There's nothing wrong in talking about being around for more than a cup of coffee when interviewing someone. If they have aspirations of moving on in a short period of time, it may make them rethink things before accepting the job which would save everyone some grief in the long run. For all we know Golden may be content to be a DC since he has already checked off the HC on his bucket list. Decent pay check without all of the HC headaches.

Grief or who, though? Jack Swarbrick gets paid a lot of money, and he's paying Marcus Freeman a lot of money to be head coach. When assistant coaching jobs open up, they fill them. It's a huge part of college athletics at the Division I level, FBS and FCS.

I don’t think Elko - Lea - Freeman - XYZ in a 6 year span is a normal part of the business. Elko and Freeman were two very good hires and Lea was a stroke of luck with the way Elko left. The odds you can bank on replicating that is extremely low. If Lea was not as good as he was, it falls apart and probably don’t even get Freeman either (see LSU). I don’t know many other Playoff caliber programs having that type of turnover on the defensive side of the ball.

Yeah I don't think you can bank on three straight home-run hires at DC.

But also, you don't want to have to teach (or recruit for) a new scheme every year. The players need continuity if they're going to properly develop, and Notre Dame is a program that relies on development. So that's going to limit the pool of candidates you draw from, or risk having to re-teach or a bunch of guys who don't fit what the new DC is looking for.

Elko to Lea was pretty smooth because they basically ran the same D. But then Freeman came in with his system and it took a half a season for guys to get up to speed (even though it is relatively simple). Then in replacing himself Freeman has passed on a couple of guys (Derek Mason) at least in part because they ran different systems and why ask your team to learn a whole 'nother scheme?

So I get why - when weighing two good candidates - you might go with the guy you think will stick a little longer.

We should have some type of penalty system to administer whenever someone mentions his name.

The penalty is you must post a BVG .gif

I'll never forget that Mick Assaf Twitter Space after BK left. Players were talking about how uncomfortable and awkward the BK exit speech was, and Gummy was like, "Still not as awkward as the day they announced my dad getting fired and I had to sit through that." Nervous laughter from everyone afterwards. Pretty spot on.

You don't need to bank on home run DCs when your head coach designs the defense and is making suggestions on the head set throughout the game. Pete Golding isn't a home run D coordinator but he coaches defense for Nick Saban. Dan Lanning actually might be home run D coordinator but we won't know till he coaches without Kirby Smart.

The bowl game is a bad example because Marcus Freeman had a lot going on because he just became head coach. He had to go see every single offensive recruit in that first week, admitted he really didn't get to dive in and study OK State like he would have liked. He's not going to have as much time for defense as he did when he was DC but he'll have more time than he did for the Fiesta Bowl.

So the DC hire was much more important for BK than it is for Marcus Freeman .

The OC hire will be much more important for Marcus Freeman when Tommy decides to move on or Marcus Freeman decides it's time for Tommy to move on.

The faces of the guys behind him are hilarious until I remember what those games felt like to watch...

Any step above BVG in 2014/2015... I believe ND could have been a serious contender for the NC... the Irish had the Offense/Coaching/Players... also had the personnel on D except DC/BVG... BVG allowed WAY too many points and didn't run the correct D accordingly. Just my $.02

Agreed. 2015 was absolutely loaded. We were missing a MIKE linebacker because of bad recruiting and played atrocious defense because of BVG. Should’ve gone at least 11-1 and it was the most “championship caliber” offense that ND had in the Kelly era.

Don't start my Friday by having to relive that in my head :(

Coaches come and go all the time. How much money you make and the fact that coaches leave all the time doesn't eliminate the grief of finding the next guy. I would venture to say JS and MF[SUP]2[/SUP] would prefer long term continuity over having to hire a coach 1 or 2 years after hiring the dude.

I didn't realize any of them had interviewed in person so that is new to me.

Wow Al Golden unrecognizable in that pic. Put that man in a damn tie!

Interesting to see no Belk, but Ash, on the DC list. Definitely sounds like they want guys who want to be here for awhile, over a hot one-year rental.

It isn't something they can predict or control. I get the idea but at the end of the day, I'd want the guy who is the best guy that I feel puts me closer to a championship. If that means he stays 1-2 years or 3-5, whatever.

We're all talking about Golden, Belk, Rossi. So it's clearly going to be Lukabu.

Anyone know anything about him because I do not.

Coaching Career
2020-present: Boston College (Defensive Coordinator)
2019: Cincinnati Bengals (Linebackers)
2018: Mississippi State (Linebackers)
2016-17: San Francisco 49ers (Defensive Quality Control)
2015: Florida International (Defensive Line)
2014: Colgate (Outside Linebackers)
2012-13: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Defensive Assistant)
2010-11: Rutgers (Outside Linebackers)
2008-09: Rhode Island (Outside Linebackers)

As a linebacker at Colgate, he was a finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year in I-AA. Nationally.

He's from Congo. 40 years of age.

Get excited: HE HAS COACHED LINEBACKERS!

Saw he has three stints in the NFL as an assistant, one with Tampa, another with San Francisco and most recently LB coach with the Bengals in 2019. So at 40 he has five years of coaching on his resume at the highest level. He's actually bounced around quite a bit as a young assistant prior to the last two years as DC at Boston College.

Intriguing guy.

who from the group has officially interviewed?

Doesn't say if any of them have been officially interviewed. It does say that Golden has been unable to interview in person yet due to the NFL season. He doesn't mention the others or gives them the same caveat. This could mean that the others listed have come in for in-person interviews. Could mean nothing of the sort and is just pure speculation.

Pretty much everything said here on IE is the information that Sampson gave (outside of not mentioning Belk). This is usually the case. Since everyone shares information from different sites, usually the info will be out there enough that someone here will post it.

Another interesting point from the article is the mention that Stucki garnered major points over Shepherd in his interview when they asked him his plans in 5 years and he responded with "I want to be the receivers coach at ND because that means we are being successful." Probably means that they really do value people who plan on being around a while.
