It's hard to get out of poverty in general. You have to make a lot of good choices and there isn't a large margin for error. Education would seem to be the key, but If you don't have anyone to help guide you, you either make dumb choices or you don't even try because the obstacle seems impossible to overcome.
While it is hard to get out of poverty, it's not hard in the same way that making it to the NFL or becoming an astronaut is hard. It's hard work, but it's straightforward and simple. Any US or Canadian citizen with reasonable mental and physical health can climb out of poverty. There are a few basic, tried-and-true rules that, if followed, all but guarantee escaping poverty.
1. Get an education.
2. Treat every job as an opportunity to improve your work skills and employee reputation.
3. Don't start a family until you can support a family.
4. Don't engage in criminal activity and don't associate with those who do.
5. Consistently put long-term reward ahead of immediate gratification.
Do those things and your odds of living in poverty drop to virtually nothing. There are more opportunities to climb out of poverty than ever before with the Internet and the opportunities it provides for distance work & education, as well as e-commerce.
