Did he really not thank god? If so more points as god doesn’t follow recruiting or twitter I reckon.

Had two Pac-12 offers, including Utah... that's a decent offer to see if you're taking a chance on a last-minute DB.

Was this part of the agreement to get him to ND or are we not going aggressive at the portal?
I’m sure he came with the idea that he’d eventually be on scholarship but also Notre Dame is allergic to going aggressive at the portal.

JD Bertrand was a really good football player and 1 time Georgia commit at a position we were fairly well stocked at. The optics of this are poor. Probably at the worst position group on the team and he's a stretch scholarship offer at best. I still think passing on Catalon could end up being a disastrous error in judgement.

I see this as all upside and no downside. The kid has even said publicly that if it doesn’t workout that at least he tried. He’s very well aware he’s up against the odds here but willing to give it a go. He’s also a legit 6’2-6’3 running sub 11’s for the last 3 years. Perfect flier to take

I'm all for the idea that O'Leary made a disastrous error in recruiting judgement, but ND doesn't really do a lot of the four-year scholarship commitment thing anymore - at least not in practice. If this ends up being a wasted scholarship, this staff doesn't seem afraid of having those discussions about their future on the team.

So, are we really going to act like O’Leary is making these calls on his own?

Freeman has got it so good. Nothing is his responsibility except when he wins.

I am going to act like O’Leary deserves to be held accountable for his position group when it’s the one that stands out from every other one with a returning coach as a clear issue, yes.

But sure, let’s put a pin in this for the next cycle. Hopefully Marcus will stop being a big meanie to his safeties coach and help him out by then.

You and I agree on quite a bit.

And, I'm not absolving O'Leary from responsibility here but this has been a problem for the 2 cycles before this as well.

I think there is a very, very small chance that O'Leary is making depth chart decisions over Freeman's and/or Bowden's heads.

Driskell spoke with Talich and has posted on the IB board that Talich will NOT be on scholarship.

I'll add. Most walk-ons will never earn a scholarship. But the ones that do, just in my opinion, should be the ones that busted ass and worked hard, showed that they can keep up, and be given scholarships as upperclassmen.

Will be on scholarship his freshman year.
It's early and I've only had one cup of coffee but so confused at this thread. Is what Mac wrote here a (perhaps sarcastic) prediction or a statement of fact?

As a walk-on this guy sounds great. As a scholarship freshman I'd agree it's fairly weak. Even if we are desperate. Go find a transfer with a couple seasons left on the clock and if this kid earns a scholarship in practice give him one next year.

It was Ryan Roberts, not Driskell.
And he said Talich isn’t on scholarship right now, but he expects him to be at some point.

This kid had multiple P5 offers and is more than just a walkon. He will have a chance to play at ND.

With the understanding he plays a different position, I get a little Kiser vibe from this kid.
