Targeting

Is there a way to find out if the refs were held accountable for their mistakes? Like the punt not being reviewable, and the questionable targeting call? I think there was a couple other obvious ones...

We have threads for everything else so why not this one too.

They have to fix this.

I realize that the refs are human and make mistakes but there have been some really egregious misses in the games I’ve seen this year including several that have been missed by ND‘s opponents. That miss on the hits to Devyn Ford is ridiculous.

I'd like to see them change the rules on penalty. Instead of one subjective mistake taking you out of a half, how about one warning and if a second, a full 4 quarters suspension.

I feel like 90% of the targeting calls, the player immediately realizes what he did and regrets it. Immediate and substantial punishiment for that player doesn't teach him a lesson IMO.

Luckily the Irish won, as the more Questionable Calls definitely favored the home team Duke! Actually, I'm surprised they didn't come up with some lame holding call by one of the linemen on Estime's TD run! Lame-ass bastards!

The review booth seems to have an insane amount of power over the outcome of the game and they are hardly consistent or even competent apparently.

I seem to recall watching a helmet to helmet hit by Duke the very next drive that was not called.

The issue is that by letter of the law you can basically call targeting on every play where the tackler has to lunge. Somehow, ND is always on the wrong side of the booth reviews (and many of the calls on the field). We have had players get knocked out cold with helmet-to-helmet shots with no flag. Meanwhile, our best pass rusher gets thrown out of the game for a low form tackle.

Whoever was in the booth that night had, at minimum, an axe to grind with ND. At worst, they were doing their best to throw the game to Duke.

I swear that half the reason they looked at the Botelho hit was because he looked hurt afterwards. Think it ended up being his arm but at first I thought he might have been woozy.

But they reviewed them. The human error was there but they slowed them down and still got them wrong.

Not exactly the same thing but did anyone see the Eagles yesterday when they ran their QB sneak mid-feild?

An offensive lineman for PHI was called for being offsides. His hand was basically touching the line scrimmage and when they showed the replay there were 2-3 defensive lineman whose hands were even further across the line but was not called.

Refs suck and will only look for one mishap, from the successors, to throw the flag at.

The targeting rule is completely ridiculous. If you're going to call a target for hitting someone on the hip, fine. Throw your little flag and give them 15 yards but stop ejecting players. The amount of hours these kids put in to play 12 games, maybe 40 reps a game, is hard to even comprehend. One fluke play and you take away two halves of football, in some instances over the course of two games, which is 8-16% of their season, however you want to look at it.

Change the rule to a simple 15 yarder unless their is intent to injure. Absent intent, there is no reason to punish the kid any further.

Given the amount of leverage the players have now and given how hard it is for staff's to deal with roster management and injuries, it's hard to believe they can't push back on this rule a bit.

There should at least be levels to targeting. Not every targeting foul should result in an ejection.

I'd like the rule changed. I think most people would. Idk how to write it but this has gotten silly

I also hate the rush push. Was happy when assisting the runner was a penalty.
They should change it so that you cannot assist the person the ball was snapped to. Fixes the QB sneak BS but doesn’t penalize normal stuff in the open field that was a gray area.

i'm actually shocked if they don't reverse the botelho call. They kinda brought it up in Freemans PC, but they didn't ask freeman if it was overturned.
Crazy bad if not.
