Nobody is going to say the kid isn’t a competitor and played his balls off…But his balls were good enough to complete a comeback win against the #19 team in America without about 25% of their roster in a game where he threw two pick sixes.

We need a QB to win in the playoffs, not eke out a win in the Toyota Gator Bowl.
Can't blame a kid for running the plays that are called to him from the - so-called - OC.....

Accounted for 5 TDs....kid has that dawg in him
First game back. Very limited experience to begin with. On the ground that many times first game back against a hot SEC school.

Good enough to win playoffs? Hell no

Impressive fucking effort? Hell ya

Polish that up, get into rhythm. His ceiling is still high. He ain't done yet. (But maybe on a one year pause)

My only take away is that the defense actually played quite well in the second half

And

I sincerely hope we see a decent amount of Buchner formations next year because I think he just needs more football. Guy is a playmaker, for great or for terrible.
Hope you took away more than that.

Why do we have to wait until bowl games to run fake plays? I thought the fake punt was well designed and Lenzy easily picked up the first down. Would have loved to see his speed used more during his career on similar plays.
I think the other side of that coin is that it worked because we hadn’t shown that wrinkle. I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but the lack of film on that fake is what allows it to work.

Because it was a bad read. Even if that was his first option. He didn't see the defender standing right there in his passing window.
Which one? the 100yd - 6 was a 2/3 second play to his receiver.... the other one, yes... I can see making another decision

Really happy for Lenzy to be going out with that game.
Rees can be so OK, then great, then WTF…
That last TD was beautiful though.
It reminded me of the Alize Mack TD vs Stanford a couple years back @ ND

The long SC pass TD was not a TD. Toe was on the line.
2 INT TDs and a fake punt TD. 4 TDs that really shouldn’t happen.
Good game.

---- tipped... stupid playcall... how is that on 12???
Idk man, maybe bc the ball was propelled forward from his arm? That ball wasn’t going to be a completion anyway, and might’ve been picked by the same defender who intercepted it off the tip. The ball would’ve been well behind Diggs.

I get it, you hate Rees. He had a few calls today that warranted criticism, but TB threw the football. On the 100 yard INT return, TB made the poor throw. You can’t lay it all on Rees.

I don't hate anyone... hating someone's decisions is different. I'm laying ALL the fault on Rees' decision to pass when a team that has been running consistently against a team then, gets 5 yards from the goal-line on 1st or 2nd down and runs a passing play..... if I remember right, a Super Bowl was lost by the same decision - circa Seahawks vs Patriots

The other thing is I hope TB12 sticks around. He has a perfect opportunity to learn from a veteran while crafting his game for another year. He then will have a year or two to start and finish up his attempt to make the league. Either or, I think he is used next year as a Taysum Hill type player in certain games if he sticks around. He’s too quick to not include.

The seniors that came back for a 5th or didn’t transfer out should be crowned
ND Men. They kept this program together and setting us back 2-3 years.

So-called what now? Tommy just called a great game with moderate execution.

Imagine if Buchner actually hit the screen passes that were wide open? Or if he didn't airmail 3 passes in the first quarter? or if he actually waited .5 seconds longer on that 2nd pick six? And I still think Buchner showed improvement, despite a few poor decisions or balls with lack of touch. Then factor in Merriweather looking completely out of sync on his 1-2 targets.

All you have is post-facto criticism and he does it in the moment. He called two plays that were schematic TDs (Diggs and Evans) You could almost lump in the Lenzy TD as well because it had him very open.

and it didn't happen on the calls brother. And, the airmail passes you speak of is a QB that hadn't played in 4 months???

I think Tommy only called 2 poor plays - the running play with Tyree right before the half that got blown up and the pick 6 near the end zone. The game winning TD pass was an absolutely brilliant call. Winning a bowl game with a QB that has accuracy and turnover issues isn't an easy task, and he got it done.

It's odd that some are in one state-of-mind in this thread but in another, it's 'Fire Rees' or 'Get rid of Buchner' but in this one they are defended or hated.

Both pick 6’s as well as the 3rd INT continue the trend os his career making poor decisions. He also showed poor accuracy again tonight on some wasy wide open throws. This has been the story of his entire career this far. It is not “by chance” that somebody throws as many pick 6’s and INT’s relative to his total pass attempts.
He’s tough and gutsy for sure, but has not shown anything to make me believe will be a good enough QB to take the team where it needs to go. I am rooting for him 100% and hope like hell he proves me wrong and makes the jump, but to date he is what he is…inaccurate with way too many really bad decisions.

Rees called more than 2... but I get your point. The second half Rees called a good game.
