33 years olds. Fell in love in high school after the “bush push”

Some solid highs, but so many lows. You have to wonder. I think we’ve peaked. Admin doesn’t help the cause. Afraid we’ll never get over the hump.

Sucks.

Btw. Buddy of mine knows Rees well. I won’t get into everything, but he saw the writing on the wall last year. Getting a chance to work for Saban is huge, but there’s more to the story here.
Dude you can’t do that.

As in Freeman sucks and will fail? Or admin will never support coach?
Freeman. Have no idea on admin, but I think its pretty obvious football isn’t a top priority.

And maybe it’s sour grapes because they chose MF over Tommy, but it wasn’t all warm and fuzzy last year.

Also, how many staff members were rumored to have applied or tried getting out last year? Yeah most stayed, but if you’re new and you love how the program is going, you usually don’t hear people wanting to leave after a year….

Think about that.

There could be something else going on with him, but I just want to make it clear that Shaun says a bunch of stupid shit in a mysterious tone to sound smart and very rarely has any idea what he’s talking about.
The kid has a hammy issue. Those rarely just go away after a few days. Jaden Thomas was in the same boat and it was clear he aggravated his again last Saturday. Greathouse probably tried to go & then they saw he was struggling w/ the hamstring and limited him. Hopefully he‘s close to 100% after the bye week.

Get back to me when you’ve been through Faust, Davie & Willingham.

Like major red flags on MF?

Not surprising considering the O and D coaches basically hated each other during Kelly's last year.

He very well may be a fraud/figurehead. Kirby Smart has been mentioned a few times in terms of growing pains. And sure, his first year was rough. But year 2 he lost the natty in OT (on a prayer) and has been dominant since. Not only on the recruiting trail (I know I know it's not fair we can't go after those guys) but the way he fires his team up. Kirbys growing pains lasted 4 months, comparing MF to someone like Kirby as a DC is a horrible comparison let alone HC. Not only would Kirby not have lost Bowen or Keeley....he wouldn't have gotten choked out by a basketball school in Prime time.

So I went to dinner with a few buddies tonight. All SEC guys so we obviously talked football. Someone said something tonight that definitely made me pause....it was along the lines of "Sam Hartman isn't good, his best year at WF was 3 losses and every other year he lost 5 games. Sure, he threw for a zillion yards because they were always losing. You guys got caught up in his good looks and the fact he's played for 8 years, but forgot hes a marginal QB from Wake Forrest" Love it or hate it...not much to argue as it was a factual outside take. He threw for 300 yards once this year, I'm not saying bench the guy....but maybe we were a little too optimistic with him.
Patrick mahomes had a losing record in college with like 30 starts…. I can go on and on… qb is critical, but it doesn’t mean championships if you don’t still have good talent coaching and a D

I did, and he reminded me that if he was a better QB......he wouldn't have ended up with 1 P5 offer in Wake Forrest.
Go watch Jimmy Clausen’s 2009 season and ask yourself what ND’s record would be with a run game & an above avg defense. That’s what Hartman had to deal with for his time at Wake.

Even if MF proves to ultimately be a failure I still don’t mind the hire. The program was in a spot to take a shot on a potential superstar before he became one. He will recruit well enough so the next guy can hit the ground running.

Listen...I agree, I'm not trying to shit on Hartman...I'm saying ND Nation thought we were getting a baller. And midway through the season, everyone not rooting for ND sees what he is. I screamed "Heisman moment" when he ran for the 1st against Duke. I got laughed at, now a week later...things are a little clearer. I mean he didn't ball out against OSU, and if he doesn't rack up big numbers against USC or they lose. I don't see any real point in not having him split time the rest of the way.

He was not good vs OSU & Duke. He was bad vs UL. But…unless he’s injured (dude needs to put on some bulk if he wants any chance of playing at the next level)…you don’t remove him unless he completely implodes. That would send a horrible message to the team & a worse message to any future QB candidates in the portal.

I agree you can't remove him, as that would send a terrible message. But when donyounaccept the outback bowl and start prepping for next year?

Hartman is what he is. He's not especially big or athletic, he does not have a cannon for an arm. There are reasons he's generally not in the top 10 NFL prospects for the '24 quarterback class. He's not a Cam Newton, and expecting him to get us to the CFP on his own was always expecting too much.
But he's a very good, smart, experienced college quarterback who is a huge upgrade on what we had last year and probably just about anyone we've had since Jimmy Clausen. If we had a better interior OL and better WRs, he'd be fine.

I agree, the only thing is...I did think adding him alone was gonna put us in the playoff. I figured he was good enough that opponents couldn't pack the box against Estime. I was all in, even after OSU. Now the writing is on the wall, dude knew he'd have a bigger payday at ND than the NFL. I like him....but he isn't a transfer like Cam Newton or Burrow....and I thought he was.

Well that's where the WRs and the IOL come in. And the offensive coordinator. We can't give Hartman a clean pocket or guys to throw to who can get open. Parker is doing him no favors.
But I agree, going into and even after OSU I felt like we had more weapons than a defense can deal with. Then most of them vanished in a haze of eight-man boxes and stupid playcalls. I dunno. I still have hope that USC will fall down on D. But...

Doesn't help that Thomas and Greathouse both suffered hamstring injuries at probably the WORST possible time.

Both are back physically, but they are clearly not 100%.

I also don't understand what is happening with the IOL, really the line in total. They're getting worse, not better. And it's not just the uptick in competition, and it's not just the guards/centers. Alt and Fisher have played probably 3 of their worst games in their careers over the past 3 weeks.

Seriously, why can't we just go into a season with a perceived strength and just, for once, HAVE IT BE A FUCKING STRENGTH!?

He has 8 years HC experience, is on staff, coaching extremely well, and our admin is dirt cheap. If things go south quickly, I have to think our admin would give him a fair look. Look at our admins history if "continuity!".

Not saying I recommend it.

LOL at whoever the clown is who downvoted the question.

Think about that.
It's an interesting conversation to have, but I think this is revisionists history to paint the situation as a negative. The rumors of a number of staff being spoken to about other opportunities were ALL positions that were promotions. There was talk of NFL jobs and of position coaches interviewing for coordinator positions.

I don't doubt at all that the Tommy/Freeman relationship was very strained. I have been a part of business situations where two highly qualified, yet very different managers were up for the same promotion. No matter how that situation goes the person that doesn't get that promotion usually leaves within a couple years with very bitter feelings and tales of how the organization is going to fail. I wouldn't blame Tommy for feeling this same way.
