I obviously don’t know your roster as well as you do, but during my amateur scouting sessions over the summer I became a fan of Braden Lenzy. He’s fast as all get out, I just knew they’d take more than one deep shot to him. I also didn’t see many passes to the RBs out of the backfield and that seemed to be a large part of ND’s offense. I was afraid of Chris Tyree being matched up on a LB in the middle of the field. Seems like none of that happened.

The initial gameplan by ND was a great one and it was working. But it doesn’t appear there was a contingency plan.

Hard to defend?? WTF. Rees was Brian Kelly’s QB, Hire and Promoted to OC. I love how people will rip Brian Kelly all day long but won’t CVS about Tommy Rees being way in over his head.
idiot, i am saying u cant defend the performance. You are such a dope.

Rees had a way too conservative game plan and did nothing to offset the pressure OSU brought. No screens, no jet sweeps. Should have Tyree in the slot and ditched Salerno. Lenzy should have more targeting as well as Style and Merriweather.

I guess we found out Harry Hiestand doesn't walk on water as well.

I think for the next few seasons we will be about as good as where BK had us. Top 5 - Top 10.

They weren’t open, dude. Not sure what to tell you about that. Tell them to create some damn space like Tate and Floyd did. The players are on the way bud.

Air it out on Saturday night and we don’t only lose by 30, but we also ruin the young QB’s confidence…and that would kill this team.

We’re about to hit our stride…. This O will be humming come Clemson week. Let the young QB grow. The Irish are getting better every day, finally

i totally agree if we can fix some things on offense because this defense showed saturday against the best offense they'll face all season that they are going to be one hell of a nasty unit. the buckeyes don't go on that 97 yd drive in the 4th in my opinion if it wasn't for our defense being worn down at that time due to our offense not putting together hardly any long drives in the 3rd which kept our defense on the field too much in that qtr

Glad the season has started and the complaining about stupid stuff has ended.

GOOD

* The moment did not seem too big for TB or MF. They both showed well. I liked the fire we saw from MF on the sideline.
* Defense played really well for 3.5 quarters. That drive for tOSU's second touchdown was the back breaker but overall that was a well played game.
* Audric Estime is gonna be a beast.
* PK and Punter showed well overall.
* tOSU has been talked about as the team that can beat Bama this year. That is a team full of four and five star, top 150 players and ND went toe to toe with them. IMO that shouldn't be as overlooked as it is being on this thread. That's a great football team and they're going to dominate the rest of their season. ND has nothing to be ashamed of after that game.
* MF's post game remarks. The guy hates to lose and the things that need fixing he is going to make sure they get fixed.

BAD

* The ND fandom really is battered and bruised. Those that are the sky is falling crowd need to get therapy.
* Cam Hart is obviously hurt. He did not look like himself.
* Gotta give LAX credit. There were a lot us us, myself included, that thought Zeke Correll was gonna be fine as Center based on his play against 'Bama his freshman season. LAX wasn't sold and he was right. ZC looked overwhelmed. The IOL is gonna have to get better by Clemson or that game is gonna be a struggle.
* Lack of pressure on their QB. Surprised at how quiet Foskey was.
* Chris Fowler - ooof that was a poorly announced game. No mention of injuries to key ND players all night and just plain missed calls on several plays. It was bad.

CJ Stroud didn't have a big night, but he made several really key plays that were daggers to ND. His two third down scrambles that resulted in completions for first downs were the plays of the game.
Fans are being fans. It's always like this after an ND loss

I am curious after reading through this entire post. Here is the stuff I am curious about:

