Listen. I think there's a lot to like about this team and be optimistic about.

The D was very good and held an incredible offense down. If anyone gave their offensive output to you before the game, you'd have likely bet the mortgage on an ND win.

Offensively for ND, a new QB and a shaky first showing for the Oline stymied us. Most of that was baked in the cake though and they were being wildly cautious with TB, right or wrong.

We weren't embarrassed. It was a solid showing in a loss and im not claiming a moral victory.

Just look at Oregon, whose team and situation nearly mirrors our own in many ways, that didn't happen to us.

I think we're good here.

Not used too Boog rationalizing.

Our day will come. I’ll buy Boog lunch when it does

I am curious after reading through this entire post. Here is the stuff I am curious about:

  • MF is not a head coach. While time will tell his story, in this game our boys didn't look out of place.
  • Tommy Rees is horrible. As a football coach myself I look to the play and watch how it was designed or what it was designed to do. Some of those plays looked very bad, but consider the personel group. Some of those plays were down right dirty.
  • Buchner is bad. The passing performance is not winning us a NC, but again the personel group is the problem here.
  • The game plan was terrible. The game plan almost won the game for ND.
  • WRs on the field with the exception of Mayer were maybe 4th string at OSU. The simple fact that Salerno was even on the field tells you all you need to know about this group.
  • Throw screens. Again the personel group is slow. You actually think ND would get one off for gains? Our WRs were in single coverage because OSUs secondary is light years better than them, they weren't concerned at all.
  • Estime is going to be a monster going forward and if we can find some receivers its going to be awesome watching this guy run.
  • Our OL is a work in progress, trust in HH.
  • Defense is good and is only going to get better. Cam Hart was victimized all night.
  • Everyone saying watch out for NC etc, OSU was the top ranked offense in CFB and we did all right.
This was always a freebie year. Don't stress at all, its going to be a great year, I don't want playoffs because ND is not ready for that yet. Everything is going to be fine.

That’s a lot of “stuff” when you could have just noted that our WRs suck. 😉

MF had this group ready to play more than Kelly ever would have.
People on here with much more knowledge of coaching have said this wasn't really the best option. We shall see. I agree with a lot of the other points.

3 receptions to wide receivers last night. And we wonder why receivers and playmaker don't want to come here.
It's a real problem. We had multiple dual 1,000 yard receivers when Weis was here. Kelly was supposed to be an offensive genius, he never pulled it off. Closest he came was one year with Floyd and Eifert, one of which being a holdover from Weis. Most years we struggle just to have one 1,000 yard receiver...and when that happens I'm convinced it's only because we have little other talent to throw to. Fortunately it feels like that's changing under Freeman, but it may be another year or two before we feel the effects.

Our WRs were in single coverage because OSU bet on getting in the face of our QB making his first start and him not having time to take deep shots. I really can’t wait until next week. This has been brutal.

Just an FYI, that was the point I was curious about. I believe he'll be just fine.

I’m a fan of that ND defense. Still a little surprised Foskey was as quiet as he was.
I think your QB was very very good and Foskey didn’t have a lot of time to get home. Also we subbed him out a fair bit. Not sure whether because we thought it was a running down, or just to keep everyone fresh. But Ademilola was in instead of Foskey a bunch of times.

Can’t recall to be honest. The whole broadcast was garbage. They spent 5 minutes talking about HH’s return and had the camera focused on Balis. At one point, HH walked in the frame and they still didn’t correct it.
Lol. I'm forever synching these Prime Time games with our radio announcers. Can't do it anymore

Then proceeded to talk about Golden, but were showing another coach (can't remember which)and they finally corrected lol

On the salerno catch they first (clearly hoping) said it was intercepted. On the first stroud through to the endzone that the ground jarred the ball loose from Harrison they had already made the touchdown call.

It was an embarrassing performance from them all around.

And not to pivot to another topic but that first touchdown throw Stroud made was money. Put it in the perfect spot where only his guy could make a play on it. If its less than a foot more inside its probably a pick 6.

Haven’t re watched yet so still first impressions

Buchner did not flinch
Oline play was terrible and not just the interior
Cam Hart started slow
Clarence Lewis bounced back after a really tough bowl game
Thought we could control both lines of scrimmage better, but they got yards on the ground and we got almost no pressure on Stroud, Our Oline recruiting is so much better than that product
Felt like Tommy did a BK attempt to manage the game, but that usually doesn’t work against a better opponent in their stadium (in fact, that is what they did to us). Buchner gave no reason in the first half not to continue to challenge him to make plays downfield. TB played well enough to earn some play calls that could have tried to win the game. Certainly after 3 or 4 consecutive punts you have to either let him play or expect this outcome.
Really a baptism by fire, was really hoping we could catch lightning in a bottle, but it is a process. MF had them ready to play, we were not grossly outmatched, we should win a lot of ball games this year if HH can figure out what is going on with the Oline.

Stroud was doing a good job getting the ball out quick. There were some plays when he had more time in the pocket, and I didn't see what Foskey was doing. Your OL played very well though.

I think your post was confusing as to what thoughts were yours and which thoughts you were referencing.

The OSU dline looks Bama level elite on paper so maybe the oline is okay and just needs to come out and dominate Marshall.

And our quarterback was just phenomenal right?? ;)

At some point in the season you have to believe that a WR or 2 will step up.

You've been quite critical of our WR group after 1 game, I am giving Buchner a pass, and I think a WR or 2 will step up.

Exactly there’s no reason why Merriweather shouldn’t have got on the field or some targets if he was tearing up our defense in practice which people said he looked good then why didn’t he see the field? It’s inexcusable for Styles to get less than 10 targets a game and they need to play every WR

To be fair, we only threw the ball 18 times. I like Styles too but that'd be some 2011 Michael Floyd type shit.

Glad the season has started and the complaining about stupid stuff has ended.

GOOD

* The moment did not seem too big for TB or MF. They both showed well. I liked the fire we saw from MF on the sideline.
* Defense played really well for 3.5 quarters. That drive for tOSU's second touchdown was the back breaker but overall that was a well played game.
* Audric Estime is gonna be a beast.
* PK and Punter showed well overall.
* tOSU has been talked about as the team that can beat Bama this year. That is a team full of four and five star, top 150 players and ND went toe to toe with them. IMO that shouldn't be as overlooked as it is being on this thread. That's a great football team and they're going to dominate the rest of their season. ND has nothing to be ashamed of after that game.
* MF's post game remarks. The guy hates to lose and the things that need fixing he is going to make sure they get fixed.

BAD

* The ND fandom really is battered and bruised. Those that are the sky is falling crowd need to get therapy.
* Cam Hart is obviously hurt. He did not look like himself.
* Gotta give LAX credit. There were a lot us us, myself included, that thought Zeke Correll was gonna be fine as Center based on his play against 'Bama his freshman season. LAX wasn't sold and he was right. ZC looked overwhelmed. The IOL is gonna have to get better by Clemson or that game is gonna be a struggle.
* Lack of pressure on their QB. Surprised at how quiet Foskey was.
* Chris Fowler - ooof that was a poorly announced game. No mention of injuries to key ND players all night and just plain missed calls on several plays. It was bad.

CJ Stroud didn't have a big night, but he made several really key plays that were daggers to ND. His two third down scrambles that resulted in completions for first downs were the plays of the game.
