Possible…. But there’s a lot of coaches that are better at say… coaching right now. hopefully freeman improves quickly. I do love that he seems to not have a big ego and is willing to improve/learn.

Freeman should be out recruiting or sitting with experienced HC’s learning instead of watching the Lacrosse team.

Here’s the thing — ND blew two incredibly easy games last year because of Rees and Pyne. Otherwise, they *drastically* overperformed their talent level. I don’t get the argument that from a “coaching” standpoint Freeman did anything clearly deficient last year.

It's hard to judge a team when the quarterback is a borderline power 5 player (and that's generous). The QB situation had nothing to do with Freeman. This year will be a good test though. No built in excuses.

Buchner was worse than pyne last year. Really not close. Marshall was Buchner. Freeman not getting a portal qb last year is on him too.

There’s a lot to like about him too, but we went 8-4 vs easiest schedule in awhile. Really only osu was more talented.

Not true, everyone could see we needed a portal qb before the season started, freeman decided not to. Yes Rees had input. Terrible obvious decision.

Sorry man. But you can't bemoan recruiting and transfer portal activity then say only OSU was more talented. USC and Clemson had more talent than ND, especially at the most critical positions.

Agree with you there but freeman couldn’t provide input or much input to Rees because he didn’t know how.

Again, portal qb is on freeman. Freeman saw the qbs in practice and accounts were they weren’t good. Pyne may have been better in practice but it was clear he had no upside. To not get a portal qb when a few solid ones wanted to come hurt.

Clemson was farrrrrrr less talented last year than people think. Recruiting rankings wise, yes better than us but not reality in college now. So many busts on that team.

Usc had more offensive skill talent but that’s it.

When you say most important position, clemsons qb room was as bad as ours last year.

Disagree strongly on Clemson. They were poorly coached, not less talented. DJ is and was significantly better than Pyne. Will Shipley was the best RB on the field. They had better Wrs too. Their DL was also better than NDs. The toughness and attitude was the difference in that game, along with Ben MO.

Add in USC getting Riley + occasional Clemson / FSU figuring it out and I think Kelly saw that he wouldn’t be able to just rattle off 10 wins on talent alone anymore. IMO Tougher scheduling had to be a key contributor in his move as Well as NIL.

As I see it the HC has three main responsibilities: leadership, talent assessment/development and game planning. MF is a better leader than BK. BK gets the edge on the other two for now. Freeman feels more hungry for success than BK and in the long run it will be the difference

Was great to see Freeman out there in Philly supporting the Lacrosse team. He’s a great ambassador for the university and the football program. He gets Notre Dame. I hope he’s here for a long time.

Winning is hard, as they say, and as we saw in the Marshall/Stanford games. Almost every team we play has good players, even if we have more better ones.
BK is a very good coach. He knows how to build/run a program that can consistently win the games it's supposed to win, because he's been doing it for 30 years. It would be a lot to expect Freeman to get there in Year One. But he has a lot of excellent qualities and he'll learn the program building/consistency part.

Then how did drew have a better season than dj in pretty much every single category if DJ is better and Clemson had better talent? Significantly better rating than DJ too. He did it with two less starts.

I’ll take estime over will. I wouldn’t have in high school though. Both really good. Definitely will over diggs.

Not to be obvious but he left in large part because LSU paid a bunch of money for him to leave. That is the leading reason. The rest of the reasons don’t matter if LSU didn’t pay close to $100 MM.

Would I rather have 10+ Win Kelly or a 9 Win Freeman? 10 wins gets you in discussions of CFP or NY6 Bowl. 9 wins gets you an okay bowl.

Winning matters more than likability. Freeman better get 10 win in regular season this year or next.

But he did win 10+ games and that is the standard of expectations assumed by Freeman. Many thought Kelly was actually holdin ND back. Now we all know otherwise. Freeman still needs to prove his Head Coaching chops and Kelly was amazing last year for LSU.

Production doesn't equal talent. I give Tommy shit and he deserves it some cases, but we was head and shoulders better than anything clemson had last year.

Estime fits ND better for what NDwants to do, but that doesn't mean Shipley is less talented.

Ngata was better than anything ND had last year on the outside.

Look, Clemson severely underachieved last year because Dabo made some really bad mistakes. I think they will be much better this year now that they have a real OC.

That's a joke. Kelly wasn't amazing. He was smoked by the top of the sport (UGA) just like when he was at ND. It's just that the top of the sport is no longer Bama.

When you present arguments this way, you come off as irrationally in love with Brian Kelly. Which is ironic because you are criticizing posters for doing the exact same thing with Freeman.

Many LSU fans were happy with last years results based on what he inherited. Conversely, we need to see if Freeman can prove he is an elite HC. I hope that happens.

Dj is a crazy overrated qb imo, and pyne is bad too but played better because ND had better talent. He had MM, he had the better line. He had more rbs. He was better because nds offense was overall slightly more talented.

I agree with you. By next seasons if Kelly doesn't do this, those LSU fans will have him walking the plank.

I think Kelly quipped he was the best ND HC that never won a National Title but really unfortunately for him its a much broader critique.... He is a very good coach that didn't win when it mattered most. That keeps him from being an Elite HC. He will need to do that in Baton Rouge.

That stated, this year will be exciting for MF and ND because if he can win 1 of those 3 games that will be okay and if he win 2 of those 3 games and let say goes 10-2 then MF will be much better regarded and that will help with recruiting and the program in general.

Kelly was really good at maximizing teams, having a "treat every game the same" plan to stay consistent in season, player development, building a consistent program in all phases, and assessing/hiring coaches that weren't his friends.

He was terrible at relating to top college athletes and recruiting them, getting teams ready to play a team better than them, prep for rain games, and hiring some friends that were terrible.
