Why all of a sudden is Oklahoma the place to be??

When they get to the SEC and when Saban, Smart, and Kelly have them kicked to the ground, I hope they keep kicking.

Venables reminds me of Jimbo Fisher, both smug type of coaches.

I don’t get that vibe from Venables, at all. He may not be a great head coach in the end…but I’m not sure he’s on Jimbo’s level.

He's pretty active on twitter about coaching his guys at ND. I love him. Probably one of my favorite position coaches I can remember.

Seems like an outstanding person, and an absolute hype man. I wish he could stay at ND for years.

Just to add on, he's told at least 5 teams he won't be returning to the NFL.
Thought I read somewhere that after watching Eric Bienemy get passed over for so many NFL HC jobs he basically decided his best chance to lead a team was in college. So he went back to IU, and then ND.

But to be a head coach he’ll need to be an OC somewhere first, and if it wasn’t ND this year it’ll be someplace else before long. Enjoy him while we’ve got him because he’s a good one.

Still a mystery to me that he’s at ND and his kids aren’t

It's really not. If they weren't enrolled in the right FYS classes an undergrad transfer would be difficult to impossible. And doubt admissions cares that he is on staff.

His best bet to become a HC would be if Freeman added AHC to his title. He's seen how Andy Reid runs a NFL team, and has a good understanding of the current college landscape with recruiting & NIL, but he needs to sit at the same table as Freeman when it comes to most of the operations behind the scenes. He needs to be shown the business side of the game.

I'm not sure how much of an X's & O's guy McCullough is, but I feel he is much more of a motivator and leader than he his an offensive tactician. Those types of coaches can make excellent head coaches, when given the chance. Although, he would need to nail his coordinator hires.

All true. Just it's pretty rare for someone to get, or succeed at, a head coach job that's worth having without spending some time as a coordinator first (there are exceptions like Dabo Swinney of course). But the game is changing and DMC does seem to have the leadership traits it would take to pull that off. Him staying with Notre Dame as an AHC/RB coach for a few years would be great. Hopefully that's the plan.

Depends what kind of job he wants. Denson went from ND RB coach to HC at Charleston Southern. PJ Fleck got the WMU HC job without ever being an OC. Urban Meyer, never an OC. These are obviously exceptions and not the rule, but McCullough can make this jump if he wants to, albeit it's going to be to a G5 program most likely where it is tough to win like Charleston Southern, WMU and where Bowling Green was at when Meyer took that job.

If his intent is to be an HC, he's probably got to stay in college and Eric Bienemy is exhibit A as to why. Maybe he thinks he can make more of an impact with college kids. Considering the current landscape and where it's going, most guys are doing the opposite and want to get into the NFL to avoid recruiting, NIL, The portal, etc. I just hope he doesn't suffer the same college fate that Tony Alford has. Alford has had multiple cracks at the Colorado State job, his alma mater, that he covets and hasn't gotten it. He has the AHC title and has never been an OC.

Maybe the difference between Alford and McCullough will be that his alma mater, Miami OH, may be a bit more desperate than CSU...

There is a tie for longest tenured MAC HC right now: Chris Creighton at Eastern Michigan AND....

The one and only Chuck Martin of Miami OH. Both hired in 2014.

Other than McCullough's one year at USC, he's been pretty centered in the Midwest. A MAC job might well be his best bet, but he's probably taking a pay cut and would be getting a job that would be difficult as most of those are.

If he can navigate the portal well enough he could have a shot.
