Let this be a lesson to Matt Campbell, go while your name is hot.

I'd I were an AD with an opening I'd look at Mike Elko. Good DC and did a nice job at Duke in one year.
Which probably factored into Fickell’s decision.

Potential Fickell replacements

Where can the Bearcats turn for Fickell’s replacement?

On staff, Mike Tressel, Gino Guidugli and veteran Kerry Coombs all are potentially natural fits for Cincinnati. Coombs is extremely experienced, has deep history with the program and has also coached at Ohio State and in the NFL, as well as being a beloved figure among prep coaches in the Cincinnati area.

Outside of the program, sources indicated to FootballScoop that Ohio State wide receivers coach Brian Hartline, a Canton, Ohio, native, could emerge as a top target for the Bearcats Hartline has deep ties in the state as a former Buckeyes’ standout and NFL player who’s star has rapidly ascended in the coaching ranks since Hartline retired from the NFL and joined the staff at his alma mater.

Additionally, former Cincy star Mike Mickens likewise has ascended in the coaching ranks after a brief NFL career. Mickens is currently the defensive backs coach for Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame.

And finally sources told FootballScoop to potentially watch for Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh.

Can't see going from DB coach to HC in one swoop, tho.

Nebraska is Miami with way shittier weather and women. Anything they were doing in college football, they've already done.

Hell, The U has a way better chance of making it back to close to back than Nebraska ever does. The Big Ten has been a miserable fit for them and they got rid of Solich way too fast all those years back. Sent them down a slippery slope they never recovered from.

I mean literally Nebraska just started doing steroids earlier than everyone else. That was their whole thing.

Don’t know why it’s hard to understand that sometimes schools lose football dominance for a variety of reasons, never to regain it. 🤷‍♂️
I’m not talking about dominance, just returning to be a perennial top program. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, ND was pretty much Nebraska between Holtz and Kelly.

I could see a few Big10 teams calling. Maybe even take over at UM when Hardballs bolts.

He will be on an NFL staff and then be the interim
HC when the original HC has been fired but then be overlooked when a permanent HC is hired.

This is a silly argument. Nebraska dominated CFB in the 90s and recruiting has only gotten more national since then.

When Nebraska was at their best, they recruited southern California and New Jersey hard and well. Those pipelines dried up for them, and it won't be easy for them to get back in again.

Fickell and Rhule coming to the Big Ten just in time for Lincoln Riley and Chip Kelly.

Sometimes it just takes a little luck and 1 or 2 players to restart a program. In 6 years if Riley is still at USC he will have Caleb Williams to recruit and build on even if his next 2 QBs are duds. Players that want to be the next Caleb Williams will go to USC because the narrative will be he was a product of Riley. Just the same reason why ND cannot get a QB because they haven't had THE guy for a very very long time. Success breeds success, Top talent breeds top talent. Lackluster talent breed NDs quarterback room.... what was I talking about again....??? Oh, Nebraska can be relevant depending on the success against teams Rhule should beat, and with a little luck on and off the field in recruiting and against teams like USC, UM or OSU they might start winning again. What really is a successful season at Nebraska in the next 5 years? If Rhule gives them even an 8 win season in year 2 they will want to sign him to an extension. If he gives them 9 wins they start talking about being relevant again.

I think it's reasonable because it indicates that in order to recruit well Nebraska needs to have a national profile, which they don't these days.

Just now realized ND's head coach was under a guy 2 years ago that just got hired at Wiscy. I guess Id feel better about that if Fickle actually went to some top-tier program. Wisconsin just hired Freeman's former boss... I just hope Freeman is allowed to be the head coach and pick his staff this and run his team in '23. I feel like I have to convince myself Freeman is the guy...

For Nebraska to win they need to clean up in California and Texas recruiting, because there isn't enough talent in the Great Plains. Obvious statement of course.

When all the superconference dust settles, I think the Big Ten has four pods and puts Nebraska in the West Coast pod. And I don't think they really complain because they know they need to make a name in California.

$1 says the western pod is Nebraska, Notre Dame, Stanford, UCLA, and USC.

I wouldn’t read too much into this.

A year ago Fickell could have had his pick of elite jobs, but stayed to coach Cincy in the playoffs. This year he’s ready to go but there probably wont be elite jobs open.

Either way, judge Freeman on Freeman, not on where his former boss took a new job.

Wasn’t the ND job Fickell’s until the players changed Swarbrick’s mind?

The theory, IIRC, was that it basically came down to Freeman Now vs. Fickell Later, and ND went with Freeman Now.

The players were consulted and clearly supported Freeman but I dunno that they “changed Swarbrick’s mind.” I thought Freeman was always Swarbrick’s preference but maybe he had to convince others in the administration?

Either way, Fickell not being available until January was clearly a strike against him for our job, and probably others too.

Boyd Epley was a pioneer in the weight room and they figured out from losing to Florida schools a few times that they needed faster kids. The weight room there was one of the first to be a tourist attraction.

Don’t forget the penal institutions.

Montgomery took Tulsa to bowl games and had a decent run. I always thought he was a respectable coach and would be a good OC somewhere else. I mean, it’s Tulsa And the AAC.
