According to Loy, he was told he could compete for QB 1 in the spring but left

So Pyne believed Buchner should not even be allowed to compete??? If true then this is an all time bonehead decision

I just hate it for him that he isn't getting his degree. All that work to not come away with it when you have to be extremely close is brutal
Watch him go to Stanford and make the degree think moot. I debated whether or not there should have been italics used in this post. They're losing McKee, after all....

Sounds like he was told he wasn't guaranteed the #1 job and figures he can go elsewhere to get that promise.

Best of luck to him. It was a frustrating season, but he played his ass off. Hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

Literally 0 people questioned him on being a good person, so throwing that out as some overwhelming reason to placate him with a guaranteed starting job, as some seem to be, is dumb.

He did what he could, but he should not be the starting QB at a P5 program like ND.

Stating such is not ripping him.

If you want ND to compete for championships, then you want them to improve in every way possible as often as possible.

Thanks for your effort. Good luck. See ya.

If he’s getting his degree, no. If he isn’t, yes.
Same. Absolutely not surprised he’d transfer, but definitely shocked he’d pass on a ND degree when he has zero pro future.

Realistically, a kid from Fairfield County with his background is going to get the same job regardless of his diploma says ND, BC, UVA, Duke, Wake Forest, Northwestern etc... on it. He values playing more than the ND degree which I can't really fault him for.

Well, if Drew felt that he outperformed Tyler in fall camp this year but didn't get the job, how would he feel about his chances next year?
I’m guessing it’s partly this and partly non stop criticism he gets at ND. Maybe throw in some frustration that Buchner may play a lot in the bowl game.

Northwestern’s QB situation is dog turd. They got I think one younger guy who got some run but Pyne would certainly have a chance to beat him.

Is he going to be guaranteed QB1 at any of those schools though? Maybe Northwestern since Dale says their QB situation is dog turd. But...

Not surprised he's leaving, but doing it so abruptly, and leaving the team hanging for the bowl game like this, is a bit much. The portal windows are shorter now but they're not so short he couldn't have done this at the bowl postgame press conference.

I'm probably wrong, but seriously I have a hard time believing that there's even 50 other Division 1 teams that Pyne would even start for this year....he was babysat by a tremendous running game and the best TE in the country.

Maybe UConn? I, too, could be wrong, but will be very surprised if he lands a starting job on a P5 team.

Wtf? Just speaking as an outsider who's probably not used to kids coming/going so quickly, but nothing about this seems "healthy" from a program perspective.

It absolutely is nowadays. Despite him probably starting the bowl (although with reports Buchner is back, I bet they were going to split reps) Pyne was going to be #3 going into next year. Buchner beat him once and would again, and they aren't taking a transfer to be #3. #3 QBs leave, that's just modern college football.

So what happens when we bring in a grad transfer like Hudson Card and he wins the job, then Buchner decides to transfer. Our depth chart will be Card, Minchey, Angeli?

If that's the case, more QBs enter the portal even after spring. You can easily grab a G5 guy that has some degree of starting experience to compete for the backup role. Or you can go FCS.
