Noticed that back in October IRISH1 wrote that he read ND VS The Klan.
Sidenote to that: My Dad was at ND when the Klan announced that they would march in South Bend.
He was a bit of an Old School Man's Man --- elite intellectual but a brawler beneath the skin.
He and Notre Dame friends stationed themselves in SB alleys during that march.
They spent a long day doing unchristian actions upon KKK members.
They'd haul them off the straggling lines and ... well ... not pretty things happened.
Dad was a great Catholic father, but he believed that you did NOT trespass a person's house,
nor lay down a gauntlet and not expect to be challenged. He never showed any remorse for beating
the wadden out of those guys. ... not recommending his behavior, just reporting the inside history.

Finished the first book of Game of Thrones. On to the second one now.

I watched the show first then wanted to read cause I’m not much of an imaginary person so it’s hard for me to imagine what characters look like and stuff. Watching the show helped me understand the book better. And I really enjoy reading it.

It was the first time I read a book since high school which was 15 years ago

I'm reading The Lord's Of Finance by Liaquat Ahamed. It's really good history, basically looks at the financial system from WW1 to the depression and shows how the decisions the countries/banks made caused the Depression.

If you are a big fan, this is probably stuff you already know and could be a refresher.

Essentially, Pearl Jam doesn't exist if Andrew Wood doesn't overdose and Mother Love Bone doesn't break up. Eddie Vedder took in advice from Pete Townsend, Bob Dylan, Neal Young and Bruce Springsteen rather than try heroin. "Make good choices."

Just started this one.

Reading Rick Atkinson’s Liberation Trilogy. Finished the first volume, An Army at Dawn. Got the second volume, The Day of Battle, for Christmas and am well into it. These remind me a lot of Cornelius Ryan’s WW2 trilogy, which were excellent.

I just finished "Where Men Win Glory" by Jon Krakauer, easily one of the best books I've ever read. It's a biography about Pat Tilman, so well written. Both a phenomenal and troubling read.
It's excellent. A lot of different groups try to use Tillman as a talisman for their own causes and ideologies, but the more you know about Pat Tillman, the more you know that nobody can really "claim" him as some kind of mascot or symbol. The guy was really one of a kind. Where Men Find Glory is one of my favorite books ever.

Krakauer also wrote Into the Wild. There is an entire chapter in the Pearl Jam book I just finished about how Krakauer and Sean Penn did the movie with Eddie Vedder in mind. They wanted Emilie Hersch for the lead because he looked like a young Vedder at the time. They screened the movie for Vedder and he connected with it so much that he finished the soundtrack in two weeks he was so deep into it.

Krakauer is one of the best. Hoping to get into more of his stuff.

He really is an amazing writer. His research is impeccable. I totally agree on Tilman, he was a fascinating human based on the book; he didn't want any publicity from his decision to leave the Cardinals to pursue the Army, he just did what felt right. Challenged people's ideologies and was always questionable of passed on information, but did so respectfully and out of curiosity, which is a rare talent. A "dumb jock" he certainly was not.

I have "Into the Wild" on the shelf and it shot up my list after reading that book; I can't wait to read it. You're one of many who told me it's a great read, looking forward to it.

Maybe an "Into the Wild" spoiler below?

One of the most sad/disappointing things about "Into the Wild" was the protagonist had so many chances to honor his internal drive while still equipping himself with the necessary tools. It was sad for so many reasons but the biggest reason to me was the naiveté he carried with him into harsh conditions.

I wasn't motivated or moved by the purity of his intentions like so many others, I was just left disappointed that a young life ended because it wasn't well prepared for the task it took on in pursuit of ultimate freedom.

I have been working through Shelby Foote’s history for years now (It’s excellent but DENSE) and also have read recently the Jeff Shaara Western books, Blaze of Glory and Chain of Thunder. I read the main trilogy with his father years back. I also read Sea of Gray about the Confederate navy. I’d recommend all of it.

Foote is the civil war king for pure history. Very detailed without revisionist angles, just a pure view of everything kind of from the stance of how they viewed themselves and their collective causes.

Sharra is the king of the historical fiction for all things CW. Known for being historically accurate while basically telling it in novel form. Gettysburg and Gods and Generals are his ( and his father who started it)

He came across as a total chooch on the Netflix series and likely is, but this book was not what I expected at all. I think he has some very valid points to make about how the current generation of youngsters can use some tough love, and actually WANT it.

His back story is pretty crazy.

Zekhan is an interesting cat. I’ve heard interviews with him and his points & predictions are really compelling. Have you finished his book yet?

I'm about 3/4 through it, I ended up knocking out the 3rd Reece book in between. I heard him on a couple podcasts and he covers a lot of the same ground he does on like the Joe Rogan podcast but I think his arguments are compelling as well. I don't think a single time I've had to stop because he said anything absurd. And it's written really casually so it's a surprisingly fun read.

I would give it a hearty recommendation especially if you found yourself vibing to Guns, Germs and Steel, and The World is Flat years ago.

Never knew Mother Love Bone had direct PJ ties,… makes sense tho.
I remember when they released a double CD album after Andrew’s dead around the time “Singles” the movie came out. “Stardog Champion” & “Chloe” immediately jumped out.

The chapter about Kyler Murray was fascinating.

It still boggles the mind that Warren Moon lost six years playing in Canada off of his NFL stats because the consensus was he had to change positions.
