5 is the big one for me. They were crowding the line and we never really attacked the middle. It was there, we just never went after it.
They dropped those guys back at the snap more often than not. Well disguised defense. Gotta give Knowles credit he's got schemes that are hard to read.

1. Everything else considered, we were one bad gamble on defense away from being in position to somehow win that game. I thought Al Golden did a really good job most of the night and I’m glad they were willing to play freshman on a big stage instead of just doing what we did in the Fiesta Bowl and let guys get roasted for an entire half when they’re gassed.

2. The OL is a joke and unless they get it fixed this is an 8-4 team.

3. Buchner has no ability right now to be a pocket passer and is wildly inaccurate. He is a slower Wimbush with better touch on his passes. If we can’t be a run first team then we will struggle to score on anyone.

4. WRs got little to no separation all night. Styles was way slower than I thought. OSU has gotten light years better on defense from last year.

5. We’ll know what kind of team we have by week 3 or 4 when we see how ND has been able to execute against mediocre competition. Right now it looks like we have a talented and well-coached defense but a train wreck of an offense worse than anything we’ve seen since like the Charley Molnar era.

That had the talent they just needed a coach and scheme to put it together.

Better than everyone expected but not a top 10 team.
Based on what? You’re saying you’ve seen enough football half way through week 1 to know that while ND may not be better than OSU, Bama or UGA that they are also nowhere near the other unnamed seven teams that comprise the top 10? If so, you need to share your picks going forward b/c u should be able to kill it in Vegas.

Yeah #2 is the damned story IMO.

Did the entire D line miss the bus?
They got owned

Rees is just a poor designer and play caller

Not mentioned yet from what I can tell, but Brandon Joseph is the real effing deal. Guy flies all over the field. Also loved that he chewed out the player that came to close to the punted bouncing ball. That’s leadership.
Agreed other than his calling a fair catch on every punt despite having plenty of room to work with. Now he may have been told to fair catch so that’s not on him if that’s the case but why put him in there over Salerno if you’re not going to let him actually return the ball? Field position killed any chance Buchner & the offense had tonight.

I think OSU’a front 7 is vastly improved but still the lack of a run game was surprising. If you look at the star power along the line, the potential jump was probably not considered enough. Elite recruits everywhere.

Buchner isnt there yet in the short to intermediate passing game. You come to appreciate Book / Coan after watching a team struggle to string together passes. Glad we have Marshall next.

11-1 is within reach and a playoff berth I think more of this team now then before the game.

Confession:

When Mayer inexplicably fumbled, but miraculously recovered a perfect bounce, I was CERTAIN we were going to win.

That is EXACTLY the kind of play we are used to seeing. A potential game changing big play turned disaster.

Really thought the angels of heaven came down and tapped MF on the shoulder seeing that.

Heck, I’m still convinced the cosmic forces in the universe favor MF, and with BK’s bad aura gone, good things await.

If MF’s legacy is not getting blown out in a BCS type bowl, and not getting de-pantsed by one of the football factories in a prime time tilt, it’s still a more entertaining ride than the previous one.

(Yes, my bar has become so low,
enjoying a premier game for 60 minutes is the only expectation.)

Don’t 2 and 4 directly impact your third point though? We’re expecting Buchner to be amazing on the road in his first start against the #2 team when those two things are impacting his play. He wasn’t perfect but if you told me going in he was 10-18 with zero turnovers I’d taken that in a heart beat.

It’s like we never made any adjustments on offensive, even could guess the plays before the play.

The offense is embarrassing for a program that fancies itself taking on the big boys. We were Iowa bad.
We won't win a major bowl this year but it's been about 30 years so what's another year?

* TERRIBLE game from Rees. In a road game against one of the best offenses in the country, you cannot go ultra conservative for 4 quarters. Late in the first half, running on first down, THEN taking a shot on second? Gave OSU another chance late in the half. Unacceptable. Three straight runs on 1st and 25, down in the fourth? Are you kidding me? Running plays to the edge with Tyree on the short side of the field?

* Buchner was okay, I thought, considering the circumstances. Very inconsistent and the inexperience was obvious at times.

* Estime is obviously RB1. Looked like he was in on 90% of the snaps.

* This WR corps sucks. Not a single receiver with more than one reception. What happened to Styles after that opening play? Elite teams do not have guys like Matt Salerno playing significant snaps at this position.

* OL. Woof.

* The defense played a great game honestly. One huge blunder on that second OSU TD but otherwise a solid game called by Al Golden.

* Tariq Bracy stood out to me in particular. Thought he played a very nice game.

* Saw a lot more Benjamin Morrison than I expected.

* Grupe with a nice FG right down the center. Jon Sot started rough but he had a very nice game after the first couple punts. And we consistently were getting kickoffs into the endzone! Not bad!

* Our return game is absolute dogshit. Fielding a kickoff at like the 5 and failing to even get back to our own 15 on multiple occasions. Fair catching punts deep in ND territory with 10 yards of open space ahead.

* Field position was AWFUL all game. Forcing our mediocre offense and young QB to go 90 yards every drive will not win many games.

Agreed but it’s not often that it happens in year one much less in game one. I’ll be curious to see how they progress the rest of the year. It’s still too early to fire coaches & cut players.

Any perceived advantage we thought we had in trenches was non existent. They beat us by 11 without their best skill player. They also had a million stupid penalties it should have been worse.

I think Knowles going against us twice in a row ended up being a pretty decent plus for OSU.

- Everyone from Rees to Alt, Bauman, Thomas etc and in between needs to be better on the offensive side.

- DTs, LBs played great for 3Q. Need more from the DEs.

- Freeman doesn’t want moral victories, but Golden and the entire secondary deserve to take a moral victory.

Dale: I love you and I know you’re a serious poster but who gives a fuck about moral victories? Is Reese any better with Kelly gone? I don’t believe so!

You have Matt Salerno on the field and makes the dumbest mistake I’ve seen if Brian Kelly was still around he would be absolutely excoriated for doing this!

We are still no better than when Brian Kelly was coaching us

It was a pleasant surprise to hear Benjamin Morrison’s name a few times, and not for getting beat.

And poor Jaden Mickey… Golden owes that freshman some preferential treatment at practice for a week or something. Left him on an island at a crucial time. Great that they feel they can trust the young guys! But maybe don’t *actually* leave them on an island against Ohio State on a key 3rd and goal, when OSU is gonna kick a field goal even if you get home for a sack.

How was Nebraska able to just maul those great defensive fronts in the nineties? No passing threat at all and would just shred teams.

That's the best play we have seen from the back end of the defense in a while.

I'm sure I'm going to be labeled a Buchner homer after tonight, but if you'd asked me before the game, I'd have guessed he'd have a turnover or two. So many here are so ready to jock every new 4-5 star recruit we get, but even quicker to give up on them.

ND plays 3 shit defenses in a row before BYU. If we can’t score 35-40+ against each, we aren’t winning 10 games this year. Really need to hope to see improvement from Buchner as a pocket passer next week.
