Would you support a small golden Cross on ND's jerseys?

I was listening to IB over the weekend, and Sean, Jesse, and Vince were discussing updating the uniforms, particularly the road jerseys. They also discussed the new apparel deal as an opportunity to see what companies could do to freshen up the ND uniforms. While all three are utterly and completely wrong (you don't mess with perfection), would you support a very simple, modest golden Cross placed on the ND jersey? Unlike some "Christian" schools (TCU, for example), Notre Dame is very proud of its Christian bedrock and promotes its Catholic affiliation.

The golden Cross could be placed at the base of the collar (like they previously did with the Golden Dome, which looked great, see below, or the shamrock at the base of the collar which was meh), or on the shoulder like Nebraska and Florida does (see below). Just something very modest, but to make a point. I was going to suggest a Latin Cross, but a Celtic Cross would also look great.

What do you think? Yes? No?

I don't like the idea of tweaking the uniforms at all, but why would that be a "terrible idea?" It's very simple and modest.

No. I understand the impulse but don't think I would support it.

Yes it would make a point but it's not a point Notre Dame needs to make on its football uniform. Notre Dame's Catholicism is manifested in a thousand other ways by the daily life of the university. Football is not an inherently religious thing. Putting an explicit display of religiosity on our uniforms would alienate a lot of people. (One can debate whether those people should feel alienated by this simple act, or not, but many would. And to what end?)

I get what you're saying, but the football team attends mass prior to the game, the team's chaplain leads the team in prayer and is present on the sidelines, and you have Touchdown Jesus overlooking the stadium. Notre Dame's Catholicism is intertwined throughout, including its football program. But, again, I understand what you're saying, and it may be too polarizing.

I think it would be awesome and 95+ % of ND’s recruits are Christian. Would be a cool recruiting tool. Not that I’m in favor of exploiting faith for recruiting, but win win in my view.

The idea, at least to me, wouldn't be that it's really "exploiting faith." More that we are proud of and unapologetic of our Christian-Catholic faith. Not to turn this into a political post, but that would be refreshing to see in today's climate. But anyways, just an idea and something to discuss on a Monday.

There’s a pretty big distinction to be made between being “Christian” and being “Catholic”.

Everybody already knows that Notre Dame is the nation's leading Catholic university.
They also should know that you do not have to be a Catholic to play football at Notre Dame.
This is the kind of useless idea that redundant vice-presidents dream up in the endless hours of their post-functional years.
As a lifelong Catholic and 1962 ND graduate, I say: we're just about perfect as we are; quit screwing around.

ND's Catholicism is not necessarily a plus as many recruits are not Catholic. ND needs to not turn off recruits - ND already has so many hurdles to landing top recruits.. Many may be Christian but many Christians are leery of Catholicism and having a religious symbol on the uniform would only highlight these concerns.

You think the same university with a massive golden dome and mural of Jesus towering over the football field need a cross on their shirts to signal they are "unapologetic" about their faith?

I think you have a point. ND being a Catholic school has been swept under the rug for too long! Time to get serious about it!!!!!

They also show the team prayer on the jumbotron, they have a video inviting people to post-game mass played on the jumbotron. Just a weird suggestion that seems to think ND is (or should be) insecure in its "Catholic-ness."

Reading comprehension and apprehension really isn't your strong suit, is it?

Foremost, other than tweaking the color of the pants and using gold numbers (instead of navy) on the green jerseys, I'm not in favor of any stylistic changes to Notre Dame's uniforms at all. That's evidenced in my prior statements of: "While all three (in reference to the Irish Breakdown hosts) are utterly and completely wrong (you don't mess with perfection)" and "I don't like the idea of tweaking the uniforms at all." As mentioned, the topic just came up as they were discussing various changes to the uniforms on Irish Breakdown. If something had to be changed, I was merely thinking of something extremely minor, modest (unlike the gaudy Shamrock Series uniforms), and frankly, relevant to the University.
