These numbers are likely to go down in coming years as players continue to "transfer up" but in 2022 there were 20 FCS players taken in the NFL draft and another ~35 Group of Five players taken in the NFL draft.

Bottom line is that you could construct a roster full of 100% NFL caliber players simply by raiding the lower divisions of football.
No doubt about……there are plenty of late developers and under-recruited/under the radar prospects that don’t get the best offers out of high school.

I wonder if it is specifically a challenge for OLs where continuity is so important.

Maybe a guy who’s used to P5 level ball can jump to a bigger program and gel and succeed - like the guy from Virginia who went to Michigan last year - but jumping up a level AND blending with a new line might be too much.

I can’t remember which site’s podcast it was, but they rattled off a bunch of names of guys who transferred from FCS schools and played at P5 just last year, all who very successfully (some drafted). I remember them mentioning a FSU DL who led them in sacks who came from Albany & the WF DL who got drafted day 2, who came from Richmond.
Both those schools are in the same conference as Rhode Island.
That fsu kid played high school football 20 mins from me and NEVER heardof him in high school... didn't even start in high school but was given small offers based on his size and began to blossom at Albany and has cont to improve

It's not uncommon. My younger brother was a beanpole in high school (was a late birthday in his class) and topped out at 84-85 MPH on his fastball.

Went to college at a small school in New England, got on a college weightlifting program, added 20+ pounds of muscle, started regularly hitting low 90s, and transferred to D1 program. Wasn't good enough to make it to the big leagues, but certainly was more than capable of playing at the level where he ended up.

He’s not Diggs but solid depth piece. Got stuck behind some good PSU RBs.

Interesting a kid like him could go to a worse program and get significantly more carries. Maybe just worried ab the degree at this point and knows NFL is v unlikely. Mature decision if so.

Somewhat of a flop at Penn state. Highly rated guy coming out of HS that never produced. Good to have as a No.3 option.

just to calm everyone down before it the potential shit show starts on here by a few posters, Jadarian Price likely won’t be 100% by the time the season rolls around. ND needed another RB.

Watch Love come in and be a complete stud & Price will be awesome again, & this kid goes the way of Kaleb Smith & the RB from Stanford two years ago who transferred & retired….

Preferably a better scenario for the future of the RB room.

Could be a steal. May have some leadership skills and a new position coach may just be what he needed.

Ok. Harmless, in that case. He’s insurance for our two RBs with history of injuries and a true freshman. Good to have.

Devyn Ford…this is quietly a huge pickup for Notre Dame IMO!

With Diggs leaving, Notre Dame needed one more RB to provide depth. We know Estime is the man and going to carry the bulk of the load this year. Behind Estime is a bunch of talented guys, but each with a question mark. Will JD Price be 100% back from his Achilles? Jeremiyah Love is uber talented, but he is non-early enrollee freshman. Payne is an unknown commodity along with being a young player as well.

And given Ford’s experience I would imagine, I hope, he is reliable in pass protection. If he can pass protect sufficiently then maybe he becomes the 3rd down RB? Can’t rely on the 3 youngsters to be even average at pass protection at this point in time.

So considering no one knew Boyd was visiting and it flew under the radar anyone got any ideas on other possible targets I think we have 2 spots left

Good point. Younger players sometimes struggle with the pass protection, it's good to have a seasoned veteran to help back up Estime.

Strange factoid about Ford. He left the Penn St team after the fourth game but didn't enter the transfer portal until April 24th. Why would he wait?
