What makes you think Hartline is interested in ND? I’m just curious why he would leave such a stable situation?

I'm not saying ND should pursue Hartline as OC (co-OC/Passing Game Coordinator paired with, say, a veteran former-OC, recently fired head coach looking for a short-term spring board to another HC gig maybe), but... Hartline taking a promotion to work with a close friend/former teammate? That hard to understand?

I just have a hard time with getting my brain around the people who want Rees out falling into the hiring a first time OC part of the venn diagram.

We could do something like Florida where there is both a coordinator and an associate/assistant head coach for each side of the ball. That could be appealing to Hartline if he wants to be a head coach. He can avoid worrying about being good at play design and play calling and instead worry about more of the things he would actually be doing as a head coach.

As tempting as Hartline's recruiting prowess is, that would not be the right move in my opinion. ND is recruiting just fine now. ND needs a guy that puts up points everywhere he goes and a guy that can evaluate, recruit, and develop quarterbacks. Whether it is one guy filling both of those or the need for two guys, I suppose that depends on the hire.

But as we have all discussed ad nauseum, there are lots of teams that make scoring look easy, without overcomplicated offensive schemes. Just get a dude with a proven track record and start scoring some freaking points.

I think we might be setting ourselves up for some serious disappointment for a couple reasons:

• The chances Tommy actually isn't OC next year are at best 50%?
• If Tommy isn't, I'd be surprised if we didn't see an internal hire of Gerard Parker and Deland McCollough as Co-OCs given each of their past experience/future goals and why they chose to join ND

If bullet 2 takes place, can only imagine the outrage that is going to take place. But if they get a homerun as QB coach, I don't hate it.

Why would anyone trust Hartline, a guy that has never been an OC? Haven't we learned enough this year from these never been a coach in that position before mistakes? I suppose if Longo and Riley turned us down, but I would go hard after those 2 first.

Keeping Rees would be Armageddon. Parker or McCullough would be the apocalypse.

I don’t think Freeman/Jack have the balls to get rid of Rees. So I would say it’s less than 15%.

The only way I see him leaving is if he goes somewhere else. And with his production you only hear the rams other than Kelly. And that’s probably less than 50%.

So the likely choice is in 3 years when Freeman didn’t make any changes and he is fired the whole staff is probably gone.

I agree with this. I think even 15% is high. Idk if I would put it at 5% he gets fired. Far more likely he leaves on his own.

I don't think there is any way Rees is fired barring a total collapse down the stretch. I could see a "mutual" parting though where Rees lands in the NFL as a QB coach or something like that.

I will admit, it would be insane if Garrett Riley were even available after this season. How does someone not make an undefeated TCU OC that puts up as many points per game and has done it from the minute he became an OC a head coach. He's likely up for a head job very soon.

He stuck last year I'd guess out of some loyalty to the program and players but at some point it's just better for to move on. I suspect all involved will agree this offseason is the time.

It’s a move he has to make for his own career trajectory. Makes total sense.

Makes me wonder if there’s an offensive version of Al Golden that we haven’t thought about yet.

Respectfully, I feel like we don't need the offensive version of Al Golden. I feel we need a non NFL, college OC. The opposite of Rees in terms of over thinking. Does Rees have a girlfriend? If not, he needs to leave South Bend. LA is a good spot for him, unless he prefers the cougars at the Linebacker.
