Sam Hartman is the leading TD passer in ACC history. He’s better than McCarthy right now and it’s not close
He has experience - that I give you. McCarthy's year last year was as good of a year that Hartman put up. ACC was weaker than B10 last year.

I think Hartman is good for ND this year but McCarthy put up a great season as a Sophomore...much better than Hartman did as a Sophomore.

He has more than experience.

What each did as a sophomore is irrelevant.

Here's what really happened.

The team screened the Carr highlights from Elite 11.

I don’t blame him for leaving. He needs live game reps badly and always has since his development in high school got sidetracked. At the same time, he’s going to get eaten alive at Bama and that would be a big mistake by him IMO.
Idk why people think he'd get eaten alive. He has started three games at ND. One on the road against a top 5 team. One in a letdown game where nobody played well. And a bowl game after a long layoff.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him go ball out.

I'm not a QB coach so take my perspective with a grain of salt, but to me, it looks like he is bad at throwing a football to people on his team.

I think Tyler Buchner seems like a great young man. And, I think in time he could still be quite the player.

But if the goal is to win a NC there is just no way you can say that you are realistically trying to do that with Tyler Buchner at QB.

He might be better than what Bama has presently, which I get. But this, IMO, would be a white flag for their 2023 season as it relates to Natty contention.

I agree, he will have athletes around him that he never had at ND. Not to mention a DEF that will have him playing with a lead the majority of the time. Ole Miss, Tenn and LSU will be the only games he may decide the outcome....and he will have 7 games under is belt before Tenn and LSU. TB could very easily go to Bama and go 11-1 before UGA spanks them in the SEC CG.

This is weird. I can't imagine a scenario where Buchner goes to Bama without knowing he's getting a starting role, and I can't imagine a scenario where Bama promises him that.

If Rees and Buchner light it up at Bama we'll know for sure that we're snakebitten, but put me in the "doubt" camp.

Well along those lines, he may not be transferring as a guaranteed starter at Bama, either. He may really like Tommy and Tommy may tell him come to Bama and compete in the fall for the starting job. I would be very surprised if he was given a starting position assurance.

Unfortunately some of what might be driving this is going to Bama and chasing a Natty, Facilities and Saban / Rees vs. ND.

Damn. I really like TB as an athlete and competitor. I wish him well wherever he ends up, he’s just not ready yet. I was hoping he’d get some reps and slow cook this year. I sure as shit don’t see him being the answer in Tuscaloosa.

McCarthy played most of the season against a joke of a schedule there’s aren’t 3 QB’s I’d rather have than Hartman
Beat PSU and OSU at the Shoe.

22 td vs 5 ints last year is pretty good year. I would take that for ND. Hartman is great. I am happy he is here. He does have a certain amount of Ints. Hopefully that goes down here.

Always entertaining! TB's spring game performance was one where he did seem preoccupied with something. Now we know. To be fair, it wasn't much different than his first few starts. The option to return is problematic from a qb leadership perspective. Hope MF put a deadline on it.

It was good to hear the earlier reports from spring that he was throwing it better, but the b&g game seemed to confirm what most already thought of him. Not accurate enough on the layups, can't read coverage and injury prone.

Here's where im at: does anyone feel like TB can lead a team to the playoffs or even win a game in it? If the answer is no, thank him for his efforts and wish him the best. I don't think he's capable of that consistency on a team that requires a heisman caliber qb play to be championship level.

I don't think people realize that Bama doesn't have the skill players like they had a few years ago. Definitely one of the reasons Young didn't look as good this year at QB vs. prior year.

TB would have to play Texas in the first couple of weeks and that could easily be a L.

It will help that Styles and Lenzy won't be there, not to mention Burton and Brooks are big upgrades.

I’d be surprised because:

—He has shown very limited composure in the pocket and has proven to be a good (not great IMO) runner that won’t be able to run his way out of trouble in the pocket against their competition. He was seeing ghosts vs Marshall for christ’s sake and making horrible reads before the snap let alone after it. He needs serious development and while I think Rees is a great play caller, he has a poor track record with developing QBs.

—He has been very mistake prone in his limited opportunities and even if he manages to win the job, Saban isn’t going to give someone a long leash (Barnett)

—The QB room at Bama is green but talented and I do not think he is winning that job. His best quality right now is his running ability and it doesn’t really set him apart in that QB room. His body is going to hold up if asked to run it 10+ times a game which is probably the only way he’s having any success there

—I’m going to come across like a dick here but I question his mental toughness and that’s just not going to work there. He’s going to a place where there is 0 patience for that.

No idea if he's capable of it but one of the best ways to improve consistency is to play. If he hadn't gotten hurt, might have been a very different player by the end of the season.

Oh well, I hope he stays.

I hear ya, but every player on that roster is part of the #1 or #2 recruiting class over the last 5 years (3 classes were #1, 2 were #2) the skill players are absolutely there and we will see it soon. Are they gonna end up world beaters like DeVonta Smith, Cooper, Ridley, Jeudy, Julio, Metchie and Waddle.....who knows, maybe.

Say what you want we better hope Hartman doesn’t get hurt. And 2024 right now is in some serious trouble. This portal is a cluster fuck.

Steve Angeli has 0 game experience. And our next option is a true freshman.

The Bama boards are hilarious right now:

This board justified the Rees hire by saying Buchner was the reason their offense sucked. Now we are looking at bringing him in? Does not compute.

Leave it to Bama fans to think TB was the reason the offense sucked in 12 games last year...ROFL

Buchner never played enough to be the reason our offense sucked!

You would think Bama would go after Hartman. Maybe they had a run and he wasn’t interested.

This is a blessing for him and ND. Seems like a nice kid, but he is dead weight at this point. He was going to get passed by one of three underclassmen next year. He is just not a Power 5 QB. Best of luck to him!
