I’m not sure I’d call Kelly an “offensive guru”. The offense was usually the weaker/less consistent side of the ball during his time at ND.

True. But Burnt Ends was known for his offense and offensive acumen prior to ND

MF was a defensive coordinator for a few years. Now he’s a head coach and has let his offense be run by guys with not a distinct amount of time running offenses more than any of us.

We all like the latest sexy coordinator but this is MFs career and he has some skin in the game here. He knows what Gerard is capable of and seems he will ride or die with the guy. High probability that this years offense is the best since Brady Quinn’s first year with a better run game. I’m glad Tommy is gone but not Harry. With that said we will have a highly motivated group of coaches with the best jobs they have ever had and are willing to give 110% except Golden. I’m willing to bet our offense will be the best one in recent memory and will validate those of us dying to see wunderkin Tommy move on.

Kelly underachieved on offense and in his QB development. He excelled at taking third string players and making them an adequate starter (Rees, Kizer and Book). Thought he was coming in to run a high powered up tempo spread offense and it never showed up. Good coach and CEO but not enough of a motivator or recruiter.

Yeah, that reeks of a spin job.

There's zero reason for any party to have it out that ND refused to pay the buyout.

Utah would want it known their guy turned ND down.

ND would want it known they tried to pursue them and ultimately he chose to stay.

There's way too much out there pointing to incompetence/unwillingness from ND's administration for it to simply be Ludwig bailed.

All those guys went undrafted and were later picked up as free agents, with the exception of Day who was a Round 4, and Rochelle who was a late 7th and perennial practice squad guy. Romeo is probably the only one to really make his mark in that list.

This starting offense is loaded with more talent than those guys. Alt, Fisher, Estime will all likely be drafted well and will have a decent chance to see meaningful playing time. Not sure he won't still be an UDFA but Hartman is likely to increase his stock a little, and the WR group will all benefit although it's anyone's guess who will shine. Raridon is a star in the making at TE, it's very likely he'll breakout with Mayer gone once he's healthy. There's a chance Diggs and some of the interior line will get picked in later rounds too. I'm not saying all these guys are getting drafted, but in comparison it really feels like no contest.

That is not what the article said. She glossed over the details, and by doing that it sort of sounds like ND didn't screw up as much as we thought, but yes, they still did. All you have to do is re-read the article and you can see the key details.

The article states that the buyout was an initial sticking point and ND let Andy Ludwig get on a plane thinking it was a deal-breaker. That means that Ludwig got on the plane thinking the deal had fallen through, so all he had to do during his flight back was make peace with the idea that he would be going back to Utah to remain their coach. By the time ND was able to tell him they were willing to pay the buyout he had already made up his mind he was staying and it's hard to blame him at that point. It's also likely that by the time ND got back to him he already had time to see the whole ordeal blow up nationally and it's very possible that also played a role in why he said no.

This means that it's obvious if ND hadn't screwed up in the first place by playing hardball or suffering from sticker shock, or whatever you want to call it, and simply agreed to the buyout right away - something they eventually did anyway - they would have had a deal in place before Ludwig ever got on a plane. And by the time Ludwig ever got on any plane, it would have been after ND had made sure he had signed his deal and was simply going home to get ready to make the move from Utah to SB. That obvious scenario didn't happen because ND screwed up.

So all the things we thought before this article are still true.

Dude, what are you talking about? The topic was the 2014 defense. It had nothing to do with this year's offense.

And Day was drafted in the 4th round. Rochell was drafted in the 7th. And my point was they made NFL rosters or were close. Making a roster is more important than getting drafted. I didn't even mention Trumbetti who made Green Bay's practice squad or Tranquil who was a sophomore and wasn't a big part of the defense yet - but still showed talent. The overall point was that defense had a lot of talent beyond Jaylon.

Swarbrick, the low dog, needs to do some media and clear up who is responsible here - either him and those above him for not paying the "buy out" or else they were prepared to pay it and Ludwig said no which means it is kind of Freeman's fault essentially for not selling the program.
