under him, and he is 1-9 against OSU.Penn St failing upwards over the last few years by playing AND losing two real games each year is just so frustrating. They get basically zero flack from anyone outside their own fanbase for not winning big games, yet somehow are in the Top 10 over the past few years. Falling into the Rose Bowl last year with Michigan and OSU into the playoffs as a prime example.
That's fine, I don't pay close attention to them either. But they are for some reason treated as a default top 10 team until they lose and, at times, we are in competition with them for recruits and NY6 bowl berths. So it does affect us.I wouldn't get upset over it. No one really pays attention to Penn State under Franklin. He has them a step below where Kelly had ND. So yeah, they avoid big OOC games, beat the teams they should, and lose to OSU and recently Michigan every year. But it seems to me like the level of attention they get is equal to that fact also. I haven't paid serious attention to Penn State since Paterno was there.
Penn State is - and will always be - the most irrelevant consistently good team in college football under Franklin.I wouldn't get upset over it. Is there no week whatever watch party thread?Man he is ass.
Weren't he and Klubnick the big time QBs in this recruiting class?Man he is ass.
Same. Beating James Franklin in a bowl would be about as good as beating an SEC team in a bowl. To do so in back to back seasons would be satisfying to my college football state of mind.Man i'd love to play PSU in a bowl game.
beating a lame duck PSU team not going to gain this team any prestige tbf.
Watch them lose to Maryland this weekendThey've won three NY6 bowls since 2017. ND hasn't won one in 30 years.
Say what you want about that program, or that coach in particular, but it would be a great matchup and would be a boost to the Freeman Era.

I could care less who we beat as long as we end the stupid NY6 streak, TBH.beating a lame duck PSU team not going to gain this team any prestige tbf.
Bingo. and if it happens to be a 10-2 Penn State team, that's awesome in the eyes of a lot of people and for me, beating James Franklin sends me into the New Year feeling really good about sports.I could care less who we beat as long as we end the stupid NY6 streak, TBH.
I enjoy looking forward to, and I'm with ya, but we must win out! Not just to get to NY6 game but this team IMO is way too good to go 10-2, let alone 9-3.Bingo. and if it happens to be a 10-2 Penn State team, that's awesome in the eyes of a lot of people and for me, beating James Franklin sends me into the New Year feeling really good about sports.
You may have higher expectations than most. But 11-2 was probably above median expectations coming into this year, even on this board. I didn't see a single national expert pick us to the CFP.I enjoy looking forward to, and I'm with ya, but we must win out! 11-2 NY6 bowl win would not be what I wanted or expected pre season, but would have the program on the right trajectory.
Yup depending on time of year the preseason O/U on wins was 7.5-8.5. As with many things, money talks and a lot of it wasn't coming in on the over. You may have higher expectations than most. Of course who knew that two of our three top 10 opponents were likely going to wind up unranked and that our toughest game would be Louisville. College football is weird.
