It’s possible to blame them both. Many of us don’t idolize Brian Kelly. This is still a reasonable perspective even as admin has completely exposed itself to the larger public for its longstanding ineptitude.

Admin kept Kelly when a lot of us fans wanted him gone for a wretched season. You always conveniently leave this part of the narrative out. Let me repeat: it’s possible to appreciate the good things Kelly did AND criticize the bad things he did. Kelly doesn’t need this weird respect fetish to reestablish his value in ND lore. Admin further exposing itself for what it’s always been doesn’t patch up the other reasons why it was time for Kelly to go.
Understood your point. 2016 was a bad year for Kelly and he certainly could have been fired. But thankfully they didn’t as JS respected Kelly and he had three great seasons thereafter.

Not sure what Watt would be a bad higher? It has been said from current and previous players that Watt would help train them in the offseason. Hes been with the guys for a few years now and know the brand.
Say Watt again! I dare ya. I double dare ya.

Dude, what are you talking about? The topic was the 2014 defense. It had nothing to do with this year's offense.

And Day was drafted in the 4th round. Rochell was drafted in the 7th. And my point was they made NFL rosters or were close. Making a roster is more important than getting drafted. I didn't even mention Trumbetti who made Green Bay's practice squad or Tranquil who was a sophomore and wasn't a big part of the defense yet - but still showed talent. The overall point was that defense had a lot of talent beyond Jaylon.
Dude, you're coming into the conversation after it was already started.

I made the comment that it would take a BVG blunder of a coach to screw up this offense next year, referring to how experienced and talented it was. Then someone shifted the argument into BVG having tons of talent to work with too which is debatable. Yeah, a lot of those guys made teams after going undrafted or going late, but many ended up as practice squad or on the bench with the exception of Jaylon and Romeo seeing notable field time. At the very least I'm guessing Alt, Fisher, and Estime see significant playing time at the next level and we could see others like Raridon, probably one of the interior linemen, and who knows what could happen to the receivers with Hartman throwing to them. I expect Hartman's stock doesn't rise considerably much despite shifting systems.

Thank you for your email. To paraphrase the character Terence Mann played by James Earl Jones in one of my favorite movies, Field of Dreams, we admire your passion … misdirected though it might be, it is still a passion. And your passion and that of our other fans is among Notre Dame’s most valuable resources.

In this case, the passion is, however, misdirected because it springs from a fundamental misunderstanding. During our discussion with a candidate for our offensive coordinator position a national reporter accurately noted that the candidate’s buyout in his current contract was an “obstacle.” Without seeking any clarification from us, some of the individuals who comment on Notre Dame Football concluded that this meant that Notre Dame was unwilling to pay the buyout. That is not and never was the case. As a policy matter, we do not discuss the details of personnel matters but given the extraordinary reaction by you and others in this instance I am comfortable sharing that while, prior to this week, our discussions with candidates never reached the point where we extended a formal offer, we communicated clearly in each and every instance that any offer we made would include our funding of their buyout with their current institution. To the extent the buyout was an “obstacle” in the case of one candidate, that was true of a brief period of time only because of conflicting information that had been provided to us regarding the amount and mechanics of the buyout. However, it was an obstacle we knew could be quickly resolved.

In correcting the record in this instance, I also want to be clear that Notre Dame will never apologize for being a good steward of the resources provided to us by our fans and partners. Our focus is not matching the expenditures made by our competitors; it is making investments calculated to advance us toward our goals of 1) promoting the University of Notre Dame, 2) providing an unrivaled educational experience for our student-athletes, and 3) winning a national championship in football. That is why for the past decade our investment in the coach-educators who comprise our assistant coaching staff in football has always placed us among the top-10 nationally and that will continue to be the case as we support Coach Freeman in his hiring of a staff that meets the exacting criteria he articulated for me when this hiring cycle began.

