1) Imagine getting hazed just to play football at Northwestern, as if playing football there isn't hard enough.

2) Shocked to see this happen under Fitz.

3) Really interested to see how the school intends to prove Fitz knew about the stuff going on. If I am him, I'm getting a very expensive legal team. Not condoning or defending the hazing, just don't know what info the school has to prove the coach knew about the stuff.

Gave a quick glance at NW’s depth chart. I have no idea how these guys are playing these days but some previous ND interest in starting DT Najee Story who is now 6’4 280. Starting CB Theran Johnson. And, WR AJ Henning recently transferred there.

They must feel confident to let him go.

Him not knowing is really bad too. There’s no good answer from him.

Why is all the hazing so gay? Is that normal for hazing?
I have always wondered why "straight macho dudes" want to fucking get naked and touch or watch them.... big high school near me kids from a couple of years ago just got sentenced for burning freshman asses and sticking sparklers in their butts....wtf

Well that and because football locker rooms, like all hyper macho environments, can get incredibly homoerotic. But obviously there is a line, and dick jokes and even slapping asses are on one side of that line, and I think forcing players to strip naked and do naked activities with other naked players geared towards sexual humiliation are on another side of that line.
ACamp’s mom and I cross that line all the time…

Either he knew and was complicit or he didn't know and is therefore negligent.

For all the coach speak about how "the buck stops with me", it's pretty cut and dry.

I wonder how different this situation would have been if the players unionized a few years ago.

Maybe not at all but interesting to think about

So the case against him is 2 guys from 2008 and this one recent allegation of hazing? Next couple of days should be interesting to see if others come forward.

There is an unfortunate Great Ape holdover brain reaction that is simply desire-to-dominate. This is one of the central pieces of "natural crap" that we human males have in our limbic systems. (located as push buttons in the Hypothalamus for any neural anatomy nerds out there.) This is also a major reason why we've constructed better and better but never perfect cultures/societies so that everyone is not continually punching and killing one another (though we still have some "cultures" which display these lovable elements almost as an honor badge.) It is also why the better based religions are worth having around, while the overly dogmatic ones don't help so much. (Believe as I do, or I'll kill you.)

So, when uncultured uninhibited males are at loose ends, they tend towards being inhuman apes. Hopefully "BIGGER" more civilized and older partially-evolved humans-in-process are around to roar them into line, and maybe even slap them into line. In Fitzgerald's case, one hopes that this is a "normal" apish issue of what happens with morons when the Big Silverback is not on the scene. I say this because I had a higher opinion of Fitzgerald.

Desire-to-dominate is apish crud purely. But it is reached for a LOT in football (for obvious motivational reasons.) So we play with the apish fire, and count on somehow keeping it contained to just a few behaviors. (In 1960s football, it was a "secret" mantra that an opponent couldn't beat you if he was in the hospital.) In the silence of our minds, we know that this is going to fail a lot. We wink at this because we like football so much, just as we wink at life-shortening head injuries and criminality in athletes no longer "active." I once thought that most high school males should be required to spend at least two years in a boot camp style of training on the consequences of raging ego before being allowed back into "polite company" of high school and general culture. Obviously not practical.

Notre Dame can't completely solve such a basic human flaw, but at least a campus flooded with the concepts of the moral and spiritual will cut it down a bit. Frankly I'm stunned that we don't have more outbreaks like UGA all the time --- a tribute to local media and administrations having high alert news control most moments of the year. When I was at Iowa State for my Masters Degrees, we had a defensive tackle and wrestler who EVERY weekend would be at some bar deliberately trying to put people in the hospital by violent fighting. I thought "put a suit of armor on him and send him to Viet Nam." But we rather put a suit of armor on him and sent him to the line of scrimmage. .... and everybody stood and cheered. .... a hero.

Doesn't this stuff happen during fraternity rushes all of the time?
I was in a fraternity for a year in college. We got hazed, but nothing unacceptable, even by today's standards. They constantly sent us to the fridge for beer or across the street to the deli for a sandwich during the final minute of games on TV. We had one night, and one only, where they rubbed Vaseline in our hair (you just about cannot get it out), pulled our waistband out and dumped food down our pants, yelled at us like they were drill sergeants, and etc., but NEVER sexually or physically assaulted us, nor made us overdrink.

Maybe the worst thing was something I did to the next batch of pledges after my class. I had them come over one Sunday afternoon for a typical work detail: mow the grass, take out trash, etc., with their attendance required afterwards for a dinner I and a few others prepared. Corned beef, broccoli salad, baked beans, onion rings, pintos, boiled cabbage, and a couple of other REALLY gassy foods, all washed down by a couple of cases of Milwaukee's Best. Class attendance was mandatory the next day. We heard several stories from people we knew about how bad it was in class the next day. They were rather loud and uncontrolled gassy.

“There was a certain culture of enabling ... microaggressions that I had to experience,” the second player said.

We are doomed as a society that we take seriously the opinions of people who unironically use the term "microaggression."
That’s your takeaway from all this?

Seems like there’s a good number of people in America that are sadistic assholes, along with a good number that will go along to get along.

What the hell is with these Big Ten schools (Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern) and their weirdo sex abuse scandals?
It's really cold all winter and there's not much to do trapped inside. You can go crazy and kill your family then marry a scarecrow in Nebraska, ride the John Deere down to one of the 12,000 vibrating rubber dick stores in Wisconsin, or get real lonely in the ice fishing shed or hunting cabin and decide to try something different with your buddy if you live in the other upper midwestern states. Sort of The Shining meets B1G territory.
