Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard announced Tuesday that he will be leaving the program after the conclusion of the 2022 season.

Prized free agent on the market. He spent ten years in the NFL as a player but his entire coaching career has been at Wisconsin.

Would an NFL OC really make the move to CFB for the same position? Even if it is the SEC SEC SEC!!!

Unless we think he's getting pushed off the Rams?

Looks like Rams fans want him out anyways.

He was offered the Packers DC job a couple years ago. Might be offered it again after this season.

Wondering how stable that situation is walking into 2023.

He's going to have suitors.

He'd have suitors if he got fired with the staff after '23 too. Don't forget this is a Sconny guy.
Yeah, he's from Wisconsin, but things up there in GB are kind of tumultuous at the moment. He likely wants to be able to circle back and get the UW job one day whenever Fickell's time is done. The choices he makes now are critical.

You have Carolina and Indianapolis with interim coaches currently. NFL Black Monday in January 9th. He can click back and chill, as surely there are going to be people coming to him.

It just seems like the NFL is the logic next move and there are more jobs than just Green Bay he's going to be able to choose from. I am still stuck on that story that they brought an LB recruit from Chicago up there for a visit and the kid didn't speak to anyone the entire time he was there. Leaves some questions about Leonhard and being in a college job other than Wisconsin.

Yup, I'm with you; he's kinda like the Defensive version of Tommy: probably a better fit for the NFL long-term since he's not a grinder on the recruiting trail. Would he love to be the HC at Sconny? Sure, but he has time (and Fickell will have a long leash). Then again, maybe Leonhard realizes if he's not a dawg on the trail that his best fit is in the League. If that's the case then why not go and coach Green Bay? Shoot if his unit performs well but LaFleur gets canned next year, maybe he could even be retained.

Has Feldman posted his Purdue HC search article yet and named Rees as a possibility? I’ll put it as 30% chance he’s thrown in there.

I see your Rees and raise you Dan Mullen. Looking forward to a Kevin Sumlin take, too.

I'll keep everyone posted. Nothing yet.

I am not betting on Fickell to fail anytime soon, I will give you that. Everyone assumed Leonhard was going to get that job permanently and I'm sure he wanted it, but if college football has become all about recruiting now. You have to recruit college kids, your own players and players all over the country enrolled with other programs. If you don't feel like doing that, The League might be your best bet.

This is Green Bay's worst season in quite a while, so I'm curious to see what might happen come January. 15th in total offense, 18th in total defense, Rodgers not having a great year by his standards at age 39. It's one possibility. Leonhard having played in the League for ten years surely gives him clout and connections outside of the Cheddar Wall.

Correct, he coached under Rex Ryan, so he has connections via that tree too. Also there's the Dave Aranda connection if he wants another college DC job under a familiar face

Chris Vannini did an article. No Rees, but Dan Mullen was in there.

They go from not helping Chryst at all to throwing the bag around? Crazy to me.

Wisconsin in one cycle is basically saying, well we don’t have to be stereotypical Wisconsin football. Will be interesting to follow. Watch it be a mess and Ferentz laughs his way back to the Big Ten title

Don't they just.. not have a recruiting department? What the hell is the lure to go there?

Also, the Drake Maye stuff now officially gets some sort of legs as he will now hold the power on UNCs next hire. Recall last year Wisconsin hired Engram with the long shot at Caleb Williams. Now they hire Longo. Seem to be trying to run a playbook of hire OC > get transfer QB. Didn’t work last year but I guess shoot your shot.

EDIT: Loy says Maye wasn’t a big fan of Longo. So the above could be 100% off, flip it completely the other direction then. Maybe Longo was looking around because he saw himself getting the boot from UNC to make sure Maye stays?

Since 1905? Who cares, they‘ve won a NC as recently as 1960. Bernie Bierman led them to multiple NCs in 40s. I realize that still pre-dates most folks on this board but ”most wins since 1905” doesn’t mean much considering he hasn’t raised a trophy.