Finally, given your strong interest in Notre Dame having the resources it needs to compete effectively with the most successful athletic programs in the country, I encourage you to become a member of Notre Dame’s Rockne Athletics Fund (Rockne Athletics Fund) Through this giving society our fans, family, and alumni provide the resources that are critical to our ability to meet our commitment to provide our student-athletes with the best academic, athletic and student experience in college athletics. If you are already a contributor to the Rockne Athletics Fund, on behalf of our student-athletes I thank you for your support.

IF all of that is true, it still would come back to the fact that it was a horrendous choice to take Ludwig to the hockey game and the implication that this was a done deal.

Let’s say Jack is telling the truth, it is still really just a masterclass by Utah. They have Ludwig sign an extremely prohibitive contract and then someone from their camp probably told Thamel that ND didn’t sign off instantly on paying it. At that point Thamel’s sends out a sparse but accurate tweet. Then it really doesn’t matter if Jack is right, it’s already settled in public opinion. There is no coming back.

Even if Jack is telling the truth, he really only had one swing at this and missed. Gotta know who you’re across the table from.

If no formal offer was extended (or even an informal offer) then why was Ludwig at the hockey game with Freeman? And put up on the Jumbotron (not Ludwig specifically, but Freeman obviously).

Did they not check out the buyout info or whatever before extending even an informal offer? Often an agreement is reached first of all and the formal contract comes later.

It’s just an out. Nobody who ever doesn’t end up doing the job ever gets a formal offer. Klein didn’t get a formal offer. Grubb didn’t get a formal offer from Alabama etc. All these guys are just flying around and getting courted but when it’s a no or falls through, it was never a “formal” offer.

My Alma Mater contribution is not coming this year after this. The guy literally has the gall to ask for more money! Not to sound like an ass but SEVEN people from my family have went to this school and this is there response! Not looking for any special treatment but cmon your university literally sends some to take us out to dinner and ask about our season ticket re-up and ask for contributions yearly! I want to scream!

What typical spin control. If resources are not an issue then why is Ludwig not the OC?? Why is Parker the cheap internal hire the OC? Why not continue the national search?

We know the answer.

Btw, I am sure Saban and Bama’s reinvestment into the Football program has not been done with “Good Stewardship” of that university’s assets.

Meanwhile he takes our OC on an Alabama Jet at South Bend’s airport and ND fucks up its hiring and retreats to hiring from within.

Hiutzpah!

Thanks for posting this. His answer is quite revealing and very interesting at the same time. He listed three things that their investment in athletics are geared toward generating, and I'm sure that it was in order of importance. Promoting Notre Dame over winning a national championship. The educational experience rated behind promoting the university.

And then, he has the grapefruits to ask for a donation. Talk about cognitive dissonance.

Jack Swarbrick must be a long lost sibling of Jerry Jones.

Yep, these days a formal offer is a written offer and it would generally not go out unless it is expected to be accepted (or that has been my experience).

Yes, this is exactly the right take. Once you bring Ludwig on campus and parade him around for all to see with the goal to hire him as ND's next OC, then you better have all of your ducks in a row and be fully prepared to make that deal. All "obstacles" should have been known beforehand. And since you (JS) are also admitting you were willing to pay that obstacle anyway, what you don't do is let Ludwig get on a plane without getting the deal done and having him sign a contract. As soon as you let him get on that plane without a signed deal then you shouldn't be too surprised when you end up with egg all over your face for botching something that top-tier teams don't botch.

It was a formal offer. JS is trying to use semantics to rationalize that it wasn't since, obviously, nothing was ever signed, but you don't get to the buyout stage of the negotiations unless you already have an agreement with Lugwig that would include his yearly pay and duration of terms and Ludwig agreeing to those terms. And once JS admits ND was eventually willing to pay the buyout, they wouldn't have been willing to do that if they weren't ready to finalize a deal.

Bottom line is, if the buyout had never been an obstacle in any way, a deal would have been made and Ludwig would have had a signed contract before he got on a plane.
