Clearly my opinion wasn't a popular one, I went based on watching them in the tournament. And obviously that's a very small sample size and probably not the whole philosophy of the offense he ran. But my "clueless" opinion still was after watching them play two full games, and I didn't come away wowed at his system and think to myself, "this guy is it".

But clearly I could be wrong and he could be a great coach, because you guys are seeing something different than I did.

He runs a motion offense, which is a pretty free-flowing, player driven style of offense. It's less scripted and lets players decide how to screen or cut to get open. It has it's pros and cons, but look back to the 2015 and 2016 teams to see poetry in motion (pun intended). You can certainly run pre-sets to get the motion started but in general, it's a flowing style of offense, unlike the Princeton offense or other styles that are more deliberate and scripted with their passes/screens/cuts.

It really helps a motion offense when you have a competent big and you can run it inside and out (see Zach Auguste/Josh Atkinson as recent examples, or Torin Francis from the early 2000s). When you are basically running a 5-out, all perimeter player offense like we had to this year, it's really tough to be creative and you're too reliant on the three, like we were all year.

Similar to Mark Dantonio at Sparty, I think a guy gets a lot of rope when they ascend a program to unforeseen heights, but at some point you have to hold a guy responsible for burning it down to the ground, even if it was his own creation.

I would tend to agree with the first two paragraphs. I would also add that part of the reason for additional optimism was the upgraded facilities. We had routinely heard how our basketball facilities were extremely lacking and were holding the program back. It looked like everything was potentially in place to take the program even higher. Instead it tanked.

Richey inherited a pretty solid program from Niko Medved, who actually did the hard work in turning Furman around from a doormat in their own conference to winning the conference regular season championship in 4 years, and has done much the same at Colorado State, taking them from doormat to an NCAA birth in 4 years before a backslide this year.

lol I know. The point is just he is their best player so he has the ball in his hands, a lot, as he should.

The new headliner of the carousel is Penn State's Micah Shrewsberry, and he holds the keys to the next phase of the coaching cycle.

After guiding the Nittany Lions to the NCAA tournament and a first-round win over Texas A&M, he emerged as a target at Notre Dame and Georgetown. When Providence's Ed Cooley took Georgetown on Monday, he also became an option for the Friars.

The latest buzz is that it's more likely he's choosing between two options: a move to Notre Dame or remaining at Penn State. The Nittany Lions have been in contract negotiations with Shrewsberry for the last couple of months, but his price, and leverage, have undoubtedly increased after the late-season surge.

Word is he's expected to decide in the next 36 hours or so.

Surely any coach at NDs kids would choose attending and playing at ND over any other institution…

Agreed. Though I think his age would give him a slight bump for me as well. I said I'd be happy with both but I'd give Shrewsberry a slight edge. And, quite honestly, if ND is able to pull this off. It's about as close to a homerun hire as the basketball program is going to get, IMO.

So based on the ESPN report its Shrewberry's job if he wants it. McDermott would be the next move if Shrewsberry decides to stay at Penn St. I hope we have a third option ready and willing.

That's a very good choice, I don't know why he hasn't been pursued. The same is true of Kelsey and DeVries. I do think that Shrewsberry being from Indiana and having coaching experience at the P5 and NBA level is a plus. And PSU hasn't won a tourney game since 2001, and has only been in the tourney twice or something in that time period, so he overall record there has to be considered in that light.

I’m taking it that if they have got to this point with MS, it will be him. Maybe it depends on if his son took a foreign language….

PSU’s 247 site thinks this is all but done and he’s going to ND. They had the flight trackers out.

There was a chartered flight from South Bend to Pittsburgh yesterday morning that returned to South Bend yesterday afternoon around 7pm. Shrews canceled all his previously scheduled player meetings yesterday & drove to wherever his interview occurred. He was MIA from the PSU AD all day. He returned home last night & kept the communication lines shut off.

Jim Rohr, the retired CEO of PNC Bank, is NDs top athletic booster (the AD position is named after him), on their BOT, and still lives in Pittsburgh. We’ve heard whispers he was closely involved in brokering the meeting w Shrews. I can’t say that Rohr arranged it for a fact…but it’s a high probability. I also dont know exactly where the meeting took place. Our best guess is Laurel Valley…where Rohr is a member & has hosted multiple ND events in the past.
