1. Too conservative on offense. Then the one drive they decided to get aggressive, they should have pounded Estime instead based on field position.

2. Great game plan defensively, but failed to adjust mid-drive when Ohio State broke their backs with the run.

3. Golden got aggressive at exactly the wrong time, too. Need the staff to get some cohesion going… but that was a tough environment to expect it to happen.

4. FB dive for a touchdown. Tommy gets a pass for the lack of attacking the seam for that alone.

5. Attack the seam more if you’re going to insist on letting teams crowd the box. Throw over their heads, punish the run blitz. Safeties filtering down should be money for Mayer and/or a slot receiver.

6. Go 11-1 and get a rematch.

No offense and the blueprint to stopping us was shown. Blitz our dicks off and play man. Very disappointing performance by the o line

As always for ND, either the D is good, or the O. Rarely both in the same season. Ugh, but it could have been worse. I have a hard time being too upset with a new staff, new QB, and having to open the season against Ohio State on the road. It is frustrating to not be able to score after being up. Whatever, if they lose to Marshall at home next week, then I'll change my tone.

In my mind, the game came down to two plays: the Salerno PI and the terrible 3rd and 11 call.

Al Golden is amazing. He also had the worst play call I’ve ever seen tonight. Both these can be true.

Tommy. Oof. The offense is gonna be fine, and maybe OSU is really good on defense, but have some creativity man and give us a shot. The same slow developing plays with Estime ain’t it. We have the speed- use it. Estime is very good but just have him run it down their throats.

The fade to Salerno has to go. I’m not saying Merriweather makes the play that was a PI, but I bet it becomes much closer. Idk if that’s Buchner’s first read or what, but fix that.

Give the defense an A+ with the exception of DJ Brown and Ramon Henderson who were bad. It’s a tall task today and I think they’ll be fine. 21 points should absolutely have won the game.

I just don’t even have words for the offensive line. There’s no way Patterson being out made them this bad as a unit.

Sick of moral victories. They better kill Marshall by 50+

If ND pulls this off, there is a 100% chance I will cry tears of joy.

But it's more likely that Buchner shits the bed and OSU stomps ND 31-3.

This is just a bad match-up for ND. I *want* to tell myself that Buchner and option football will be a great equalizer. But let's be real OSU is going to put seven in the box and make Buchner win the game...in a night game in Ohio Stadium. ND does not have a WR corp that can get separation, and are we really expecting Buchner to be able to go through his reads like a seasoned pro? I think Rees could have a great game plan but OSU adjusts and the ND offense grinds to a hault.
Pretty much went as I expected. Rees did a lot of since things but I'm sorry, until the passing game against athletic defense you will continue to see defenses move safeties up, play man coverage, take away inside running and make the QB make plays. This is not sustainable against a talented defense.

5 is the big one for me. They were crowding the line and we never really attacked the middle. It was there, we just never went after it.

There are no moral victories. It stings. It sucks. With that said:

Punter was awesome. Dude flipped the field 3 times.

Defense was pitching a shutout (basically) until they ran out of gas around the 8 minute mark of the 4th.

Offensive line needs serious work.

Buchner needs serious work.

Gameplan was amazing. To anyone arguing it was too conservative, I disagree. It put them in the best position to stay in the game and possibly win it. MF and TR know what they have, and know what they were up against, and planned/adjusted accordingly.

This game is 42-17, and Sunday is a pundit “ND sucks” free for all if TR goes crazy.

The coaches laid the blueprint (Al Golden called a great one) for how to beat OSU, we just didn’t have the horses on offense to make it happen.

Saban is licking his chops, and diverting his attention solely on Georgia now. OSU is light years behind those two teams if their end of season product looks anything like the one they showed tonight.

Going to bed with a full heart, and the team and coaches should too. It’s a long season.

So Patterson was out? Man did we need him. No screen passes. I think Buchner needs to play under center a bit more. OLine was generally awful. Thank goodness Harry is back to fix that……
Hard to bag on the D although the Dline was supposed to be a strength and looked like a bunch of girls in 4th quarter. Looked out of shape and tired. I though we had some depth on the Dline. Having Bauer Bertrand and Kiser out there at the same time sets a low bar for the athleticism of our LBs. Time to bring in some of the speedier new LBs. Marshall out up 55 today. Sure hope our team can do better than this.

Oh yeah Tommy is a better QB than OC. That means he sucks. Better days ahead I hope.

At least we beat that embarrassing spread. We were never in jeopardy of losing to it.

We showed them!!!!

Why can't we get an Appalachian St? North Carolina got a warm up and almost lost

Because we think it's 1988 and have a bring it on attitude with everybody.

Guess what, we get Bama to pound our rears in a few years.
Yes, I'm aware that rhymes.

1) Feels like we lost this game over the last 4 years more than tonight. We need the horses and I think Freeman can get them.

2) Fair or not, Tommy needs to start to produce. His unit has been the weakest part of the team for his entire tenure as OC. I'm sick and tired of watching the defense play their butts off in games like these and inevitably fold in the 4th when they haven't been supported all night.

3) Hard not to get down in the dumps when we've all seen this movie before. It gets old knowing exactly what's going to happen mid-way through the 3rd quarter. That being said, the fact that this felt like a BK sort of loss in Freeman's first game is a great sign. We've all generally been in agreement that if Freeman is able to show that he'll be 80% of the gameday coach Kelly was, we've probably upgraded due to recruiting. I saw nothing to indicate that Freeman is going to be totally lost in what was a really difficult situation for a first time HC.

I feel cautiously optimistic about the future, but until we turn the corner and win a game against a fully armed top-3 team like this, it's still all hypothetical. I'm really really ready for that moment.

1. Everything else considered, we were one bad gamble on defense away from being in position to somehow win that game. I thought Al Golden did a really good job most of the night and I’m glad they were willing to play freshman on a big stage instead of just doing what we did in the Fiesta Bowl and let guys get roasted for an entire half when they’re gassed.

2. The OL is a joke and unless they get it fixed this is an 8-4 team.

3. Buchner has no ability right now to be a pocket passer and is wildly inaccurate. He is a slower Wimbush with better touch on his passes. If we can’t be a run first team then we will struggle to score on anyone.

4. WRs got little to no separation all night. Styles was way slower than I thought. OSU has gotten light years better on defense from last year.

5. We’ll know what kind of team we have by week 3 or 4 when we see how ND has been able to execute against mediocre competition. Right now it looks like we have a talented and well-coached defense but a train wreck of an offense worse than anything we’ve seen since like the Charley Molnar era.

I picked the irish to lose a close one and that's what happened.

-Golden made a bad call at the wrong time. That's really the only down fall to the defense. The young guys played pretty well.
-Foskey was kept well in check.
-Special teams screwed the offense. Putting them in terrible starting positon. Joseph fair caught he ball 3 time with 8-10 yards of open space in front of him.
-All we heard after the bowl game was the defense this and the defense that. But another game Tommy made no adjustemnts. His play call for the most part was terrible. Not even one screen to try to slow the d line down. The shuttle pass worked on time and he tired to use it 3 more times. He was and average QB here and and he is less of a OC. And his recruting sucks.
-Estime when given the chance ran hard and gave a ton of effort.
-Freeman did bring some youghness to this team Kelly would never of. I bet if kelly is the coach we get blown out.
-I do have concerns that TB is our starting QB. Again that's on Kelly and Rees.
-Had a few clock management problems.

We didn't get blown out like the world though we would and thats because of Freeman and Golden.