  • MF is not a head coach. While time will tell his story, in this game our boys didn't look out of place.
  • Tommy Rees is horrible. As a football coach myself I look to the play and watch how it was designed or what it was designed to do. Some of those plays looked very bad, but consider the personel group. Some of those plays were down right dirty.
  • Buchner is bad. The passing performance is not winning us a NC, but again the personel group is the problem here.
  • The game plan was terrible. The game plan almost won the game for ND.
  • WRs on the field with the exception of Mayer were maybe 4th string at OSU. The simple fact that Salerno was even on the field tells you all you need to know about this group.
  • Throw screens. Again the personel group is slow. You actually think ND would get one off for gains? Our WRs were in single coverage because OSUs secondary is light years better than them, they weren't concerned at all.
  • Estime is going to be a monster going forward and if we can find some receivers its going to be awesome watching this guy run.
  • Our OL is a work in progress, trust in HH.
  • Defense is good and is only going to get better. Cam Hart was victimized all night.
  • Everyone saying watch out for NC etc, OSU was the top ranked offense in CFB and we did all right.
This was always a freebie year. Don't stress at all, its going to be a great year, I don't want playoffs because ND is not ready for that yet. Everything is going to be fine.
I said when ND hired Freeman that it was a huge gamble, and I still believe that. Time will tell, and I hope and pray that I'm wrong

I didn't say "air it out" but Rees did nothing in terms of adjustments to OSU loading the Box. If we can't trust Buchner with doing some Screens and crossing routes to slot receivers then we are screwed. No way we get 9+ wins with Rees play calling like this.

We sadly will not look as good as most of our personnel are, if the pass receivers (other than Mayer) cannot get SOME early separation. We still stink at that. Also, Correll needs to get better in-action coordinated with the two guards. On one sack, he suddenly veered left into an already handled DLineman (by the LG) exposing the nose tackle directly in front of him, and asking WAY too much out of the surprised Lugg, who had to reach out his arm to try to slow the guy up. That play looked like it was on Lugg, but Correll abandoned the block directly in front of him without even a chip. We still have work to do especially on the interior, although Fisher gets confused on invert games wide too.

So my suggestions: bring back Elmer Layden from 1924 (he was clocked sub-4.3 way back then) or find some other WR miracle, and clean up the reaction to twists and slightly delayed blitzes --- the TEs and RB aren't helping enough on those either. (BRING BACK KYREN!!!)

BTW: We played dead even with those guys for three quarters --- maybe better given the incredibly lousy field position starting drives. That one long 4th quarter drive was all that separated us. AND on their home field, and with our first starter QB. There's a lot to feel good about here ------ except the WRs.

Relax. The days of old man football are in the past. Tommy and crew will be hanging 50 per game soon.

My problem with the play calling was that it was BK all over again. Yeah you keep the points down but you are basically just in it for the moral victory of keeping it close.

Everyone watching that game knew OSU was eventually going to score touchdowns. You can’t be content with 10 points.

Get the ball in Tyree, Styles, and Lenzy’s hands in space a few times. And not on a freaking sweep.

First play after the big styles play to start the game, OSU basically had 8 in the box with a 9th close enough to it. 1v1 with Lenzy on the outside and we ran it while being out numbered up front. Not asking to air it out but when you’re out numbered upfront lets not run right into it for the sake of running it. That should be the minimum to ask. And that happened a bunch of times.

The OSU dline looks Bama level elite on paper so maybe the oline is okay and just needs to come out and dominate Marshall.
JTT was ranked the #4 player nationally in his class (regardless of position.) Jack Sawyer was ranked the #5 player nationally (regardless of position) Mike Hall was ranked the #50 player nationally (regardless of position) those 3 guys were on the DL. They are all young but uber-talented.

That is Knowles's scheme. They show you one thing and actually play something different. What you see presnap is almost NEVER what the D is actually doing.

I saw one play in the second half where their defense walked down both safeties and blitzed a corner "Ten in the box."

Multiple plays where pre snap they were playing cover 1 and post snap it was more linebacker disguises not a ton of disguising in the back end. At the snap a lot we had 1 on 1 on the outside where no safety had chance to over and help. They were daring Buchner to beat them deep. But we didn’t take the shots

This is what bothered me most.. Our D showed early they were here to play.

We had shots that could have been taken & they just weren’t.. but other times the blitz just wasn’t picked up

The two unsuccessful pays that could have changed the game for ND last night were the last pass play of the first half - when Lenzy inexplicably stopped his route - and the first play of the second half - TB got hit as he threw his deep ball to Styles. If TB connects on either of those they are six.

Despite the objections of Fowler and Herbstreit, I liked the decision to go for it at the end of the half. And that play was their shot. But yeah Lenzy (I’m guessing) messed up the route. I dunno what you do with that.
